Pancake Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 Come on Pancake - that was uncalled for. I wasn't there last night but from what I saw on the tele it looked to be a fantastic occasion and if the organisers wanted to give LM an award without him being privy then that is entirely up to them. The fact the "Doc" made the effort to turn up to present it speaks volumes. I know LM is not everyone's cup of tea but I do know whenever I open an Echo he is in there doing some sort of charity work. He was interviewed last night and gave credit to NC and Markus and re-emphasized his support for the club. Why there is this constant sniping I don't get. So this award was for his charity work, or his time with Saints? And who voted for it? Sorry, not having a go Duncan, I just chose to quote you as you actually wrote and reply.. Im confused as to who this award came from and what it was for. From what I can tell, the award came from the organisers of the event; who seem to be the group I've mentioned previous - no-one has corrected me as yet. TheGaffer is very close yet he wont answer the question. Im all up for people, LM included, getting awards from peers, fans etc for work they have done - but this just seems to be some sort of "old boys club" routine of honouring your own. dune Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 Who cares pancake. Lawrie deserves it and if Clotese wants us to pick between him and legends then i for one will stick by the legends.
sotonist Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 Even if Lawrie was involved in setting up the event, it's possible any of the other people involved could have set up the lifetime achievement award thing without his knowledge. In the absence of ted, he's certainly the most worthy of that accolade.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 Even if Lawrie was involved in setting up the event, it's possible any of the other people involved could have set up the lifetime achievement award thing without his knowledge. In the absence of ted, he's certainly the most worthy of that accolade. Spot on. Do people really think people like Sir Alex, Sir Ian Botham and the like would get involved and video a tribute if it was just an old boys club awarding themselves honours? I really do despair at some of our fan base, no other club appear to be like it. Would Sunderland turn on Bob Stokoe,Ipswich on Bobby Robson, Watford on Graham Taylor? Just read the list of names that his personilty brought to the club, do you really think anyone else could have signed Keegan, Shilton, Osgood, Ball ect. You could tell on Sunday that people who are Saints through and through like Mick, Le Tiss and Steve Moran completely respected the guy. Keegan was a world class footballer who ended up at Southampton, when other giants of the game were after him, why was that? It was down to one man and if some of our fan base cant appricate the man, then I feel sorry for them. I went Sunday with my 21 year old son and he spent the whole journey back to Poole asking me questions about Lawrie's time at the club, he just did not realise how great the bloke was. Had WGS signed David Beckham when he left Man Utd, signed Iker Casillas, Michael Ballack, and Paul Scholes. Qualified for Europe 5 times, won the cup and finished runners up to Man Utd then younger posters may just get what Lawrie did for old farts like me.And we did it with a swagger, we did it with great football and I haven't even mentioned the likes of Williams, Wright, Wallace, Holmes and Golac. bigdavewatson Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 My understanding of the evening is as follows. MO took the initiative to organise the two events as he is an entertainer and realised that the club were not really doing anything on this scale. He did a bloody good job on the dinner with the cabaret and inviting the likes of The Doc, Williams, Souness, Keegan, Holmes, Beattie, Le Tiss, Franny, Merrington, Chatterley and many of the 76 team. The atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed and you could talk to anyone and everyone. The award was a decision by his friends to honour the guy, which was met with universal agreement by everyone in the room (and most sane people on this board) Lawrie had absolutely no idea about the award and was embarrassed, yet extremely proud - actually the tribute was almost as much about his Wife, Ann, as it was LM ! I don't care who got paid what for the event, who organised the award (deserved in my humble opinion) it was a brilliant night that I will remember for many a year. sadoldgit Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 The word "Legend" is bandied about all too freely these days but the big fella is a Saints legend for what he achieved as a manager with us. Sounds like they had a great night and the award was well deserved.
rpb Posted 15 February, 2011 Share Posted 15 February, 2011 Laurie McM achieved miracles whilst Saints manager but it is noticeable that those who don't like him ignore his achievements whilst those who do forget that he also got us relegated. I know that he more than made up for that but it does seem like some are rewriting history to make a point.
