Cabrone Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 You can forget your 6-0 away day canters........I want to see some mental toughness and this ugly, gritty, hang-on-in-there, hard fought, mentally demanding game last night was just the ticket and possibly the best win of the season for me. Make no mistake, Exeter are a really *****ly, spiky, awkward outfit at home and will take plenty of scalps over the rest of this season. It's credit to them that they have managed to carve out this reputation with such meagre resources available to them. For us to go toe to toe before finally driving the dagger home in the 90th minute is the kind of champion performance that I've been wanting to see for a long, long time and finally shows me that we really can do 'ugly' when we need to. Will last night's result be looked back as the fulcrum around which our season rotates? We'll see.
Turkish Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 (edited) According to Solent N'Guessan was easily our best player in the first half He was very quick strong and lively. Grew in confidence as the game went on. Surprised when he came off as AOC didn't have a good night at all, dont think he beat his man once whereas NG was beating his inside and outside all the time. We didn't play well on a terrible pitch against an Exeter side who were up for it and the better side for long periods. Harley was really good for them, cant believe we didn't bid for him in Jan. Nonetheless we got the win in the end although we could have been 2 up when Exeter scored, NG hitting the bar then Barnard from the rebound and RL missed from close range. Apart from the winner the most pleasing thing for me was the attitude of the players straight after the equalizer, not much celebrating and running around like we had saved a point, they were straight into the net to get the ball and back to the centre circle clearly intent on going on and winning the game. We followed Lallana down the A35 for most of the way, he was driving so cant be in too bad a way, hopefully he'll be back saturday. If he'd have been playing we wouldn't have hit the bar 3 times, they all have gone in and Davis would have reached the ball before Nardilello for their goal so we'd have won 5-0. Toadhall Saint Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 Good post. Completely agree. Its games like this that will most likely define the success of our season. Agreed - lots of positives from last night and we will need to dig deep on a few occassions in the next few months - and that will be starting on Sat. um pahars Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 Really enjoyed that result, even if I was awoken from a snooze with a barrage of texts screaming about Lambert's late winner. Dozed off disappointed that we appeared to be heading for a defeat with our rivals all semmingly winning, only to be awoken from my slumber with the positive news. Really can't stand listening to away games on the Radio!!! In person at the Posh on Saturday, so hopefully another 3 points (although would settle for a draw there). Minty Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 But trying to then pass judgement on an entire season, and/or predicting a final league position, just because we are 1-0 down at half time in a game, is pointlessBut after winning a few games, a mere fraction of the season, it is OK to rant about how the squad is strong enough for promotion and abuse anyone who disagrees, is it ? No it's not alps, and I'm disappointed (though not surprised) that you chose to make such a counter-claim. The simple fact of the matter is that making season long predictions based on very short periods of time, be it 45 minutes, or only 2 or 3 games, is always pointless. IMO you can start to gauge current form over 4-6 games IMO, but there are always anomalies, and we're dealing with Human Beings who are cannot be programmed to play the same way every game. I then tend to look at the last 10 games to build a picture of our overall form, with reference to the whole season before that. How people choose to judge our form and ability to get future results is up to them, and it's not my place to tell people how to do it, but my main point is simply that rational judgement about how a whole season will pan out is virtually impossible when people are absorbed in a game happening at that same time. And that applies if we're 1-0 down or 5-0 up.
Jonnyboy Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 I didn't listen so i don't know how we played etc I was up the pub but i can only comment on the merits of it. This was a game we could have easily lost last season, Pardew was no good and grinding out results, he was fine when everything was flowing and not when it all got tough. Exeter are a good solid team at home and are very compact and very organised. I wasn't surprised that we found ourself 1-0 down TBH. Great comeback though, that shows character and getting the win we needed will hopefully continue to build confidence around the place, especially with Brighton slipping up. All in all i am happy, not the best win but champions win ugly. So what about our Tranmere result FFS?
Iowsaintsfan Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 Missed my boat home! ended up not getting in til 2.30! rubbish! poor display from saints who never really got going until the last 20 mins or so, but good grit and determination. nice to see a winner in the last minute for us for a change! Jonnyboy Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 Not fantastically perturbed that we got the rub of the green last night and were fortunate to win. Its about time we had a slice of luck. Still worried about our first half performances away from home. Dont worry... about a thing... cos every little thing... gonna be alright... Window Cleaner Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 A great result, we ground them down and made the tactical changes necessary to get a result. A Man U type performance (remember Blackpool were 2-0 up against them). We are now on exactly 2 points a game from the last 20 matches and just need more of the same, why a draw on Saturday would now be an acceptable result. eelpie Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 What a relief. Played poorly first half and won. Our strikers really need to be more accurate in front of goal and need intensive training hitting small targets on the turn. But well done Lambo. You're fighting to recapture last years form and winning! Next week Exeter host Huddersfield. They should beat them!

Papa Shango Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 Not a classic performance by any means, but it's all about picking up three points at this stage, doesn't matter how we do it. It's the type of game we would have lost/drawn in previous seasons. I'm sure people will again be calling for Kelvin to be dropped after their goal, but remember he made a couple of brilliant saves to keep the score down when it was 1-0 Exeter. Thought Dany N'Guessan looked very good. He created a lot with his pace and strength. My only complaint from him was missing that chance in the first half that hit the bar. Thought we missed Guly last night, wasn't that impressed by Barnard. Chamberlain was relatively quiet. Thought our away support was the quietest I've heard all season. Dead silent for most of the game.

david in sweden Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 That was 2 weeks ago. We're much better now. problem is people expect to see fantastic football (like the first half v. Man U.) every week and according to reports the Exeter pitch was pretty heavy and it was hard to move the ball around. Visiting places like Exeter, Hartlepools and Tranmere are going to spoil good form, even with talent passing the ball. Some grounds are more like a rugby pitch than SMS' billiard table surface so it's good to see that we can grind out results when needed.

Essruu Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 you must have been stood just behind the goal. A few saints were having a go at the poor sod who was only doing what the p#### Exeter head steward told him to do. i do agree he could have crouched but i dont think he was able Yes I was. If he isn't able to crouch or sit on the floor, then he's surely not in good enough physical condition to carry out stewarding duties. What sort of use is he going to be in the event of an emergency, pitch invasion, a fight breaking out or if someone collapses and he can't bend down to assist? There was such a vast area from the barrier at the bottom of the few steps that they called a terrace to the pitchside barrier, that there was no point whatsoever in the stewards standing where they did and obscuring our view. Are our travelling stewards that much of a bunch of softies that they'll do whatever the home club's idiot stewards tell them when it was clearly the wrong thing to do? Even so, it was more that idiot steward's shrugging and smirking attitude that p!ssed me off. The Exeter Head Steward was as much of a d!ck too - shrugging off the complaints, only to then send a lacky over to swap stewards and have them finally crouch down. Completely stupid stewarding which could easily have caused more problems.
Evil Monkey Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 This was a huge result - far more important than, for example Oldham. It's good to win well with pretty football, but to get out of this league you've got to be able to win the battles and sometimes win ugly. Last night we: 1. Played poorly but won 2. Came from behind to win 3. Showed fighting spirit and fitness in the last 20 minutes 4. Saw Ricky score a couple of good goals from open play 5. Won without Lallana (or Guly, or Forte, or Holmes) 6. Saw quality from N'Guessen - looks like a shrewd signing. 7. Didn't let heads drop after a soft goal. 8. Coped with an awful pitch and got a win We'll need to do that a few more times but at least the team have shown they can do it. Very positive night. Great point. We hardly ever win without Lee 'sicknote' Holmes and Jonathan 'yet to make his debut' Forte.

redder freak Posted 2 February, 2011 Share Posted 2 February, 2011 I don't think it's fair to blame KD for the Exeter goal. Their player was offside and KD wasn't sure whether to cover him or not. The lino decided the offside player wasn't interfering with play because he stopped and stood still. That hesitation cost us because Fonte was marking the other forward and got beaten for pace. A bit harsh on Fonte, because I thought otherwise he had a good game.

I think the disappointing thing was we were supposed to be the passing team but resorted to hoof ball most of the match. The only time we looked like a passing team we scored our 1st goal. Exeter played round us really well and would be right to feel gutted about the result. That said, I couldn't give a rats arse how badly we play if we still pick up 3 points. Promotion chasing teams need to pick ip results when they are not at their best and that's exactly what we did. For all the neat football Exeter played our defence coped with it pretty well and KD pulled off saves when he needed too. Their goal had enough luck about it to go in against most teams so no blame from me. Glad I didn't curse the team by going to another match that we lose. Last 3 I went to went that way so I was worried before. Lol

Seems to me that Tisdale out thought Nigel for last nights match. It helps that Exeter know how their pitch plays (home advantage),but it was clear from very early on that Exeters system was getting the better of us yet Nigel waited a long time to try and change things. We won so it doesn't matter to much but there have been several times since Nigel took over were the opposition are getting the better of us from early on in games and management don't react until very late on Bentford and Hudders away come to mind.
