david in sweden Posted 8 February, 2011 Share Posted 8 February, 2011 The Premiership days seem so long ago now, great save ! Anders Svensson did we really appreciate him? You are opening that old can of worms again, because there are people on this site who think he was rubbish! Well, my answer to that is ..he wasn't appreciated, mainly because Strachan played him out of his "normal " role. It's on record (from a Swedish TV interview) that WGS told Anders (and Fernandes) that they were both good players but his (WGS) formation didn't allow him to play them both together ! Anders (now 34 years old) is captain of the Swedish national side ..has passed 100 caps for his country... and still going strong. If the profile seems familiar, he was previously dubbed "the Swedish David Beckham" except that he didn't marry a pop singer, but after ditching his "model" girlfriend, eventually ended up marrying a local girl from his area, and became a father last Autumn. But all that aside, his natural playing role is "in the hole " behind the Swedish strikers, and his passing is second to none -in this part of the world anyway. His team Elfsborg are never quite good enough to win the Swedish Prem. title (Allsvenskan) are a bit more like Fulham rather than Chelsea, unfortunately their excellent defence doen't make up for their lack of goal power. My evaluation is that he is a good player, who was playing in the " wrong team" (due to Strachan's tactics), but in the brief period that Sturrock was in charge he was given more liberty to roam, and really showed up well. shurlock Posted 8 February, 2011 Share Posted 8 February, 2011 White wasn't a bad player - shame Lowe and Dutch duo threw him in at the deep end which made it difficult for him to settle and develop. While we had alot of youngsters who were dross, the whole brutal sink-or-swim experiment didn't help.
chocco boxo Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Always thought he was unfairly taken off after conceding penalty against Wolves. austsaint Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Well both these lads are going to enjoy living on the Whitsunday Coast - it is beautiful. If they display the talent showed in the UK for Saints I'd say they could be picked up by one of the three "A" Leagues clubs in Queensland - one of those clubs, Queensland Roar has gone 24 games without defeat. once_bitterne Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 or to be exact Pedro Monteiro. I always blamed his signing for the main reason we didn't get near the top 2 places during the Wilde/Burley 'error' when we were gambling the future of the club in a desperate hope to get back the Prem. With Claus and Killer injury prone we desperately needed a good, strong, solid and dependable CB who knew the CCC inside out. So what did Gormless George do? Went out and wasted the best part of a milion quid on a bloke who had never even set foot in the UK much less had any experience of English fotball and proved to be the worst CB I have ever seen in a Saints shirt. Jackobsen looked like Tony Adams in comparison to him. And don't even start with the 'but he was an ok midfield player'. That's like spending 20k on a second hand Rolls, finding out it doesn't start and then trying to console yourself by thinking at least it makes an adequete bottle opener. Anyway, I realise the fault was all Burley's and not Pedro's, but I still chuckled to find him on the PFA's homeless site. Apparently he is playing non-league footaball on a non-contract basis at the mo. I pray to god that it's not as a CB as he had all the physical presence of Nicholas Lyndhurst. http://www.givemefootball.com/transfer-details?player=20059&playerID=9685

Papa Shango Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Pele was pretty decent for us in midfield. I remember Leeds away 2006/07 where we won 3-0 and he ran the show. He wasn't that great in defence but he only played there a handful of times IIRC. Saying that he put in a great performance at the back at home the Derby in the league (0-1 defeat)

Lighthouse Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 I thought he was excellent in several games in midfield. Ran the show infact. Hull away when we won 4-2. There was a home game against Leicester when he scored (think that was the game that nearly got called off). He was also pretty good in the play second leg in midfield with Guthrie. Also he is not the worst CB we've ever had, not by a very long way. Darren Powell was worse, as were Jackobsson, Lancashire, Davenport and Lundekvam mk.05. Big_Bald_Si Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Lol - great thread. I just can't hate Pele, purely for the fact that between Christmas and New Year we beat Leicester 2-0 at home, and Pele scored from a cross from Jesus. How many football fans can say that?? shurlock Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Good player - enough for WBA to pay £1m (and they went on to get promotion). Think he -along with Viafara's head not being right- were one of the main reasons our midfield was so lightweight and crumbled the next season. JackFrost Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Pele was signed when Burley decided the best way to deal with a severe central defender shortage was to buy a load of central midfielders eg. Idiakez, Jason Euell etc. Hell we even had Euell playing in the centre of defence in a couple of games! Pele was a mediocre CB, he definitely wasn't the worst defender we've ever had, Jakobsson, Lancashire and Davenport were worse but he was a decent CM. His problem was similar to a lot of players who played under Burley, they were regularly played out of position.

JackFrost Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Slightly inspired by once_bitterne's thread, anyone remember this chap? A Tunisian CB who signed for us in '04, that we spent around £700k on and he didn't make a first team appearance for us. What's more I believe he was here in the time of Claus, Jakobsson and Davenport. Anyone remember anythign about him and why he never played for us? Surely he couldn't have been that bad he was behind those 3 in the pecking order He's now playing for Lens who are mid table in the French Ligue 1, the first tier of french football

Give it to Ron Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 I watched him a few times in the Ressies and never understood why he never got a game compared to some of the dross we played in his position. He was decent in the air and hardly lost a header, he was tough and agressive and exactly what was needed at that time an players like Carlton Cole wouldnt of bullied him. His distribution was probably why he never got a game as he was probably second only to Benali in touchline passes.
