S-Clarke Posted 13 February, 2011 Posted 13 February, 2011 I think you're mental but your point about Adkins buys is one that isn't lost on me. It's early days but I would like to see some real delivery from his two new players to reassure me he's the right man to build our Championship team... Whatever you say about Pardew, his judgement in the market has been proven very very good. Adkins judgement has been proven to be very good too. He gave beckford his chance when he signed him on Loan, I believe he signed Billy Sharp from Rusden - then replaced him when he was sold for big bucks with Gary Hooper from Hereford (who then left to join Celtic) He then signed Hayes etc.... His judgement of strikers is outstanding, he's not really made too many signings as yet to be judged. You cannot tell me you're judging N'Guessan and Forte yet? I remember the slating Antonio got after his first few games......then in the summer he was the next Pele.

The thing that impressed me about Pardew was his ability to spot our weaknesses and then rectify them. I haven't yet seen Adkins do the same, but he hasn't really had the chance either, granted. As above, it's too early to judge his two signings at our club but I'd like to see Forte and the other lad with the bad scrabble hand name deliver for him for all our benefit. I'm not sure who was writing Antonio off or who thought he was Pele. But probably the numpties who roam around this place. I hope you're not including me among them...

We haven't got any major weaknesses right now like we did when Pardew started. For example, when we signed Fonte last season we instantly looked much, much better. We wouldn't have signed anyone this january who would have had the same level of impact.
Northant Saint Posted 14 February, 2011 Posted 14 February, 2011 Special mention to Danny Butterfield, he played brilliantly and i'm sure he was on the ball for most of the second half.
Liquidshokk Posted 14 February, 2011 Posted 14 February, 2011 Special mention to Danny Butterfield, he played brilliantly and i'm sure he was on the ball for most of the second half. He did have a bad first half hour though. Couple of awful mis-kicks that gave the ball away or nearly cost us. The fans groaned on numerous times when he was trying to defend. Admittedly good second half though and I am a fan of his.
dellboypete Posted 14 February, 2011 Posted 14 February, 2011 Just back from the game (ha ha! not really - but we were stuck on the M3 for about an hour and a half on the way back, before we managed to get off at Eastleigh). It was a dull game, but what did anyone else expect before hand. Carlisle had (and still have) the second best away defence in lge1 after Brighton. They came with the intention of closing everything down and filled midfield. I though they did a good job and it was reflected in the way saints played. OK we looked pretty jaded but Carlisle didn't give us any space to use and everytime O-C got the ball they tried to stop him by fair mean or foul and I dodn't think they could complain about their sending off. It was inevitable that one of them would go eventually. The disappointment for me was Chaplow, who I rate really highly. I put his performance down to just a having an off day. I thought we really missed schneiderlin's creativity - but I thought Lallana looked pretty good when he came on. He is still far from match fit as was shown after a couple of his fast bursts he was almost bent double out of wind. For me, any win is a good win at this time of the season and there are some tough games coming up. Rochdale's home form (pl 14 w6 d 6 l 2 f 24 a 17 ) is pretty impressive and we will do well to win there. They are unbeaten in their last 8 home (league) games.
Legod Third Coming Posted 14 February, 2011 Posted 14 February, 2011 Pardews team had weaknesses until the day he left, that's why it never looked like going up, Cobblers. It looked like going up when from October to the end of the season our form had us finishing second. I do think people have forgotten where we were when Pardew took over. As a brief reminder. NOFECKINGWHERE...

NOFECKINGWHERE... sorry but the season does not start in october.......you cant just cherry pick a date and say, yes, we would have gone up. we SHOULD have picked up more points in the first 10 games IMO give the 10 points back and we would have been 5th....not 2nd but 5th....pretty shyt really
sfc4prem Posted 14 February, 2011 Posted 14 February, 2011 Pardew lovers still out in force... Get the fck over it FFS, he's gone, we have Adkins, support him or shove off.

I do think people have forgotten where we were when Pardew took over. As a brief reminder. NOFECKINGWHERE... Let's not pull any punches : Saints 1-1 Millwall Davis, Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding, Lallana, Wotton, Schneiderlin (Thomson, 83), James (S. Gillett, 75), Saganowski, Paterson (Gobern, 70) Subs not used: A. Pulis, O. Lancashire, B. Bialkowski, L. Holmes And Murty and Harding were already new signings (as were, technically, Lloyd James and Bialkowski who'd inked new deals and had been out of contract). And we were on minus 10 points. But PULIS (zero appearances and currently failing at Barnet) and LANCASHIRE (bottom of League One) made the bench. If he hadn't signed Murty and Harding we'd have had James and Mills at full backs and Thomson or Gobern starting on the right. The last game of the previous season at Forest : K. Davis, L. James , J. Saeijs (O. Lancashire, 76), C. Perry, A. Surman, A. Lallana, M. Schneiderlin (O. Gobern, 80), S. Gillett, B. Wright-Phillips (R. Gasmi, 71), J. Euell, D. McGoldrick Subs not used: C. McNish, T. Forecast Those in bold had all left by the start of Pardew's tenure.

From the Yeovil home match that season onwards we looked at worst PlayOff material, but like this season, you can't go around handing out 10 point starts (especially when you're already on -10).

Whatever you say about Pardew, his judgement in the market has been proven very very good. In fairness, a lot of Pardew's buys weren't rocket science; we need a striker - lets get the top striker in the division. We need a couple of centre backs - out of contract former Premiership player, and raid a championship club that's desperate for cash. We need a centre midfielder - how about the captain of that team that just stuffed Norwich? Our weaknesses were so obvious last season that anyone should have been able to identify transfer targets. That said, I'd say that Harding was a cracking pick and Connolly looked a find (although Pardew already had a connection with him). What I'd definitely credit Pardew with, however, is the ability to (along with the money and the fact that we're a massive club in this division) persuade those players to come here (and possibly Lallana to stay).
