Puncheon

86 mins GOAL Blackpool 1-3 Chelsea That is the goal of the night from Puncheon. Lovely little move as Crainie wins the ball on the left and plays in a nice pass to Beattie, who lays it off to Puncheon. He finishes brilliantly, low and hard into the far corner.

Three ex Saints, who would have thought it!

Even more amazing was its actually 4 ex saints turning out for the pool tonight! Crainey, Beatts, Ormerod and Punch! Great finish by JP again wish he could do that for us every week!

other than the goal and the shot cech fumbled..he gave the ball away ALOT

I couldn't give a fiddlers fart if it went in off his bum, players scoring goals against top European teams are not the type that division 3 teams should overlook IMHO.

Would you seriously not swap places with them and forego watching us against Yeovil tomorrow night?

He is quite literally four years ahead of marcus' masterplan. Do the math and accept that JP is a better player than most of our current squad added to which (IMHO) a better more experienced man manager would have sorted problems in the changing room and training ground to OUR advantage ON THE PITCH.

exactly who were you expecting in division 3..?

Loved the way basically everyone slates him when he plays for us but as soon as he scores for Blackpool he's absolutely years ahead of our team and we should take him back.

He doesn't fit in here, or doesn't want to, so he can stay away.

errm, yes......seriously, pardew has gone...what else did you expect in division 3 with a comment like that..?

we are division 3...we had a manager drop down a league to manage us.....

puncheon clearly did not want to be here

Yes, Saints might be in League One, but you will struggle to find many Saints fans or people in football that would play Puncheon ahead of Lallana or Chamberlain. Puncheon didn't want to sit on the bench in League One whilst Chamberlain played and he good enough for Blackpool and Millwall, hence he went out on loan.

Lallana and Chamberlain would walk into the Blackpool squad. Puncheon just happens to be 3rd choice because he isn't as good as those two.

Chambo and lallana are better than Puncheon, so he still wouldn't get in our starting XI.

You'll find a lot of very shoddy players who've scored goals in the Prem, doesn't suddenly make Puncheon a first choice winger for saints

I always found it infuriating listening to moans and groans, mainly from the Northam, when Punch ever tried something that didn't quite come off. It actually got embarrassing during one game this season and i think he was ironically cheered off when he was substituted. It's that kind of barracking that unsettles players and make them what to play elsewhere. Confidence players like Jason Puncheon need to be loved and appreciated, especially by the fans.

He's obviously got a lot of ability with the ball - as he's shown for Blackpool, Millwall and us on plenty of occasions. But it's his movement and ability to find space that i was most impressed with when i watched him live when he was with us. Think that is something that was horribly underappreciated by our fans. He's very hard to mark and defend, and i think his awkward style has been missed since he went out on loan. I don't know the ins and outs as to why he left, but it's difficult to accuse Adkins of not trying his hardest to keep him. The fans are responsible for Puncheon's departure, and i don't blame Punch one bit for wanting to play somewhere where he was wanted (baring in mind he had a few offers).

Although, what a side we'd have had if we had a fit and firing Punch available. Could have had Chambo and Punch hugging each touchline, creating ample round for Adam to run riot down the middle just behind Lambert. Now that is something i would have liked to see!

I agree with all you say mate, unfortunately the average football fan does not appreciate the intricate nature of the football pitch, unless you are consistently hitting the target, beating players and making crunching tackles you are sh*t.

This trait is somewhat magnetised within your standard northam seated mong.

the crucnching tackles point also applies to MLT's england game at wembley. One brilliant shot on goal, a dipper from 30 yards out that had the keeper beat and went very narrowly over the bar, our best attempt on goal that night as I recall it, gets completely ignored by the fans. Contrast that with a jump out of the way of a really horrible sliding tackle in our own half by the touchline which was clearly meant to be a legbreaker, and the crowd were on his back for the rest of the night. The pigsh*t thick crowd would rather have seen him carried off the pitch winning the ball in our own half, which he did anyway by getting a throw in, than have him stay on the pitch as the only potential match winner england had that night.

This is exactly what I try to say to people when they call someone "sh1t" because of one or two incidences. Few people (especially the mongoloids that we've got) rarely take into account the overall contribution a player makes to the team and to the game. Oh hell, some even judge players on "flicks and tricks". They don't do anything, but they look good so ... those players must be good, right? It really, really winds me up and I'm glad someone has brought this topic up...

Sadly there are far too many of our fans who see what a player doesn't do rather than what he does do.They all have weaknesses and some people like to concentrate on those rather than their strengths. In the course of a match they all make mistakes but if fans get on their back it only makes it worse.

Its like the conversation i had the other day with a mate about Guly, his exact words were that he was speaking superlatives about what he brings to the team and commented on a work colleague that borrowed his ST whilst he was away to pay attention to Guly's movement etc and what he does. His colleagues assessment was that Guly was easily the worst player on the pitch and he didn't get what my mate was on about.

My comment was 'Depends on what you are actually watching out for though doesn't it'

For some you simply HAVE to stand out on the pitch to be the best player for instance the guy in the tyro league getting MOM for scoring a goal, never mentioning a defender that had a stormer or a midfielder that won the ball, beat a player and played a cracking ball that the striker just couldn't miss. Sometimes its the players that don't stand out that make the most impact. (Puncheon not necessarily included in that last paragraph)

7 goals in nine starts (plus one sub appearance) for Millwall and Blackpool, none in 19 for us.

I was expecting this thread to turn up, but in retrospect I asked myself..what is the reasoning behind glorifying a player who

clearly doesn't want to be with us and who (last night ) scored a meaningless goal when his team was already 0-3 down?

I know he had one good game (Millwall) and scored a hat-trick, but after many decades of supporting (Saints) I came to the ultimate conclusion that the most important goals .. are those that win you points. Looking back at previous (big) goalscorers one can see that many times goals scored were merely for the record books and didn't affect the eventual result a tad.

Nice goal maybe, but I'm sure Punch will settle for one club or another next season, but it won't be us.

Puncheon playing his best, would have been better for us THIS SEASON than Chambo playing his best, imo.

Well done Northam.

What are you smoking??? Chambo rated at £10m chased by a host of top clubs allegedly and you want a journeyman troublemaker who has had fallouts at a number of clubs he has been at.

Let the tw*t work his price tag up. Fine by us.

I deeply resent the inference that somehow SFC or its fans are responsible for his lack of performance here, set in contrast as to what he has done elsewhere.

It is crystal clear that the problem lies in his attitude and that he simply thinks he is too big/important for a League 1 club like Saints.

Lets hope for his sake he doesnt quickly bore of his experiences at the likes of Millwall and Blackpool and start thinking he is top 4 material...

Rated at 10 million because of his age and potential. Puncheon's best RIGHT NOW for me, is better than Chambo's best (and I also think he'll end up world class, or near)

A better way to put it, is Puncheon brought more to us last this season than Chambo is this season. And in no way am I saying Chambo is s**t!!

Alps, I tend to agree aswell. He probably wouldn't have given us his best. It's all if's and but's, and the Northam certainly didn't help him find his form for us this season.

If you think players aren't affected by what they hear from the crowd then you are very wrong indeed. About a year or so after he left, i bumped into Ricardo Fuller at a function i was working at. I got the chance to have a chat with him about his saints career and in his own words, the fans were the main reason he left as if felt whatever he did, he couldn't please them. People underestimate the important role the northam stand plays in shaping a players confidence. As the rest of the ground are relatively quiet, players either feel absolutely loved or absolutely hated as that is the attitude of the northam (and this is generally the only feedback from fans they get) - there is **** all middle ground.

It's a massive shame because it's cost us a couple of very good players over the years. Especially 'flair' players where confidence is so important. Puncheon definitely falls into that category. When he was at saints i saw nothing but 100% effort from him, despite the booing (perhaps one of the reasons he got booed so much was because he kept putting himself in the firing line during games rather than shying away and 'hiding' as some players do when their low on confidence).

Bring him back. Beg him if necessary. Send Cortese and Adkins on bended knee and the promise of sexual gratification. Treble his wages. Make him captain, and a guarenteed starter. Give him a Zola-esque free roll. Give him the penalties. Allow him every 3rd Monday off, and let him have an extra helping of rissotto at lunch. Pay off any outstanding money he owes on his Blockbuster card. Rename the Northam 'The Punch' and give him the ability to pick which songs they sing so he doesnt get saddy waddy again. Give him an executive box. Make him a monogram embroidered snood. Put him on the bus. Let him drive the f*cker! Buy him his own bus if he doesnt want to share one with the rest of the dross in red and white.

Do all this, and maybe, just maybe...he'll pull on the shirt again one day. And we will rejoice.

Plenty of Saints players have become household favourites after having received less-than-warm receptions. For every Fuller there is a Crouch.

Puncheon couldnt be arsed knuckling down this season because he expected us to go up last season and considers League 1 beneath him. Then he started seeing AOC being picked ahead of him, and started poisoning the changing room atmosphere, rather than knuckle down and win his place back.

Puncheon didnt get sh*t from the fans last season, but then his performances were a lot better because he expected NPC football this season.

Once again: the problem is in his head, not the club.

I think some people are on a wind-up, very funny.

The fans drove him away?

Any player whose that bothered by a minority who get on his back when he fails maybe doesn't have the mental strength for the rigours of a pressure-laden run-in.

Ditto Fuller - he was terrible on occasions for us and also missed a shedload of chances when he first went to Stoke, and they were costly misses in his first season there.

If he takes the cash and the adulation he has to accept the stick when he performs poorly.

It's called life and if he isn't tough enough to be a footballer he should do something less stressful - if I was him I would score goals and run to the fans and tell them to shut the feck up, I wouldn't sulk and slip away.

Puncheon was always giving everything and didn't hide?

Yeah right - great touch, awful attitude, last bloke you want alongside you in a trench - and we are in a trench right now.

He's worth more to us than Chambo?

Mmm, I see what you are trying to say but would politely disagree - Chambo's not been great but has delivered more imo.

If you occupy the most vocal part of our ground you aren't intelligent enough to see what is happening in the game?

That's right, if you think a player is poor you obviously don't understand the sport, but only in this one section...there may be twenty vocal idiots in the Northam, don't pretend it's otherwise to make excuses for poor players.

Personally I think he's a good technical player whose finishing for us was woeful, he did hide on occasions, and when given an opportunity to return and let's not forget he was welcomed back by the fans and given support when he did, he turned round afterwards and said he didn't want to play for Saints.

I would humbly bury this myth about Puncheon being a great asset to the team alongside the one that Hoddle would have saved us.

He failed everywhere as a manager after leaving us.

Blackpool have turned a corner since Puncheon started playing, not all his fault obviously but unfortunately it's the corner that leads towards the championship.

One win in nine with him onboard?

I could do without that sort of lucky mascot in our dressing room right now.

Hopefully they agree terms and we get some cash before he repeats the behaviour he has shown at his last three clubs.

..and I'd absolutely agree. Sometimes, you have to look beyond maybe one or two deficiencies to see the real quality of a player.

For me, Fuller always used to get a lot of stick. One reason because he'd come from Portsmouth (moronic reasoning by, you've guessed it - morons). Another reason because he didn't set the world on fire whilst he was here. Why? I've no doubt the feeling or lack of warmth received from the 'fans' contributed somewhat. What they did see was a hit-and-miss ex-Portsmouth striker low on confidence. They didn't see the true quality he had. They didn't see that being a striker isn't entirely about banging in 20 goals or more a season and that's it. There is more to any position on the field than that.

Then again, try telling that to one of many resident mongoloids. "Ug ug no goals skate ****" wouldn't be a surprising reply.

Yet Fuller is one of MANY examples, and there are even better ones than that. In the past, previous to Marsden, Crouch and others signing, I'd find myself on here (or one of the previous boards) defending a player who had yet to even pull on the shirt for Saints!

There was a conversation between me and another on here (can't remember who) about Davenport not too long ago. Many people were saying he was one of our biggest contributors to relegation in 04/05. I dismissed this and mentioned Nilsson and Jakobsson - who were, in my opinion, two of the worst players I'd ever seen play for Saints. Then another poster (can't remember who still, sorry) backed this up with a fantastic post and statistic showing that Davenport only played at most, half a dozen games whilst Nilsson/Jakobsson played far more so, in reality, probably contributed more (or less), depending on how you look at it.

Though for some reason, it's Davenport they remember and Davenport they blame. I know CD was a disappointment (especially considering what an excellent prospect he was at Coventry) but he was most definitely not one of the most significant reasons as to why we got relegated. However, he probably had a bad game (Villa, home, in particular?) and that is what people remember.

Think that's what we asked for when Millwall wanted him.

Having banged in a few in the Prem I expect we could up it a bit more.

Andy Durman: Or bring him back to play in middle of midfield

Both possibilities. After all, the fair price is what somebody is prepared to pay for something and the best case scenario is two parties or more (including Millwall) bidding for the same product. Equally, we are short in midfield, although Puncheon seems to me to be better out wide. Whether he could do a job playing in the hole, or allowing Lallana to play in the hole is dabateable. Whether his mindset would be tuned in to coming back here or not is another issue.

think he is better in more central role

I thought he had a really good game playing central against Blackpool. Shame he didn't stick around as he might have brought us another dimension if allowed to make runs through.

That said, if he's got the chance to play in the Prem then there's no way he's coming back.

Funnily enough at the time they were sold they were both equally as accepted, I even remember the Northam adapting the Crouch "used to be a Skate" song for Fuller not long before he was sold, the "Fuller sh!1it" stuff was long over by then.

In a shocking turn of events, I actually agree with you regarding the problem with Puncheon. It's Puncheon. We haven't seen Bialkowski, Butterfield, Richardson, Jaidi, Seaborne, Martin, Dickson, Guly, Barnard or Holmes involved in bus no-shows or rumoured refusals to go on the bench or management team bust-ups, and all of them have had spells out of the team when not selected this season.

I didn't think Puncheon got much grief last season either, but his efforts noticably tailed off by the end of the season. When it comes down to it, even if he's awesome (which he's not), if you don't know what you're going to get from a player as a manager regarding attitude from one week to the next, you have every right not to pick him.

You certainly can. I don't think anyone's going to argue in favour of Dyer's ability to win headers, defend or not stand on the ball.
