Goalie66 Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 At the last home game someone commented on my Old Scarf. Just plain red and white stripes in nice warm wool. When I was a kid supporting Saints I took pleasure in painting my saints Rattle (wooden one) and taking it to every game. Will anyone else admit to owning and using a rattle at games and does anyone still wear an old shirt or other item treasured from the past?
SouthportSaint Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Yes I used to set off to the Dell with my scarf and bobble hat (both knitted by my Mum) rosette (made by my Mum) and rattle (no idea where I got that from). If I didn't get there early and get down by the wall then I did not see much of the goal mouth action. Incidentally, the limited view problem was reversed as an adult. If you arrived late and ended up standing at the back of the terraces underneath the east or west stand your view was obscured so that you lost sight of the ball if it was kicked above head height. Happy days.

Happy days. I bought my 1963 cup run rattle at Toomer's.Holt and Haskell also sold them as did the sports shop down at the bottom of Below Bar. I think the old supporters club might have sold them as well.
miserableoldgit Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 I had a rattle, painted red and white ( which I think that I might still have up in the roof somewhere), that my grand-dad made for me. I used to take it to the Dell and to Bannister Court to watch the Saints speedway team. Great days
Miltonaggro Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Lol! It's like last of the summer wine on here!...

um pahars Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Roberto has brought them back into fashion wearing it for city, Indeed he has and I have recently dug out my mid 70's plain Red n White number (also have a matching Yellow n Blue one as well). Had a little look at the 1976 silk number I still have , but sadly it's really faded and I'm not sure those ones are back in fashion (yet).
ericofarabia Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Don't have either anymore - but it was the done thing to wear at least one scarf around your wrist - prob the 76 Cup winning silk effort- and the red and white barred chunky number round your neck tucked into the crombie. I walways was, and still am a class act!!
Gemmel Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 When I was a nipper, I travelled with some older guys to all the away games. Having been given the long and graphic history of the "Red and White Scarf" on how many grounds, victories emotions and countries it had witnessed, it would then be flown out of car window on the way to the game. Away trips can be tiring and this come sometimes cause forgetfullness............ So Mr Western I am sorry that I opened the window on the M1, i was just after some fresh air.

Give it time Um.... Give it time And I trust the silk scarfs were tied around your wrists (Not sure that reads the way it was meant)
Gingeletiss Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Bought a red woollen pompom hat when I was 17, now 57, and it features in my will . I wore it everywhere whilst in the Army (minus the pompom), and have several photos of me and hat, taken all over the world.
Lets B Avenue Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Still wear the Red & white woollen scarf made by an aunt in 1967. Its first game was Chelsea 2 Saints 6. Got given a wooden rattle which I was allowed to take to the Combination Cup Final in 69. One twirl. Hit stranger on head. He wanted to hit my Dad. Rattle never went again.
alehouseboys Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Tho never a big scarf wearer after the early years I did like/envy those old European Cup scarves the Mancs and Scallies wore 30 or 40 years ago - only let down by the Mancs and Scallies wearing them!
sussexsaint Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 (edited) I still have my home knit red and white scarf from 1970's that I used to detest in my yoof but as time has gone on I have become more and more attactched to, probably due to the fact I daren't wash it , and its quite sticky in places. As a little one I used to insist on wearing a the blue and yellow rosette from the cup final with the tin foil FA cup in the middle but that became dangerously bent during a match and now sits in an old cigar box. I suddenly feel very old Edited 9 February, 2011 by sussexsaint
Jimmy Gabriel's Halo Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Yep, still got my original wool red and white barred scarf bought in 1967 and still wear it. Being in the Scouts at the time I sewes on the old Southampton badge with the three roses on and it's still there. In the white sections I wrote the names of the players at the time and I can just about make out their names - Davies, Paine, Melia and Martin are still just about legible. It will be with me against Carlisle on Saturday in the Itchen South if anyone would like to pay homage to an old relic. The scarf, I mean...
Jimmy Gabriel's Halo Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 I also still have my old pin badge "The Dell Supporters Club" with the old bloke with a stick on it. That was bought from the old Dell club shop c.1967 and still works.

Ah remember that game well. Davies 4 and Chivers 2 but the best goal was scored by Osgood for them!!
Miltonaggro Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Zip it, Compo! Which must make you Nora Batty! As part of the 70s generation with Um, I still have one of the chequered silk numbers somewhere (at the time the height of playground chic) and an inherited knitted job with a Paul Bennett badge (now there was an enigma...). Never had a rattle, but as dementia takes hold I may have to turn to ebay...
70's Mike Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Had a very short Red woollen scarf, in the early 70's followed by a silk one with my crombie Also have to own up to having a Red and White painted rattle in 60's
Toadhall Saint Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Normal scarves in the 70's. Then (and now) nothing apart from on the odd occasion a pin badge.
Deppo Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 I always wear my red Stone Island jumper, which was knitted by my mum.
um pahars Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Give it time Um.... Give it time And I trust the silk scarfs were tied around your wrists (Not sure that reads the way it was meant) One on each wrist, the wolly one around the neck. I even bought a pair of fingerless wollen Red n White gloves from the Saints Shop at some point (circa 1978) LOL.

Christ, the amount of stuff I bought from matey on the corner of Milton road, mainly T shirts that shrunk with the first wash!

The9 Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 Roberto has brought them back into fashion wearing it for city, i personally like plain red and white scarfs, i have one. Actually I'd pin it on the "50th anniversary of Munich" Manchester derby in 2008, when supporters of both clubs were given the plain scarves to go with the plain commemorative shirts the teams were wearing. Later that season (or possibly 2008/9) northern rock gave away a huge number of plain black and white scarves to Newcastle United fans as well... ...and then there's the Man U "green and gold" protest. All long before Mancini pitched up at Man City, never mind wearing his scarf.
skinner Posted 9 February, 2011 Posted 9 February, 2011 My rattle was made in the woodwork periods at school
