Southampton History Question

What was that pub on the corner opposite the dolphin? The Southerner or the South Western? I think the co-op bank took over the building. All the falkanders used to drink there, I remember being in there the night the invasion kicked off and they all went steaming off to jump on the next ship.

If you're coming out of the Dolphin the pub on the right hand corner was The Southerners and on the left was The Queens (now a chinese upstairs and bar that changes its name every week).

The Southerners used to have some very, very, very rough topless barmaids, so bad it actually put you off your drink.

Upstairs in the Queens used to be a regular skinhead haunt.

In a similar vain, there is also the catermaran that was built in the garden on the corner of Avon rd & Midanbury Lane. It's been there at least 40 years. Take a look on google maps, you can also see it on street view.

It'll be a long wait for the great flood to reach the boat as it's only about 10m lower than the highest point in the city.

Lol, just had a look. That's brilliant. You'd have thought they'd need planning permission for that!

When I was younger we used to drink in the Spa Tavern

Can anyone remember the name of the pub, that was situated in an alley behind the Spa leading out onto Southampton Precinct?

It has slipped my mind completely

The Spa Tavern.....that's very familiar...where was that? For the life of me I can't remember but know I use to go there

The Spa was behind Boots. You get there by going from the precinct, up the side of the Echo building, and then it was at the top of a short road that now would lead you to West Quay, Costa Coffee entrance.

One of the old landlords was Tony Pocock of Tom Tackle, Buds etc, next to the Mayflower.

My mate and I always started off in the Southerners and then, in later days, would walk up to the Warrens.

We were in town on a stag night and, well oiled, we visited the Southerners. at the I knocked this lady's arm a couple of times, the second time I apologised and this gruff voice came at me from behind the make-up "That's alright mate", I couldn't get out quick enough and we all hightailed it to the next pub we could find!

The now infamous 'Tom Tackle' pub one side of the Gaumont the Punk shop on the other.

The Juniper Berry was another iffy establishment that attracted an eclectic mix. And the Warrens deserves a thread all of it's own.

Back to WWII. I've just been reading in 'Southampton's Children of the Blitz' that a bomber crashed after being shot down on the junction of Padwell/Oxford Road (coincidentally right outside one of my old shared houses). Apparently this is the ONLY German bomber that is know to have crashed in the Town's limits. So, that bomber in Sholing has either a) been put there b) was never recorded or c) was outside the old town's limits?

Me Mum has told me many a story outta that place. I dread to think what sort of stories she has kept from me that were assosiated with the Shield & Dagger.

The Shield used to be ramped most nights in the early to mid 70s, there used to some hard lads that drank in there at that and some cracking girls, there is a good chance that I might know your mum Scott.

Someone mentioned the coffee supplier in Above Bar. I used to love walking past that place, breathing in deeply.

Just a door or so along from there, opposite the old Information Bureau, there used to be a coffee bar - the Tudor? It was a normal cafe on the ground floor but with a coffee bar in the basement. One of my fave haunts in my youth.

Another favourite haunt, also a basement, was the Checkpoint coffee bar by the Bargate.

Oh happy days :)

Anyone remember Mr C's Nr Cumberland place, it was under a hotel

Side entrance below what is now the Southampton Park Hotel. "I've been to Mr C's" was a must have car sticker around the late 70s/early 80s

That reminds me of the time me a few friends stumbled into a pub called the Atlantic Queen. It was of those moments when something didn't feel right and the penny dropped a few minutes later when you took in the surroundings - the condoms on the bar and the cabaret pictures on the wall.

Not sure what the cake shop was called, was about 11 or 12 at the time I think just used to hang around in that area. When was the Marlings shopping centre built? Do not even remember it being built?

Must have been late 80s / early 90s? I'd moved away by then but my daughter was at So'ton University and I remember going into Dunnes (?) with her then.

I seem to remember a place called Rum Runners, was Southerners called that after it closed ?

The Juniper Berry was a classic dive, know as fruit pub by many. I did have some quite weird times in there.................

Rum Runners was called The Surrey Arms it was run by a chap called Roy Rose he had a bloody great big long haired Alsation, Nick Antony was the DJ who went onto DJ at the Painted Wagon there was also a bouncer called Spike who was as hard as nails. When it changed its name to Rum Runners is was bought by Sid Paddock (RIP) the ex boxer who worked in the docks and lost a leg in a raod accident when he got knocked off his motor bike. The Southeners was in Below Bar and run by the Aunt and Uncle of a Millbrook lad who's nick name was Hobby he used to drink Black Velvet and for his party tick he would float his false teeth on the top. Just for the record as I have said before Fridays was never where West Quay is, it was in London Road it changed it name to Mustang Sallys after Hariris sold the place.

The plane in the back garden in sholing is/was out the back of the last house in heath field road on the right just as it becomes constable close, I know this cos it is 40 yards from where I was dragged up!

That's amazing, It's still there, although it's no longer the last house in Heathfield. Its the last 'old' house facing the road, before you get to all the 1970's council type houses. You can see it on google maps, it's near the rear end of the garden.

I lived in Heyes Drive for about 7 years up 'till 2000. I was only about 100yds from it.

Wow, never knew that was there. Can just make it out on Google Maps. Used to walk that way every morning to do my paper round. Might try and take a peak over the garden fence next time I'm that way

I have confirmed with my 88 year old grandmother who would have been 18 years old the night MAYES (confirmed spelling) was bombed, she tells me it was a department store for posh people! After it was destroyed she remembers it being relocated to bedford place.

It is true there are medieval vaults running under the city around that area and lots of them, my great uncle was buried in one near Telecom House when that part of the city was destroyed in 1940 (he survived).

You should do the free city tour - you get to see the old medieval vaults they are fascinating, you can see the blast walls built during the war. look here http://www.visit-southampton.co.uk/site/whats-on-in-southampton/heritage-walks-of-old-southampton-p2331

Finally im my living memory it was Owen Owen (my mum worked there) and at the end was Huckleberries, Wimpey the BK.

I'm sure the Wimpy was further down near the Royal Bank of Scotland. It still is a cafe of sorts.

My old 96 year old dad has a great memory, born and bred in town, lived here all his life. I remember him telling me about the mass grave in Houndwell and the German Shot down in the Avenue, will ask him again the details. Good to see Sid Paddock and Roy Rose remembered, Roy's son is Kim who owns Eclipse Jewellery and read that he owns the building where Lee Barnard had his fight. Some great memories on here, I used to go to the Shield & Dagger during the 60's and 70's, loved the girls.

Does anyone remember when the saints shop used to be in the old shopping mall, next to the milkshake shop?

When was that again?

In the mid - late1970's Saints had their town centre shop just up from Edwin Jones (although the latter might have been Debenhams by this stage)

The plane in Heathfield road is nothing to do with WW2, it looks to me like a 50s trainer, possibly from Follands in Hamble?

On the subject of the bombing my Nans old house in Butts Road opposite the community centre had a long crack in the brickwork caused by a mine that exploded over the back of Swanmore Avenue - it's why that whole area has newer houses.

Have also heard the story about the Edwin Jones bombing but it's not well known outside the city, and I wonder what the truth is of it. Perhaps the true numbers of dead were covered up for morale? I've looked in a few histories and theres not a specific mention of it.

If it is the shop I am thinking of at bottom end of Hanover Buildings it was owned by Mick Channon he also had a shop in Salisbury as well.

The Hannover Buildings one started off as Mick Channon's Sports, but a few years later morphed in to the Saints Shop. Mate used to work there as a 15 year old and when he was working upstairs in the footwear section, some of the "older" crowd would come in, go upstairs, walk by him and lob trainers out the window!!!!

There is a small plaque in Hoglands Park, about 10 feet in from the fence just up from the Royal Oak pub that details events and losses. There are a few accounts and references on the web.

From doing a bit of digging it seems that that there's actually 3 planes kicking about in that garden. 2 De Havilland Vampires and a Fairey Gannet. - http://www.demobbed.org.uk/locations.php?location=2197

You can see one of the Vampires here - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Heathfield+Rd,+Southampton+SO19,+United+Kingdom&ie=UTF8&geocode=FUaiCAMd0XPr_w&split=0&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=23.875,57.630033&hq=&hnear=Heathfield+Rd,+Southampton+SO19,+United+Kingdom&ll=50.896575,-1.346114&spn=0.000384,0.000833&t=h&z=20

When I get a chance I may pop down there and have a look.

As I've said before, I grew up there (heathfield road), very nearby, never realised there was 3 in there. As kids we were more interested in the conker trees, he used to come and chase us off like a madman, I remember as an 8-10 yo seeing 1 cockpit there, he still lives there I believe, his twin sons are big in the windsurfing world I believe.
