Linking a TV to the the internet

dune

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of doing this, but what does it actually do?

I have tried doing it myself but it's far too complicated and i'm not remotely interested in geeky stuff like this so will pay a mate (who's a BT engineer) to do it if I decide to do it. I don't want cables so a wireless lan adapter looks to be needed - is anything else needed?

what actually are you trying to do dune? like, watch 4od, iplayer etc on your tv?

That's what i'd hope to get, i player youtube etc.

Have been toying with getting a dongle for my sony TV, but for the cost, it seems as though i'd get very little that i can't get through other means.

Cost is about £60 on ebay for the wireless lan adaptor for my samsung tv.

Isnt there some kind of wireless streaming system to link to a tv? I heard a review of a netgear one, been thinking myself about this, would be great to get the bbc iplayer onto the tv. I think it was about £80, and they reckoned it was very good indeed.

If it's a modern TV there might be a PC monitor cable input. I use this, works a treat for watching stuff off my laptop and the cable cost me about £2.

It's a SAMSUNG UE40C5100 40" Full HD LED backlit TV. So say i get it linked up what would i get?

Pretty sure that TV will have the connection, mine's a similar Samsung. All you need is one of these types of cables (VGA) http://amzn.to/hn0kD0, plug into the monitor output on your computer and into the input on the back of the TV, same as if you were plugging a monitor in. The only drawback for this is that the sound comes through the computer still, it's only the images that go through the telly. If you've got some alright speakers for your comp though it's not much of an issue, and way cheaper than the other options.

A blu-ray player for about £120 should have iplayer, however for £220 you can get a PS3 with the whole lot. Don't get the Wii as it is only capable of standard definition which looks a bit carp.

Don't really want a playstation as I have no interest in playing computor games and don't want to have controllers cluttlering the living room, so a blu ray player sounds the best option. The thing is how do you connect it to get i-player? I don't want to have to wire it up to my home hub, but do have a telephone connection by the TV - can this be used in some way? Or can it connect wirelessly to the home hub?

This is getting very techy so i'm waaaaaaay out of my depth.

Sony S370, it plays BBC iplayer, youtube and will soon play C4 and ITV player(You can get one for around £75 to £100). Conect it to your hub via hard wired cable or a wireless dongle in the back of the player. Be wary though as the Sony USB port at the back is not standard size and you have to buy they one which is about £70.

I have the same player hooked up to my router via cable (always better than wireless) and the main PC again hooked up via cable. I can see all my movies that are on the PC upstairs with no problems. Use a download called Serviio for creating a server as it is the only one that the Sony player seems to reconise. It will even play MKV files which are usualy bluray or HD quality.

Right so just to clarify if i buy an S370 and a dongle it will beam a signal fro my home hub and i'll get i-player etc?

Im pretty retarded too, but it might be that you have to select the source on your tv if the laptop is going into a different jack than the one you usually use.

i got a Sony BD s470 and am thinking about the various content bits. Lovefilm only seems to have the older library on offer but at a reasonable £9.99 a month. The more recent releases can be accessed via Qriocity but films are £3.49 I think, or £4.49 for HD ones. Anyone used Qriocity?

Yes, you need to get the tv remote and select the input source, normally there is TV, AVG1,2,3 etc keep flicking through them until it pops up on the screen.

Even if you just use the PS3 for the blu ray player and built in iplayer, 4od, itv player then it's still the best option. You dont have to have controllers cluttering up the room as you can get a ps3 remote (Ill have any controllers you dont want :) (Ive runined mine through getting far too info FIFA matches online!)

You can then stream downloaded movies, series etc from your PC over the wireless too as the PS3 has a wireless card in it.

You really cant go wrong with a ps3

Tried all that . or rather my 13 year old daughter did, and she knows more than me about it. Still didn't work.

On your laptop, press the 'fn' key and one of F5,F6,F7 or F8 (one of them should have a picture of two monitorish looking things above it?) until it outputs from your laptop.

you will also have to select the right source on the TV as mentioned

Done some research and i'm thinking a freesat hd box wirelessly linked with two home plug adaptors.

From what I can glean this should work, but some advice would be appreciated before I splash out.

People aren't repeatedly advising PS3 for no reason. It really is the best option! ;)

Found this for an X Box 360 (which i own). I'm rubbish at all this technical stuff but i've managed the download bit (i think) and now it's getting complicated :uhoh::

Not sure if you peeps are aware that it is possible to watch IPlayer content using the 360's media capabilities.

It's quite simple:

- Download the BBC IPlayer Download manager http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/BBC-iPlayer_Setup.exe

- Select the programme and download

- Go to the settings in the download manager and copy the location that the downloads are stored, something like: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Videos\My Deliveries\iplayer_live

- Go to WMP and Add to Library > Add

- Paste above location which should be added

- Go to videos on 360 and the iplayer_live should show and will contain your downloaded videos, all in WMV format :)

You may already know this but I didn't so just sharing.

Fair enough but do you have a blue ray player? Do you have the functionality to stream all your ooky movies from your PC to your telly? Do you have the best games console going? (Know you dont play games but still...) for a little bit of dosh (console only isnt a lot) you get mucho enjoyment.

Was more refferring to all those knock off nigel movies on your PC but yeah porn too. Why just have player when the PS3 has 4od, ITV Player and Iplayer already setup...

Sounds like you've made your mind up though... Give it 6 months and you'll have a PS3 after realising it was the correct option all along :)

In the medium term i'll probably get ps3 (s it's clearly the best option from what has been recomended) but for now i'm gonna try and get it through the x box. I've just powered it up and it's downloading some updates before I started get ******ed off trying to do what i'm trying to do and I don't really know what that is.

I posted this a minute ago - can you enlighten me?

When it says go to the setings in the download manager is that on the computer or on the X box?

Either way how do i do this?

I dont go near Xbox's (Urgh) but definately sounds like they are talking about the settings in the download manager you downloaded on your pc. Basically you just want to copy the location that the download manager is saving its files to and put it into windows media player which will actually be doing the streaming

Riiiiiiiiiiight. You might as well be talking in muslim for all I understand that, but at present the fkkkkin x box is downloading even more updates...... grrrrrrrrrr. Not used it for so long it's probably well out of date. Once it's done what it's doing i'll be trying to get onto that.
