Dog Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 ....yes, I think it's coming from under the stairs, I'll go and take a look. Gobsmacked, how no one actually died.
Pugwash Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 Burnt out consumer unit. Does that say OFF Peak?
Dog Posted 31 January, 2011 Author Posted 31 January, 2011 No it says PEAK. But it is for OFF PEAK storage heaters.
Pugwash Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 My guess is a loose terminal on one of the breakers, can become loose over time. HEADS UP FOLKS: Check your screws are tight every year or two - with the power off, of course!
Dog Posted 31 January, 2011 Author Posted 31 January, 2011 No! the terminals are cleary tight as they are still conected to the FB.
hamster Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 What is it? It's an area in his house that is below the stairs. hth
Whitey Grandad Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 When the fire inspector came to look at my little factory he said that the electrical boxes were a common source of fires. I had been storing cardboard boxes next to the main switch/trip unit so they were soon moved. Aren't fire inspectors getting younger? This one was only about 12 years old.
Pugwash Posted 31 January, 2011 Posted 31 January, 2011 Dog, I can't see any cables other than the neutral (blue). Have they been clipped off? It looks like they were miniature circuit breakers, or was it fuses? difficult to tell as its so badly melted. What I meant about loose terminals is where the individual circuit cable connects into the breaker or fuseway. Possibly the third from the left, as it seems to be the most burnt. Whatever - a hell of a mess. Lucky you were in at the time or you would have had a serious fire.

saint francis Posted 2 February, 2011 Posted 2 February, 2011 Trouble is when these things get really hot and get fire inside them, they tend to melt and blacken the plastic. Can't be sure from the photo, but you probably need a new one.
Pugwash Posted 2 February, 2011 Posted 2 February, 2011 Do you think so? Yeah - my office burned down fourteen years ago from something similar. It was a Sunday.
