Transfer deadline day thread!

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache

Means very little now with all the speculation around him leaving. 3 1/2 years should mean 3 1/2 years. if only.

IN theory of course you are correct, but It never will until the abolish transfer fees and ban agents. no club is going to keep a player worth £20m for all his contract knowing he'll leave for nothing at the end of it. They'll cash in when they can. Equally if a player signs a contract at 17 on £5k a week but two years down the line are being tipped for greatness and gets tapped up and offered £20k a week somewhere else with an agent in their ear telling them to move on as they get a handsome % of the fee then they are likely to want to go. The only thing contracts mean these days is a temporary show of commitment from the player and club, both will be shot of the other if its in their best interests.

some of these trnasfer fees being banded about are obscene.

football remains out of touch with the real world.

If we ever return to the Premier league we would never be able to compete.

And im not sure i would want us to.

Someone made a comment on the BBC transfer page that if Carroll does move for £30m+ he'll have cost more than David Villa....ffs! who's the better player??? seriously mental.

we'd have Sky money though and Blackpool seem to be competing well enough. The art of the EPL is surviving the first season combined with astute investment.

Couldn't agree less. As someone who watched Beattie play for 60 or so mins in the old firm game at New Year, I think he would be a terrible signing. Doesn't look fit, didn't look interested and the fact that he didn't even make the bench for the CIS cup semi final yesterday even though Rangers have lost Kenny Miller to Bursaspor speaks volumes. He really is a player who has lost his way, and it's too big a gamble to try and get him back to show him the right road.

how is getting a loan player that means adding to the squad been considered a "gamble"?

I think the second season can be tougher. Teams sometimes do okay in the first season because they are a surprise package to the other clubs. After their best players have been cherry picked by the established teams in two transfer windows, they soon plummet back down to the Championship. Look at Blackpool, Charlie Adams to Liverpool and they are "reportedly" looking to replace him with Andy Reid. Big drop-off in talent.

You can't really compare Blackpool in a 16k seater stadium with Saints in a 32k seater stadium and the estate of a billionaire.

Saints when in the Premier League again will be a very different proposition to Blackpool in the transfer market.

Sounds like Chaplow at Preston. I'm not saying Beattie is doing well and would continue that here. I'm saying he's struggling and if there's anywhere he can turn it round, it's here. To sign a very good experienced player in league 1, you have to take a chance on someone struggling or deemed past it by others.

As for unfit, uninterested etc., those criticisms have been thrown at Lambert as well this season.

But we need players who will make an impact now, not in a couple of months when they've regained form / fitness/ desire etc.

Glasgow Saint summed it up for me, he has been shocking. If you can't get up for an old firm game when he knew he had the chance to break into the squad - even then there were rumours that Miller would be sold - then sorry, he doesn't deserve the chance to come back here.

They probably just like the name, Alvin Martin did a great job for West Ham for a long time, probably still got a few spare Martin 5 shirts hanging about.

That'll be it then.

Seriously though, it's an odd one as he's hardly figured for the first team this year, so it doesn't feel like a tabloid inventing stories to fill pages.

I guess it's the Wally Downes link?

Must be that, can't remember who they have in central defence nowadays but Downes may well have identified Martin as a shrewd investment for the future.I suppose Grant could have had him looked over when he was at Skate as well as part of his local scouting network.

jordan sibley on twitter ' transfer deadline day could be a long day in the office ' read into that what you will . i would of copied and pasted but dont know how to on my phone !!

For him he's probably just commenting on all the rumours that will circulate. He is one of the contacts for press and media enquiries, so his phone will be busy today.

He's probably fielding hourly phone calls along the lines of: "it's Sky here, have you sold Chamberlain yet?"

However, let's hope he's preparing a couple of webpages saying "[insert name here] signs!!"

that's the Newcastle press meeting you're on about.

and why would they do that just to announce a brand new signing from L1?

no one will be leaving and no one will be joining IMO.

Link to a little more detail here.

Looks like it came from a story in The Mirror where it says that a bid was made by West Ham for Martin yesterday.

Hmm, assuming it's true can't see Martin being too impressed if he's blocked that move given the lack of appearances he's had under Adkins - Eastleigh to Prem in 2 seasons is not too shabby really. He'd be earning at least three times his current deal I suspect.

take a punt on conor sammon.

worth an enquiry atleast.

derby have had a 400k bid turned down.

if we have any serious aspirations we do need to look towards preparing for the championship.

mentioned this guy on the hcdajfu thread a few months ago - big, fast and scores goals! Turned down scunny a few weeks ago - Celtic linked now!

His team mate Alexei Eremenko is also outstanding.....

So why is Jordon Sibley on his way down to Staplewood then?

If there was any truth in the Martin link it beggars the question as to why he can't get a game with us at the moment.

tbf the change in management kind of derailed his season. I reckon he'd be a regular in this team if Pards was still here.

Different managers have different opinions though.

If he goes or stays he'll still be bench warming for a NPC club next season.
