Has this website sold its soul for 30 pieces of silver?

I think Monsieur Grant has been open and honest with his replies on the other thread detailing the "link" between the Club and this website. I struggle to make a jump from working constructively with the Club over photos, crest etc and being under the Club's control, or being deemed as their mouthpiece.

Certainly, when you consider Steve's contributions on some issues (on here and elsewhere) and the existence of quite a few voices that have been criticial of certain decisions made by the Club, then I'm not sure how people have come tho that conclusion.

(For the record I mentioned this place being allowed to use the crest when the Ex Saints weren't, but my argument was that there should be nothing stopping both places using it - "FWIW, I think this site should be allowed to use it, along with a number of other institutions (with the Club's agreed permission). It must be possible for the Club to extend its goodwill and the let the logo be used by a number of initiatives after having a chat with them and being sensible about it."

I'm going to defend the mods here

I had over 5,000 posts on SaintsForever under a different username. Needless to say, it was considerably more edgy and funny than this site

Unfortunately, those days are gone

In the early days of internet forums, you could get away with near the knuckle humour and threads that get modified to the point of utter boredom now

It's not the fault of Baj or Steve, it's just that potential lawsuits didn't exist with regards to internet forums 7-12 years ago

IMO NC has done some great things for this club and also some of the things he has done have been very petty. HOwever as a business man myself i appreciate people in that position are not there to be liked but to do what they feel is best for the company. However no one can deny that this forum has "links" to the club and therefore freedom of speech is frowned upon, unless it is pro SFC.

what utter crap

I am really getting board of the politics surrounding our club at the moment ! It should be about football not people wanting to feel important ! I'm pro Cortese and will be all the time we're on the up ! Stop moaning don't like it jog on !

The owners/mods are 'damned if they do, damned if they don't !

They put in the time and effort to produce a forum for presumably like-minded Saints fans !

The use of the forum is entirely the individual's own choice and surely if you don't like it then you don't have to visit it ?

The fact that you can start a thread criticising the TSW management shows that censorship is not prevalent and that the implied influence of SFC is nothing more than a conpiracy theory !

I fully inderstand that (given the PC and compensation culture which exists today!) the owners are careful to avoid any threat of legal problems and I feel that forum users should respect this as most undoubtedly do !!!

This place was bland long before I was made a mod - and there are many posts/threads that i've left running that would have been shut by the previous ones. Deppo could have probably been banned 5 times over from what i've seen, but his posts can actually be quite funny. It's the people who report the "trolling" posts that make this place bland. They need to learn the difference between banter and just trying to be annoying.

As saint clark charmingly suggested, before locking my thread

We've already got a thread about the f*cking stupid notion that this forum is run by SFC. Either post this in there or PM Baj/Steve directly asking for your apology.

about a different topic:

A few may remember a thread started by me, which resulted in an infraction and a banning. To be honest, with my record of carefully checking my facts and never being one to libel anyone, the ban p! $$ed me off.

I have searched through the site and cannot find reference to the article below, published in the Daily Mail, on the 1st February, 2011:

Former Southampton crowd favourite Francis Benali claims to be taking legal action against the club's executive chairman Nicola Cortese over alleged unpaid bills.

Cortese was living in a house Southampton rented from Benali's property company.

The former defender said: 'We had to get contract cleaners in and there was also unpaid rent. It's a legal matter now.'

Read more:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/art...#ixzz1EOxXXZog

On the 26th September, 2010 I posted this on this website, which was hastily removed and for which I was banned for three months:

Frannie Benali is suing Cortese for £50K for damage to his house and outstanding rent while Cortese was living there.

I would appreciate an apology and a statement that this website has not sacrificed freedom of speech on the altar of Cortese's personal ambitions. I would have thought that this site's administrators would have learnt from Keith Legge and his doomed love affair with Wilde...

...I won't be holding my breath, though and I await the junta's removal of this post and suppression of any future negative posts against the Cortese regime...

(
I guess Clarkie answered my question, although I would have appreciated a less abusive response to a paying customer and fellow Saints fan
)

A couple of separate points here, that as usual seem to get mixed up into one confused discussion.

1 - The forum is 'in the club's pocket'. - Well, as um pahars has said, given some of Steve Grant's comments on certain subjects, it clearly is not. He has been harsher than most on some issues, as is his right, along with plenty of others, and all those posts are still here for all to see. If people could rise above their conspiracy theories and just debate the issues at hand with respect for different views, that would help a lot, but it seems the focus is usually accusing others of being pro-NC or anti-NC, to try and turn things into a black and white argument, rather than debate each issue on its own merits.

2 - Censorship - Like it or loathe it, Huntingdon and eurosaint above are correct and owners of any site have to be a lot more careful about content nowadays. People used to think I was harsh sometimes on my Marching In forum back in the day, but compared to now, I was lenient. But things change. It stinks, but that's life nowadays.

3 - The 'standard' of posts and members - This old chestnut will always come around. Simple fact is that far more people use the internet nowadays than in the early days of message boards, and so there are more people diluting the mix. You can't control that, and if one forum becomes popular and more people join, then even less so. I actually agree with some of what Turkish says, but there's no point complaining about it because there's nothing you can do except to have your own forum and invite only people you want on. The only way to 'improve' things (in your opinion) is to only reply to those threads you deem are worthwhile and ignore those that aren't... unfortunately, it seems the majority of posters prefer to reply and cause problems on threads they don't agree with or where they think people need to be told that what they've posted is rubbish... it just makes it all worse and fills to forum with crap.

We're all different, we all prefer different things on our forums and message boards, but on a popular one such as this, you can't cater for niche markets. You either respect that and your fellow members and contribute accordingly, or you don't. That's not the owners/mods fault, that's just the way it is.

For what it's worth it's a tough job to run something like this and I'm glad they bother. I don't know if SFC gave any involvement, I'd be amazed if they did, but the important thing is having a forum at all. Credit to this who've kept it going in it's various forms. It'll always be erratic for quality, some ideas work better than others. The orevios banter forums were far better than the long list of stuff we have now, but I guess that's not what the place is made for anyway.

It is very difficult. I set up a board a few years back called "Classic saints". It was awful and failed miserably.

GM, I apologise if you took my post as an attempt to insult you - I just find the idea that we are being told what to allow by the club completely laughable.

And having checked back, the point about Benali wasn't the only potentially libellous part of the thread you were banned for starting.

I am certain Steve Grant is not anywhere near the pocket of NC or anyone else at the club and I find he always tells it pretty straight.

I also think Guided Missile has a point on his original posting.

There are many on this forum who regard criticism of the club as akin to being being a traitor, they stick their fingers in their ears and hurl abuse at the messenger. That is the single biggest fault of this forum in my opinion. A forum can only be as good as the members that contribute to it.

Everything in the original post was true and from an impeccable source. It is a shame that this site did not take the opportunity to address a serious rift between ex-players and the chairman, five months before Charlie Sale broke the story in the national press. Still, we are getting away from the subject of this thread and into a different topic, which formed the point of the thread that you locked. Pity that topic can't be debated now due to the perpetual heavy handedness of the moderating on this forum. Talk about stifling debate and if I hadn't contributed anything, I wouldn't complain, but I think a fiver is enough the claim the right of free speech.

Jeez, in the rest of the country, it comes at no cost....

Agreed, and although I said something similar above, I think it's worth highlighting again. And to be fair, it's not just this forum, it happens in a lot of places.

We all do good things and bad. We all get some things right and some wrong. Being able to take criticism and discuss it like adults is the only way to improve yourself. I am sure that the club and NC in particular would welcome constructive criticism. Sadly, there are often criticisms of the club which are OTT and not constructive at all, but there are also perfectly valid points made which are worthy of discussion and consideration but some people just accuse posters of blindly wanting to criticise.

Now if there is no requirement for a moderator to act in a way that is "inoffensive" and be a standard for others to aspire to then please accept my apologies. Nothing personal.

I think you understand it just fine UP... I liken the role to that of any customer service position... sometimes decisions have to be made that people won't like, but the key is in HOW that is then communicated, and that should always be done in an inoffensive and polite way that seeks to help the poster understand why the decision was taken.

Steve, that's exactly why I started a new thread. Unfortunately the thread was locked and the opportunity to discuss an issue (that of the relationship betweeen some ex-players and the chairman)has been lost. I has nothing to do with libel law and to suggest such is ridiculous. The original post was true and it's removal was an opportunity lost.

Another thing that helps a forum be a funny and interesting place is when the people with the most posts (say, 10,000 and above) occasionally post something which is interesting and funny, rather than just moaning all the time. It's also useful when the same people don't destroy any attempts at lightening the forum by reporting posts every other minute.

Start a new thread and post it up again and let's go down the road of whether it was right to be pulled (with the benefit of hindsight, further information coming to light etc) as it has got nothing to do with this thread which is important in its own right.

ok...so benali and NC are having a dispute about something completely NOTHING to do with football/first team/promotion

so bloody what..?

That's a totally valid opinion to hold and espouse, no problem with that whatsoever.

However, it's just as valid to be interested in this issue, as many so obviously are for whatever reason (noseiness, juvenile curiosity, both are still entwined with this club, what it says about the moral compass of those involved who both have an interest in our Club, much of what keeps a forum going is not related to current on the pitch issues etc etc etc).

And of course if you're not interested, then just steer clear of those threads/posts. Personally, I'm just not comfortable with others telling me what I can or cannot talk about (within realms of decency, legal issues etc).

Good post. It amazes me how worked up people get over pretty trivial things. Another good post by Vectis as well. Like he says, no one outside the few hundred regular posters on here really give a **** what happens off the pitch. Who really cares what goes on if the club is secure and the teams doing alright? What ever happened to just going to the game, having a few stella's and making a bit of a racket?

As far as this forum goes, it's ok. Once, that is, you have trawled through the mountains of speculation and bull**** that is posted on here! Who cares if the club is 'linked' to the forum? I see plenty (too much imho) anti Cortese posts on here, so the club obviousley cant be that bothered with the drivel that is written on here.

I must say that I read the forum most days and can only remember one occasion thinking that the club may have complained about threads on here. That was when leftback was posting information and opinions. He must have either worked/recently worked for the club with current information available to him. After the Huddersfield match when the system to be used and the team picked was posted on here we were outmanoeuvered, especially as the Huddersfield scout sat next to us and what he was writing was observed by the person looking over his shoulder. I thought at the time that we could catch a cold and we did. Leftback was then banned. It didn't surprise me in the least certainly as the club monitored this site on a daily basis which was confirmed to me by David Luker. If I had been them I would have been upset at this information being leaked, therefore it would surprise me if there wasn't some reaction from the club.

Whilst I agree with some of the sentiments of the original post about the forums previous incarnations I have to wonder where will this ever end? Who is the next Lowe, Wilde, Crouch or Cortese? There are always a section of fans that disagree with the board and see conspiracy theories in everything that those that run the club do. I agree with Delldays it would be nice if we could enjoy the football as I can’t remember too many periods in my Saints supporting life where we win many more games than we lose.

In essence does it matter who is in charge, at the end of the day I don't think anyone who does the job will ever be universally liked. As long as the appoint the right manager and let him get on with his job then they have my baking. On this score I do not think they can currently be faulted.

Interesting to read the views expressed here. When I joined as a Mod I as quite surprised how little Steve and Baj contributed to what was right and what was wrong, a basic technical introduction but basically we were told to do what we thought was right.

Consequently a lot of the modding that gets done is based on my view as a forum user, reports and pm's from other users and hopefully common sense.

FF post was utterly correct on one point, the forum quality is an exact reflection of the quality and standards of it's posters.

Not sure I'd want to go to the pub with Dune: I'd be buying a round and then he'd only get me a half when he was buying.. [You have to visit the Lounge to understand that.:-)]

To be honest if I were to go on like some on here I'd be getting comments like "time of the month, dear?" and other such rubbish. This is one of my links back to the UK but there is an awful lot of drama-queening on here which occasionally makes me smile and sometimes groan.

Why does this issue affects my experience on a matchday, or Rickie's fitness, or the chances I'll see some nice football and hopefully a win?

We support Southampton FOOTBALL Club. The football, then, should take up the vast majority of the posts on this forum because that is what we're (supposedly) interested in. Actually if you look at it there is far more coverage of the business operations and tit-for-tat rumours. What is the point?!

I said it once before and I'll say it again... every Saints fan should watch this- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJSDCcp6kE

When Laporta and his crew took over Barca, there were factions trying to oust them out as they were changing the culture of the club, turning it into a professional outfit rather than something to be exploited.

So basically what your saying is that you should be able to say whatever you want about someone/something even if what your saying is not true or massively exaggerated?

And this is known as banter?

I always thought banter was light hearted and just a bit of fun? No real seriousness to it? I don't know if it is just me but you guys seem to be pretty serious in what you post, i don't see the humour? To me this just seems like another excuse to create another thread to throw stones at people.

You wonder why the forum is going downhill or isn't as fun anymore it is because there are too many threads like this one. Most people are happy with how saints are right now. Especially when compared to what we have had to go through in recent years. We finally have a good team who play good football, we have a good manager who wants to succeed, we have no fear of having to sell players especially the youngsters to keep the club running, we got our best player to sign a new contract, we have a great youth set up, new training development about to bebuilt, went to wembley and won a cup, and have a chairman who is a successful business man running the club the way it should be run. Times are good!

Point being what are we supposed to be jumping up and down in rage about? The photos? The legends? Nick Illingsworth? When those things happened we said our little pieces back then, should we be talking about them every day?

People are tired of the politics. Cortese makes mistakes, you make mistakes, i make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes. The difference is the level of the mistakes are nowhere near as bad as your little group trys to make out. People seriously don't care.

Every thread on this forum seems to go the same way. You and your boys go into them and pretty much spout the same rubbish. Look at the recent posts by you guys, anyone who just came back from holiday would think the club was in turmoil based on what you say!

You and your group are more to blame for the demise of this forum then the mods. If it is so horrible go somewhere else.

Let it go dude, join in with everyone else and be happy with what we got for once. What's happened down the road should be a warning to what happens when you get someone in charge who only cares about money.
