notnowcato Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 With the coming of age of Jack Wishere I think it is time to start building the England midfield around him. For me this means the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are no longer automatic picks. Both have been excellent for the England cause but now is the time for Fabio to grow some and have Wilshere as his first name on the sheet for the midfield. What I don't want to see is Jack being asked to play the defensive midfield role, he is far too good a ball player, finds space so easily and a great awareness for a forward pass. The DM role should be undertaken by a horrible little s**t in the mould of a Batty / Bowyer / Owen Hargreaves type. He has to be mobile, adept at breaking play down and retaining possession. Any ideas? Milner is probably the closest we have but he wont get the opportunity to play that role at City. Can't remember the young lads name at Chelsea coming through, anyone? My midfield would be Milner / A.N.Other in the holding role, with Jack ahead. Alongside Jack, Theo or Lennon on the right and Ashley Young on the left. Turkish Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 IMO we should forget about the Euros and build a side for the next world cup made up of young players and can have 3-4 years together to develop as a team without any pressure on them. It wont happen though as the FA will not want to risk qualification for Euros and the money attached to it, regardless of how poor we will be again with the same old over rated players. I also think 4-4-2 is a dated formation and we should look at 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-3-2. By the way Hargreaves is a totally different type of player to Batty and Bowyer and in his prime would have fitted the player you describe for a holding midfielder, people forget how good he was in the 2002 world cup. Both have been excellent for the England cause im sorry, when did this happen? I must have been in a coma. the latter has been alright for england but anybody name a decent gerrard performance for england in the last 5 years? but as for wilshere, yep, he is the future. lets hope him and rahim sterling, oxo, walcott and all the other young pups can show the "old guard" how its done in the next 3 or 4 years
notnowcato Posted 17 February, 2011 Author Share Posted 17 February, 2011 Agree that Hargreaves is a class apart from Batty and Bowyer, but you know what I mean, a busy little basket in there breaking play down. Found the Chelsea lad, Josh Mceachran, came on against Spartak when the game was won after 60mins. Only 18 or 19 but looks a very decent prospect. We definitely need a more fluent formation than 4-4-2.

Not necessarily my choice keith but when Lampard and Gerrard are fit they play. For the sake of English football this has to change, the sooner the better for me. latter day saint Posted 17 February, 2011 Share Posted 17 February, 2011 Can't remember the young lads name at Chelsea coming through, anyone? Josh McEachran? watched him in the u21 game last week that Oxo was involved in. looked very composed, time on the ball.wouldn't say he was a defensive midfielder, more like Lampard in his style. the holding/defensive midfielder was Fabrice Muamba who looked a real beast.was impressed by him as well. Crab Lungs Posted 19 February, 2011 Share Posted 19 February, 2011 For a long time (and people might not agree with me here but hey ho), I have been advocating that we do move with the times as use three of our most mobile, best passing and ball retention players in the country. My idea was to fuse three from Huddlestone, Wilshere, Carrick and Parker as a midfield three; It doesn't always have to be that specific trio but for games against the more technically gifted sides where we've come up short (France, Spain, Holland) then we could do a lot, lot worse. Barry just doesn't have the legs any more, Lampard faffs around too much and Gerrard for all his qualities is still too greedy. Sometimes, in football, you can get further without one or two of your most exceptionally gifted (but ultimately non-functional) players. So, there you have it. Get rid of most of the 'Golden Generation'... not only are they declining performance wise but they've had their chance. Let's try something new. So, squad for 2012? A little premature, yes but if I had to pick one right now... Goalkeepers: Hart, Foster, Stockdale. Defenders: Lescott, Dawson, Terry, Cahill, Jagielka, A Cole, Johnson. Midfielders: Parker, Milner, Gerrard, Huddlestone, Wilshere, Walcott, A Johnson, Lennon. Strikers: Rooney, Crouch, Defoe, Bent, Carroll. Reserve: Richards, Shawcross, Kelly, Warnock, Carrick, A Young, Albrighton, J Cole, Agbonlahor.

Saint_clark Posted 19 February, 2011 Share Posted 19 February, 2011 If only we had right footed Ashley Cole our defence would look very good tbh. Dawson and Terry in front of Hart, Cole on the left...Johnson is the only weak link. Personally I think Richards should be given more of a chance, he looked quality when he first came into the set up.
skintsaint Posted 19 February, 2011 Share Posted 19 February, 2011 surprised no one has mentioned Rodwell at Everton who looks like he could be a good holding midfielder.

Agree, however Moyes has him in and out the side on a regular basis.
skintsaint Posted 19 February, 2011 Share Posted 19 February, 2011 well with Arteta, Cahill and Felliani he has competition for places and the fact they are struggling a bit Moyes might want to use the experianced players a bit more.

True, my point was kind of he is starting to get to the point where he has to be pushing on now. Becoming a first team regular.
