RedArmy Posted 14 February, 2011 Share Posted 14 February, 2011 I would say that reason is down to teams 'uping' thier game in the big stadium, as well as putting 10 men behind the ball. Nothing to do with 10-15 idiots at the back of block 42 that can't be heard on the pitch. The entire stadium is full of pessimists who have a negative influence on the team. Instead of trying to spur the team on when things aren't going well, we get on their backs. Pardew mentioned it last season IIRC, so it's definitely noticed. Saint Samuel Posted 14 February, 2011 Share Posted 14 February, 2011 I sit at in the back row of block 42, hope we're not all being tarred with the same brish brush here! Before Saturday's game I was expecting block 43 to get some "plastic fans" abuse, but wasn't expecting it too go on for the whole game, got very boring, would rather have directed chants at the opposition fans than our own. I have to agree that we can be too negative at times, I remember someone telling me a a while back that a survey found Southampton fans to be the most pessimistic of all 92 league clubs, thought that sounds about right. My Dad isn't a Saints fan, when I made him sit through a televised game a few years ago (think we lost 1-0 at home to Blackpool) the one thing he commented on was how he could hear the crowd get on the player's back whenever a pass was misplaced or a mistake was made. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud to be a Saints fan, we've been great in the past couple of weekends against United and Peterborough (wasn't at the Posh game, but we sounded good on TV and was told it was a cracking atmosphere there), I just wish we could be a bit more positive at times. The9 Posted 14 February, 2011 Share Posted 14 February, 2011 you can guarantee that within 5 mins of kick off, we would have had at least 1 anti pompey song......and then its just a repeat of the same 5-6 songs over and over......really fast Actually, as I discovered when recording chants over 2 matches in October to upload to FIFA11, we sing a LOT more songs than you'd think. 21 unique songs (rather than duplicates or different versions) which are Southampton Til I Die If You Really F'cking Hate Them Clap Your Hands Rickie Lambert Southampton's Goal Machine When I Was Just A Little Boy, I asked my mother... (Wash Your Mouth) Nigel Adkins' Red and White_Army By Far The Greatest Team Lee Barnard, Barnard (Clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap) The Saints Coooooome Onnnnnnn Youuuuuuuu Reds Jose Fonte Baby Adam Lallana (Clapclapclapclapclap) Adam Lallana Makes_Messi look sh*te We Love Southampton We Do Nah-nah-nah-nah F*ck Off Pompeys Going Down with no money in the bank Oh When The Saints (slow version into fast, fast version, clappy version) Red and White Barmy Army Sit Down Shut Up Southampton Boys Are In Town... we all follow Southampton Who Are Ya ? Who The F'cking Hell Are You ? In addition, notable absentees from those 2 matches: "We're the Northam" "If You all hate Pompey clap your hands" "Pompey Fan Upon A String" "The Pompey Family" "Adam Lallana la-la-la-la-laah" (Reuben Agboola song), "Deano Deano" "Super Kelvin Davis" "Woolston Ferry" http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?24213-Fifa-11&p=867123#post867123

The9 Posted 14 February, 2011 Share Posted 14 February, 2011 Just for the record for those who can't be bothered to count, it's 3 Pompey songs out of the 21 which were sung. There were another 3 that I could think of which weren't sung but occasionally get an outing. And also, since October we've added Cortese.... ohhhhh Nanananananananana Alex Chamberlain Chamberlain Walking in a Liebherr Wonderland and many many more... The9 Posted 14 February, 2011 Share Posted 14 February, 2011 why do the northam sing at 100 mph...(not literally, for the pedants) The people banging on the back panels of the stand ALWAYS bang them quickly because there's no need for a back panel accompaniment to a slow song and they feel they have to be involved. Its very difficult to maintain a slow tempo when someone else is trying to start a quicker one, just like it's impossible to focus on a song when someone's singing another one. I haven't heard a Kingsland North song that wasn't "We're the Kingsland" in ages, and even that one gets started in the Northam. And as for the "Northam only sings 5 or 6 songs all the time", I'm not sure I can give a better response than the one earlier in this thread listing all (21 of) the songs sung in the Northam during two successive games at the start of October - in fact I'm pretty sure from a Northam Song Statistics perspective it's a world-leading piece of research. simonsaints1 Posted 16 February, 2011 Share Posted 16 February, 2011 A simple solution for those who criticise the varietyand speed of Northam songs, is to open a new front (ie a singing mob)at the Chapel end-there's enough space there and it would certainly help spread the atmosphere around the ground. chi saint Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 The last thing we need is the politically correct police at a football match! Football matches are not rallies for the nannie state - they are havens for passion, opinion and humour and in your cases tolerance. I would suggest, if you are very easily offended then it's best to avoid football matches all together and go and find some people to 'report' in some high crime and violence inner city area where it might do some good to society. Alternatively you could try the family section of course ! Are you for real? Tolerance, really where is the tolerance when you use racist language you muppet. Seriously at school on Monday ask you special needs teacher what the relationship is between tolerance and racism!

dronskisaint Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 I understand the scenario around the original post but we'd be atmosphere-less without the Northam. I haven't got a season ticket this season...I live 250 miles away but am lucky enough to have a job that allows me to get to 50-60% home and away games and a friend who's good enough to get me tickets when my decision has to be made at short notice (a lot of times!). I always ask to be as near to or in the Northam as I can because, for me, the atmosphere, the singing, the abusing makes the experience. I love the away games for the same reason...the nucleus of the travelling supporters is usually the Northam and our away noise, songs and support is excellent - ask some of the opposition fans. I've, like Benji, sat/stood with some real tw*ts...some of whom are the 'spotty youth' sneeringly referred to but I'm equally sure that many who do sneer were the 'spotty youth' of their day. I wouldn't deny it for myself..apart from my Clearasil perfect complexion. I've got to say, though, that my worst days have been where I've had to get tickets in less passionate parts of the ground and had to endure the 'experts' and the godawful moaners that you can hear because the area is quieter...I've come closer to lumping some of the old tw*ts doing that than ever in the Northam...and I am that old variety of supporter with 50 years of watching. Probably it's one of the biggest disappointments about seating as opposed to the terraces - at Peterborough this season I could move down the terrace when I got irritated...seating rarely allows that sort of flexibility. mongs are part of football culture & one man's mong is another man's uber-fan but they ain't confined to the Northam! Barry the Badger Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 The bloke behind me yesterday was funny, I'm sure he would've annoyed some on here. He was one of those that literally shouts instruction to the players through the game "yes, pass it, look out wide, good ball Danny, now deliver, no don't shoot, oh no" etc etc. It was tyro league type shouting. The guys next to me were getting annoyed with him I think, but I am quite happy to put up with it. Ultimately the bloke was a passionate, enthusiastic, vocal fan, perhaps after a couple too many lagers but it just showed how much it mattered to him. I would rather stand shoulder to shoulder with him than somebody who sits on their hands all game every game.
