Tamesaint Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 No need to get defensive - you THINK the Northam was loud because of where you sit. In the Itchen centre the MU supporters were loud enough to drown out much of the noise from the Northam. And anyway, my point was (as previously noted in other threads) that our support is nullified by the sheer fact that every large game our most vocal supporters are fragmented to other parts of the ground to make room for the visitors. THAT to me is just plain stupid and needs to be addressed by the club as a matter of urgency IMO. Not getting defensive. I sit in the Chapel and thought that we out sung them. Didn't you hear "Walking in a Liebher wonderland"? I do not disagree with your point that fragmenting the fans is just crazy.

THAT to me is just plain stupid and needs to be addressed by the club as a matter of urgency IMO. That was the impression that you gained based on where you sit. The ManUre fans were much closer to you than the Northam/Kingsland fans and the Itchen fans in the corner next to them were adjacent to you, so they were faced side on to you. The best position to judge the contest between us and them would be the Chapel centre. But I agree with you and others that it was ludicrous to allow an away team like the glory hunters to have two thirds of the stand behind a goal. As the Police erected barriers to separate both sets of fans after the match, there ought to have been no problem with putting them into a corner somewhere. The Sholing Shadow Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 Yes, the ref was clearly on the Fergie Approved List. Has it been mentioned? sorry if yes; but why were there so many patches of empty seats? it should have been a sell out, you couldnt get tickets. Bensfcno1 Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 I reckon we could get away with mistakes like that and still go up! Only quality like man united convert oportunities like that more than 1 in 10, especially League one teams. however without those mistakes it would be easier, But when have saints ever done anything the easy way? Stuartinoz Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 Not sure why the moronic ManUre fans were allowed to stand 5 deep behind the hoardings!? Every time they sparked into life some idiot either fell over the hoardings got nailed by a steward and carted off or just ran on the pitch...... saintjay77 Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 My opinion, for what it's worth, we played really well in the 1st half, even though we rode our luck a couple of times it was evened out as we were unlucky at the other end a couple of times too. 2nd half however showed up a few things. We are getting good at plan A but when Man U switched to have some width our only answer was to try and defend it. Doing that we lost all our positive forward play. Fitness gave way 2nd half too and showed how far behind a 2nd string prem team we are. All the talk of the ref being against us is a bit odd too. I thought the free kick that led to their goal was a but soft but thought it was still a free kick. Loads of free kicks against us at the end but they looked like good decisions too. We were knackard, desperate and they were playing keep ball effectively. 1st half we fully deserved the lead but 2nd half I thought Man U deserved theirs too. Fair result and the team can be proud of their effort. Back to a promotion chase and a marker of the levels the team need to progress too so a good day in all. I was worried we would get embarrassed as we wouldn't show up. Ended up being proud of the team and hope they feel the same way.

Same as the blue few cup game, played the c*nts off the park but they have prem-quality strikers who rarely need a second chance. Interesting that ferguson made that point as well in the post match, 'michael owen, one chance, one goal'
Saintandy666 Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 Such a great performance, very proud. What was interesting for me was to watch which players looked comfortable and which players were clearly(while putting in 100% effort), had reached the end of their abilities. Those who looked like they had reached their abilities were in my opinion: Lambert, Barnard, Butterfield, Harding. I also don't think Fonte will ever make the premiership. However, Oxo, Schneiderlin and suprisingly Seabourne looked VERY comfortable yesterday.

Agree with you that we need to sort out the away fans in the northam issue, but we definately outsung them yesterday. Thought it from the Kingsland and confirmed it watching the game back, i expected United to make some noise but credit to the players and fans for keeping them quiet. aintforever Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 It would be very unlikely that a Div 3 club would get to the final, but it's retarded to say there is no chance. It would just take a very lucky draw and a couple of fluke results.

lethallee Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 I actually thought we created better attacking situations in 2nd half. It was just that the final pass was lacking and didn't get enough crosses into box for Lambert and Barnard to be effective. Neither of them held the ball up well enough imo. Up to final third we played well though.

Legod Third Coming Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 A home tie against Crawley if we'd beaten them. Who said we could never get to the final? That presupposes that all things other than our result were constant. And that is just bonkers. If we had won, a whole alternative future would have proceeded from that outcome... Tommy Mulgrew Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 We played very well but, strangely, ManU didn't pressurise us and our general quality was allowed to shine through. MOM as undoubtedly Spiderman: he would not have been out of place in a full MU side. Also excellent were Chaplow (but he has no pace ), Butterfield and Harding. Fonte was very good, as was Seaborne. Guly demonstrated he has a fine footballing brain and shone in patches but lapses of concentration made him sloppy at times. AOC and Bart were good. Barnard and Lambert tried hard but weren't really sharp enough against a PL reserve defence. I admired the plan to play AOC out of position but it did mean our right-field crosses all came from a fullback. And we had the good sense not to do our utmost to get a replay after their second goal. It would certainly have been good to play in front of the ManU home crowd but of course promotion is our main objective. Let's hope we can perform similarly against League 1 opposition for the rest of the season. Well played Saints. COYR

Well I was sat alongside them and they certainly werent loud until they scored. Before that there were the Saints goading chants of "shall we sing a song for you", "are you scousers in disguise" and eventually "your support is f*cking shlt", as well as the usual we support our local team/live round the corner, you only live round the corner etc, and I didnt hear a peep out of the munichs fans in reply. My personal favourite was "fergie fergie youre a c*nt", but then I'm always pleased to hear that confirmed.

Tokyo-Saint Posted 30 January, 2011 Share Posted 30 January, 2011 Just watched the game back and we were fantastic for 60 minutes and according to what I heard at the game and watching it back, we definitely out sung utd until they took the lead. The difference was Nani and their change of shape. The brought on width but we kept with the narrow diamond. The wingers were give far too much room and it stretched the middle. If NA would have maybe played five across the middle we might have just held on. In the end a fair result though.

Thought it might be of some interest. http://www.zonalmarking.net/2011/01/30/southampton-1-2-manchester-united-fergusons-switch-back-to-a-system-with-width-turns-game/ I hadn't seen this and have made it a thread of its own - for those of us that want to talk tactics (not many games with such obvious tactical changes as Fergie's either). I have no doubt that it will drop like a stone off the front page within hours, as there's not much scope for abuse or hilarious put downs in football tactics.
