Says he threw faxed bids straight in the bin I love Cortese. Apparently there will be a full length interview with the great man on the Telegraph website tomorrow morning
trousers Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/championship/8309832/Southampton-chairman-Nicola-Cortese-hits-out-at-Premier-League-clubs-over-Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-offers.html Not happy with the way some Premiership clubs acted re interest in Chamberlain. Says he threw faxed bids straight in the bin I love Cortese. What about the bid from Arsenal that was hand delivered by a bloke in a car...? ;-)
trousers Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 "Oxlade-Chamberlain is wanted by Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, but Cortese revealed that he refused to enter into negotiations for the 17 year-old winger" "We focused on what we wanted to do and not what others wanted to do. I was in the driver’s seat. There was not a second I doubted that he would stay.” True to his every word in the December BBC interview then. Nice.
Saint_clark Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 Brilliant. Looking forward to the interview, looks like he's keeping his word about speaking publicly more often. I also wonder what number it is that clubs ring when they want to make an offer - surely it's not just the front desk?
NickG Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 few on here under-estimated him on the Ox-C thread, slagging others off for being in denial when we believed Cortese
Saint_clark Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 few on here under-estimated him on the Ox-C thread, slagging others off for being in denial when we believed Cortese Indeed...and yet no-one has been able to give a good enough reason as to why we shouldn't trust him.
hypochondriac Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 Indeed...and yet no-one has been able to give a good enough reason as to why we shouldn't trust him. Said there would be a fans forum and no word of one as yet...
Saint J 77 Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 I wonder if he will come out and rubbish this takeover rumour in this interview? Or will he just ignore it as he said he will not respond to ever silly little rumour made?
St Chalet Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 "I was in the driver’s seat. There was not a second I doubted that he would stay." Love it.
S-Clarke Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 I wonder if he will come out and rubbish this takeover rumour in this interview? Or will he just ignore it as he said he will not respond to ever silly little rumour made? He's already rubbished any takeover stuff in the big interview he did with the BBC a few months ago. This will be ignored by Cortese because it is complete rubbish. He's definitely true to his word.
Saint_clark Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 Said there would be a fans forum and no word of one as yet... It was more along the lines of "we are looking to get one sorted", but even so that is still not a good enough reason.
hypochondriac Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 It was more along the lines of "we are looking to get one sorted", but even so that is still not a good enough reason. Thats not what the report from the season ticket dinner said.
Saint_clark Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 Thats not what the report from the season ticket dinner said. I can't be arsed to go searching for it, but i'm pretty sure he never said anything for definite.
hypochondriac Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 I can't be arsed to go searching for it, but i'm pretty sure he never said anything for definite. I can from SolentSport Twitter - 'just to update people asking - Saints say they will do the solent fans forum at st mary's in the new year. '
Papa Shango Posted 7 February, 2011 Author Posted 7 February, 2011 Thats not what the report from the season ticket dinner said. Oh, so you don't even know if he actually said there would be one. Just going by somebody's word on here? Must be 100% true then. Personally I couldn't care less if there's a fans forum or not.
hypochondriac Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 Oh, so you don't even know if he actually said there would be one. Just going by somebody's word on here? Must be 100% true then. Personally I couldn't care less if there's a fans forum or not. Going on what Solent (and people at the dinner) reported. Also lighten up. I was (mostly) joking.
trousers Posted 7 February, 2011 Posted 7 February, 2011 I can Solent Twitter: "Saints say..." Who is "Saints" in this context? Cortese? Jordan Sibley? Lady in reception who answered telephone? Etc ;-)
Saint J 77 Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 He's already rubbished any takeover stuff in the big interview he did with the BBC a few months ago. This will be ignored by Cortese because it is complete rubbish. He's definitely true to his word. Yes that's what I thought. Plus I've just seen the solent report saying officals at the club have rubbished the reports but will not be making a comment. I'm pleased cortese told wicked uncle Wenger where to go. It doesn't sound like a chairman looking to sell the club does it?
hypochondriac Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Solent Twitter: "Saints say..." Who is "Saints" in this context? Cortese? Jordan Sibley? Lady in reception who answered telephone? Etc ;-) Well as Cortese confirmed to the season ticket holders at the dinner, the fans forum was something which needed to be organised as soon as possible. I would imagine it unlikely that he did not agree with the solent message but maybe I am mistaken.
thesaint sfc Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Hyp, you're a dude. But seriously your posts over the last month or so have been very borderline Alpine_saint. Give us a break! I don't think there's a club in the country with a future as exciting/bright as ours IMO. Stop being a negative betch.
SuperMikey Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 I actually have a man-crush on Cortese. *Sigh*
Liquidshokk Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 I actually have a man-crush on Cortese. *Sigh* Phew, I'm not the only one ;-) I feel like one of only a few people who haven't ever had a bad word to say about him.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 (edited) Awesome interview from Cortese, not a man to be messed with! Reading that article I think Chamberlain will be with Saints until at least summer 2012 if Saints are promoted to the CHampionship this year, and will only leave if Saints aren't a Premier League team for the 2012/13 season. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/championship/8309832/Southampton-chairman-Nicola-Cortese-hits-out-at-Premier-League-clubs-over-Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-offers.html The Daily Echo is quick to publish versions of negative stories from other papers such as the Daily Mail. Will be interesting to see if the Daily Echo reports on this Daily Telegraph story, and if it does whether it puts a positive or negative slant on it. Edited 8 February, 2011 by Matthew Le God
SaintBobby Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Does anyone other than hypo care about the fans forum? Ive been to a couple and enjoyed them. But they are a bit of a self-indlugence for uber-fans, really.

"Saints too quick to dismiss bids from top clubs". Or; "Chamberlain furious that Cortese didn't even consider a bid from his dream club".
saintscottofthenortham Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Spot on. I would want anyone else in charge of our club. I have always liked him, even with a few of his decisions that I didn't agree with, you can see he is only doing it for the right reasons. Those who still hold a grudge are looking more and more silly as the weeks pass by.
Gingeletiss Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Phew, I'm not the only one ;-) I feel like one of only a few people who haven't ever had a bad word to say about him. A select club, but we are few in numbers!
Stepgar Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 The only thing I don't like about him is the spat with Le Tiss. Really need to get past this and move on.
NickG Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Said there would be a fans forum and no word of one as yet... was that the one postponed when Markus died?
NickG Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 I can is that the solent who said Chamberlain had been sold?
Gingeletiss Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 was that the one postponed when Markus died? Don't encourage him Nick
alpine_saint Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 How refereshing that we have such a straightforward and focused chairman.
aintforever Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 I said Cortese wouldn't be bullied by other clubs, good stuff.
georgeweahscousin Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 Straight in the bin? I bet it wasn't a recycling bin either, think of the rainforests! NC is a disgrace etc. etc........
Ricky Redstripe Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 What about the bid from Arsenal that was hand delivered by a bloke in a car...? ;-) He was dumped in the wheelie bin outside the Itchen Stand and his car was chucked in the Solent!
JustMike Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 The only thing I don't like about him is the spat with Le Tiss. Really need to get past this and move on. wouldnt be too sure that it's NC instigating this
OldNick Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 personally I would have sold Ox got good add ons and then bought Antonio from Reading. We know he can make a difference in games.
beancounter saint Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 personally I would have sold Ox got good add ons and then bought Antonio from Reading. We know he can make a difference in games. If the £10m packages quoted are correct then maybe this would have been a plan but the reality of the offers was probably a lot lower.
SuperMikey Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 personally I would have sold Ox got good add ons and then bought Antonio from Reading. We know he can make a difference in games. 1) Oxo is one of the highest rated youngsters in the country. 2) Antonio, while very good last season, has not been anywhere near as good for Reading. 3) Antonio is out of contract in June, therefore we can get him for free.
OldNick Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 If the £10m packages quoted are correct then maybe this would have been a plan but the reality of the offers was probably a lot lower. 3m with add ons would have done nicely. I dont believe Ox is equipped to change enough games for us to have the luxury of him.I know the majority will agree with me but that is how i see it without my rose coloured specs on. Antonio did have the know how and strength to do so.
Doctoroncall Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 1) Oxo is one of the highest rated youngsters in the country. 2) Antonio, while very good last season, has not been anywhere near as good for Reading. 3) Antonio is out of contract in June, therefore we can get him for free. Not quite, compo will be due and if he is offered another contract by Reading, that will also need to be taken into account on the compo reached.

The two lads we've signed recently are probably just as good.
OldNick Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 why would we want Antonio anyway? The two lads we've signed recently are probably just as good. You may be right although from the little we saw against Peterboro i doubt it about the last signing.
Window Cleaner Posted 8 February, 2011 Posted 8 February, 2011 You may be right although from the little we saw against Peterboro i doubt it about the last signing. why did we sign him then? You've got to give the lads a chance.
