I thought he was black at first but then I realised I thought Ken Monkou was him.

Strange. I think he'd had a haircut.

What did I expect... him to be better?! TBH, I can't remember much about how he played. Don't think he made all that many appearances.

Ok I'm going to bite.

I didn't say 'captains' aren't important as such, I just said it's completely irrelevant who is captain. Every team needs good leaders, players who talk to their team mates get everyone going, do all the things you mentioned are important of course they are, but it makes no difference if they have a stupid armband on or not.

Roy Keane was a great leader at Man United, but do you seriously think he would go into his shell or act any differently if he wasn't wearing the armband? Do you think players would stop listening to him if he didn't have the armband on? Of course not. Same goes for all the other great captains. You can be a 'Captain' without having the armband on you know. Do you think John Terry does anything differently now he's not wearing the England armband?

It's not just me who shares this view. Go to nearly any other country in the world and they will tell you the captaincy is irrelevant. It's just given to the player who's been at the club the longest usually (Or the oldest). So is everyone else in the world wrong? Gabriele Marcotti who is generally regarded as one of the sports top journalists shares the same view as me on this. I've spoken to players who told me it's completely irrelevant. LOTS of people think the same. Fair enough you think differently, but that doesn't mean people who disagree with you are idiots. You've got your opinion I've got mine. Just like you think David Prutton is great, when nearly everyone else in the world thinks he's rubbish. Doesn't mean you're an idiot for having that opinion.

You constantly moan when people have a pop at others on here for merely having a differing opinion, yet you get into personal attacks with people like me and Alpine for posting stuff you don't agree with. A bit hypercritical no? Just give it a rest please.

As for Higgy, go back and watch the games. I can remember most of the mistakes off the top of my head. How about the two in the Bolton game? Firstly where he failed to push up with the rest of the defence playing their attacker onside which lead to one of their goals. The second one in that game he hacked down Kevin Davies who was running AWAY from goal giving away a penalty. Totally needless. He failed to keep up with the rest of the defence again in the away game at Arsenal where we drew 2-2 (Pretty basic stuff). And who can forget the own goal against Middlesbrough in Redknapp's first game)

I will agree that Claus was ****ing dreadful that season though and a terrible leader for us. His performance at Fratton summed up his season really.

Pele was signed when Burley decided the best way to deal with a severe central defender shortage was to buy a load of central midfielders eg. Idiakez, Jason Euell etc. Hell we even had Euell playing in the centre of defence in a couple of games!

Pele was a mediocre CB, he definitely wasn't the worst defender we've ever had, Jakobsson, Lancashire and Davenport were worse but he was a decent CM. His problem was similar to a lot of players who played under Burley, they were regularly played out of position.

I vaguely remember a few games when we had 3 midfielders in the defence, namely Wright, Euell and Skacel.

God, he was bad. Painfully one-footed, easily forced inside onto his weak foot and lightweight enough to get muscled off the ball. His crosses weren't up to much either.

People saying he'd be a good option on the bench now seem to have forgotten who he is - Holmes (in his 10 games when fit of course) looked like a Prem player to Smith's League 2 level as far as our wide options went, and it's hardly like Holmes has escaped criticism since, he barely made the bench himself when fit earlier this season.

Oh he had a brief period in Greece after he left us and then on his return to France he's had all sorts of trouble.A big procedure for unpaid taxes and then a bit of a scrape with the law because he abandoned his family or something like that resulting in a costly divorce. He was unemployed but whether he still is I couldn't say.

Harsh, he didn't get 22 caps for no reason. I'd say he's as good as our current options at RB at least.

Sorry, did you see him cross the ball? His ball control was absolutely appalling. Our first leg of the play offs with Derby he was absolutely terrible! He crossed about 5 times and just kicked it over the top of their goal.

Marcelo Tejera, an Argentine who made his international debut in 1991.

His transfer was investigated by the authorities I believe I think he apparently signed for us but never turned up?

wasn't that episode during the time when we had ... 'appy 'arry ...(he of Spuds)...as our manager?

there was something about 100K to an agent that went missing and the player never showed up ..or something?

Ahh, right. It probably wasn't him I saw in town then. Maybe it was Stig Johansen?

Anyway Pele is the worlds best no 9 only burley would play him at CB or Midfield!

Surely this is so stupid it can only be an attempt to get pedants to bite ? Not the hilarious Pele confusion, but the fact that "that" Pele wore number 10. Always.

True. Davenport was sh*t, but he only played about five games for us, so it wasn't all about him by any means that season.

Five starts in the league plus two sub appearances, and four FA Cup starts with one sub appearance.

With hindsight this "weakened" side we put out against Man U in the Cup wasn't that much weaker than the first team :

Southampton

P. Smith, M. Cranie, C. Lundekvam (C. Davenport, 45), A. Jakobsson, D. Higginbotham, P. Telfer, M. Oakley, A. Svensson, O. Bernard (N. McCann, 62), H. Camara (K. Phillips, 80), P. Crouch

With Niemi and Mikael F'cking Nilsson on the bench unused.

He was always a defensive midfielder, not a centre back. He was alright when played in his normal position.

Absolutely right Colin.

Having seen more Swedish football than English in the last 25 years I can agree.

Jakobsson came to Saints (as an esatblished midfielder) at the tail end of his career and with an impressive international career behind him, and he had a nice touch and was good at initiating attacks, as was Anders Svensson (though much maligned at the time).

Why it is managers insist on forcing players to play in "unnatural roles" - and then make them conform to the "almighty formation" 424, 433, or whatever is beyond me. But while we're on the subject of misfits , Jo Tessem started as right back, moved to right midfield where he scored 4 goals in 9 starts, but incurred everyone's wrath when he was forced to play up front in place of the injured ...James Beattie...and it ruined him whereas his midfield scoring rate was as good as any midfielder we've had ..and his goals often got us points ..and even wins on several occasions.

Now at Skonto Riga, where he has managed to pick up a Latvian passport.

Actually, now playing in Uzbekistan as of the start of January.

http://sportacentrs.com/futbols/legionari/01022011-pereplotkins_parcelas_uz_uzbekistanu

He was at Skonto from 2004 until very recently, getting his Latvian passport in 2007 to enable him to play for Latvia (and change the spelling of his name to the more Latvian "Pereplotkins"). Also had a 6 month loan spell at Derby County in 2008/9 when he played 2 matches.

Presumably Latvian membership of the EU from 2004 meant that Perepl(y)otkin(s) didn't have any work permit problems that time around, though Ukraine still aren't part of it...

God, reading this thread brought back some horrible memories from 2004-9. With the exception of some of the football we played in 06/07 with the huge amount of money Burley spent plus Bale and Jones, that period has to be the darkest in our history.

That 04/05 squad in particular was a mess - Niemi was never really fit that campaign, Smith lost his confidence and Blayney had a shocker when called upon. Nilsson-Telfer minus his pace-Claus circa 2005-Jakobsson-Higgy "own goal" circa 2005-Bernard-Davenport and tiring Le Saux were our defensive options. Anyone surprised we went down? We might at least have outscored WBA, Palace and Norwich but Beattie's attitude was awful before we sold him to Everton and Phillips we now know was distracted by off the field issues. In fact, only Crouch (when we finally played him) and Camara looked a threat. In midfield, Oakley wasn't fully fit and Prutts was finally hitting form when played at last as the box-to-box midfielder which we bought him as in the first place (WGS admitted to this error in his book). He was MOTM v Liverpool but the Arsenal incident destroyed our midfield and his career. Then we had the various bits and pieces players drift in and out under a disinterested Harry Redknapp in 05/06 and the rest of the time was spent spiralling downwards from Burley's costly errors and the Dutch disaster.

It is only since Markus and Nicola came in that we've started to undo the damage of WGS going, the laziness creeping into the club and the reckless Sturrock/Wigley/Woodward gambles that were every bit as moronic as Wilde's financial gambles and put the club on the same path - administration and near extinction. Those who keep on having a pop at NC should read this post and bear it in mind next time they type. NC has done some things I don't agree with but he's 100,000 times better than Askham, Lowe, Wilde and the other idiots from that period put together.

Ali Dia? :)

Why do we always get spazzes posting Ali Dia in worst player threads?

He played all of 15 minutes and hit a post.

We're looking for players who played week in week out despite being utterly useless, cost a bloody fortune in wages and transfer fee and kept better players out of the team.

Neil McCann

Stuart Ripley

Mark Hughes

Uwe Rosler

Jakobsson

Olivier Bernard

Davenport

I remember seeing Sarmiento play for us at Torquay in the FA Cup. Thought he was pretty decent to be fair.

Reckon I've seen most of the players mentioned above, mostly due to the fact I lived one minute walk from the Dell so used to go and watch reserve games fairly often.
