Exeter 1 - 2 Saints - Post Match Reaction

After that dire first half performance, I was preparing myself for losing. We improved during the second half, but there were all sorts of negatives after the blissful euphoria of our performance agianst ManUre on Saturday. Somehow Chaplin and Schneiderlin didn't seem to be bossing the midfield as they had agianst the Premiership leaders. Chamberlain seemed to be better shackled by the Exeter defence than the United defence. Questions were being asked by the Solent commentators on whether Davis was due to be replaced by Bialkowski and then Davis produced a World class save, although poor judgement on his part had gained Exeter the lead. I had been wondering whether Lambert had been substituted, as I had not heard him mentioned for some time and then he pops up and scores. Even then, I'm musing that mentions of Exeter being the 1-1 specialists would be better than losing, but a terrible anti-climax after Saturday and we really ought to win against Exeter having beaten them so convincingly at St Mary's. Even when Lambert scored his second to tie up all three points, I felt relieved somehow, rather than euphoric.

Perhaps with a little reflection, although it was a shame that Bournemouth can beat Swindon whilst we can't, at least we pulled back two points from Brighton's lead and the Skates lost to QPR. And on the bright side also, N'Guessan seems to have done very well indeed. I can't help but feel that Lallana has been a big miss against United and tonight and I can't wait until he returns to add some flair and sparkle. Also, I'm pretty sure that Guly would have been a threat tonight and there is also Forte to cast an eye over too.

It could be that these points won tonight in this nail-biter will be vital at the run in, so I'll reason it that the sign of a good team is that they can grab the points when not playing particularly well, that they can win ugly, that they can steal a match within a few minutes of the final whistle.

There's only one way to look at this game IMO - and it's as a fantastic result. Brighton did exactly the same as us earlier in the season, and I heard no-one slating them for it then.

Its an ''automatic promotion'' win. Rather than a ''play off'' defeat/draw if you get what I mean.

We wouldn't have won that game last year.

Even when we took our best player on the night off, we kept battling and won it. There must be such a good ethic and belief in the team right now.

This result bodes very well for us indeed.

COYS!!!!

TBF we didn't win that game last year

I think we have to accept that the next few games may not be super convincing as we have two new players who need time to gel, and also Lallana and Hammond will be coming back in. After that we will be charging up to first!

You can't go a whole season winning convincingly every week, you have dips - but it's important that you still pick-up points during those dips as that separates the automatic chasers from the also rans etc.

Not impressed with the performance (as it sounded on the radio) but we got the result and that's all that matters. I'm now sick of thinking we'll push on because we never do, but hopefully we'll scrape into 2nd come the end of the season. Nguesson was apparently our best player, so feel pleased for him.

Blimey reading the match thread I thought a host of SWF users were gonna jump off a bridge at half time due to Saints being 1-0 down!

To come back and score a late winner - I'll take that all day. Who gives a sh*t if Saints were terrible in the first half. Its the result that matters expecially tonight in regards to other teams winning in the top 6 as well.

All I can say about the web forum tonight is thank F*** it crashed, I was getting mighty ****ed off with the wrist slitters and had I have been able to post I would certainly have recived infraction points.

I can not belive some of the negative comments tonight even yesterday people were slagging of our new player before he has even kicked a ball.

I keep the faith even to the final whistle

Thanks saints for tonight win forget the boo boys and wrist slitters

Many ways to look at this game.

We did win, we did fight back. But why oh why did we find ourselves in this position ? We have a lot more games like this coming up.

I believe it was primarily down to the fact Exeter scored first it sometimes happens in football ;-) I guess theres always a BUT with you just for once take a positive!

Thank f**k for the result. At one point almost the whole top 8 or 9 (except Brighton) were winning except us. We have to keep up with the competition now, one slip-up could prove vital. Thank heavens we have much better GD than most around us.

As for the win I'd like to take responsibility for the 90th min winner after posting a fb status explaining I was waiting for saints to NOTscore a late winner .... reverse psychology is the shizz! lol

Good result what with two key players (AL and GDP) out! Onwars and upwards!

It's the people that constantly moan at the wrist slitters that depress me most.... ;-)

It was always going to be tough - all the more so because it followed "the lord mayor's show" of Saturday, so they ground out a great result.

The players are required to watch the film after each game - so that they can correct things for next time.

Pity some posters aren't required to read the match thread to see how dickish they sound whenever we face a bit of adversity.

No names, no pack drill, but you know who you are.

Well,we turned around a game we would have lost last year with no Ads, Guly, N guess in first start and Forte yet to play. Plus 2 points gained on Brighton. Must be a reason to be happy!

And Solent read my text out asking DM what he thought about saints changing from 442 to a diamond and going on to win! Made me laugh anyway!

Just reading the comment on the match thread from the wrist slitting idiots

Our season is in deep trouble - no-one needs me to explain that to them.

Really finding it difficult to find the right words to describe how disappointing this club of ours can be sometimes...

It is hilarious to watch them backpedal after we close out an win and make up ground on Brighton...

Was watching from the Bank (being a local pokal) so didn't see the goals as well as most saints will have.

Kelvin seemed to completely mess up for their goal but made some fantastic saves in the second half. Probs my motm.

Not much to say about the rest of the team really.

Midfield was non-existent until hammond came on. Nguessin looks good going forward but didn't cover back well.

Chaplow worked hard, lambo kept going... Thank goodness.

Really frustrating when we had a throw and no saints looked to receive the ball.

That's about it.

I must admit i was more than negative at HT but like a poster above said... This is the sign of champions. Man united often play **** and still grind out results with clinical finishing. We need our winning mentality back and this win bodes well for saturday. When Guly & Lallana come back and forte settles in we'll be rockin. Well done to N guessan for a great debut, we have a real talented player on our hands here and also NA for changing the tactics in what was a very open game. The wheels are in motion, everyone who wants to be on the bus is on it. Its about winning games of football. Its as simple as that.

We also now have everyone in the building trying to be the best they can be and we really do have a hard working, honest group of professionals at this magnificent football club!

why do people get so angry/aggressive to those who dare to state that everything is not perfect at our club?! if that was the case, this forum would be empty, or at the very least unbearably dull. everyone here supports the club, and would therefore prefer it if everything were perfect, but it is not. it is not an offence to have moan at things that aren't being done as well as they could be. rant over.

I didn't listen so i don't know how we played etc I was up the pub but i can only comment on the merits of it.

This was a game we could have easily lost last season, Pardew was no good and grinding out results, he was fine when everything was flowing and not when it all got tough. Exeter are a good solid team at home and are very compact and very organised. I wasn't surprised that we found ourself 1-0 down TBH.

Great comeback though, that shows character and getting the win we needed will hopefully continue to build confidence around the place, especially with Brighton slipping up.

All in all i am happy, not the best win but champions win ugly.

adkins reaction -

too open for his liking, we gave them too much possession in the middle of the park by trying to play wide, changed that by switching to the diamond sorted that out...but far too open for his liking..

n'guessen played well, but has not started for a long time and needed to use the squad....happy hammond is back

winning games like this is all that matters at the end of the day.
