Saints 1 Man Utd 2 - Post Match Reaction

Morgan was a class above everyone on our team, he was sublime, but can he play like that on a cold tues pm at exeter? Lambert loos nakered. We need a fast centre forward asap. Jaidi will play tues and we missed him last year at exeter. Cortese's ticket policy was the reason we didnt sell out. Madness.

Today showed the potential that our team has, and I agree we need a fast striker (can't imagine N'Guessan is that pacey).

The club probably made more money by linking the game to Carlisle than just selling out today.

Morgan did it on a cold Tuesday in Oldham recently so why not. The whole 'fancy dan foreigner won't fancy it in the cold' is a really lazy stereotype anyway.

Didn't disgrace ourselves which was my main concern, a drubbing would have done us no good at all.

Not seen a ball curl like Lambo's first free kick, shame it was not a couple of feet lower.

Harding man of the match for me. We got a bit sloppy and ran out of legs in the second half which perhaps needs to be worked on, but overall they did us proud

and in the first half we looked a slick outfit.

Whats the history with Nani, why was he booed whenever he had the ball?

+1 dead proud.

Superb goal. Proof of where we belong.

Part of me is glad it didn't go to a replay though .

Exactly.

The perfect result - because we have enough midweek away games to complete in the coming weeks to catch up with the League 1 leaders.

A scintillating performance by the team and we only lost by one goal, scaring the sh*t out of United in the process. Key players sensibly subbed with Tuesdays match in mind -Which we must win! Because promotion is priority.

And Brighton and Sheff Weds won -so they will have the extra matches to play now -not us!

The cup is dead. Long live promotion!

Very proud of the team - 1st half we could have been Prem opposition I thought. Got very leggy after 60 mins and Fergie knew it would happen which is when the supersubs came on a cut us a new one. That said, it was two sloppy passes from Dickson and Gobern that let the side down (and Gobern showed he is nowhere near the standard required for this team now). Outstanding performances were from Butterfield, Chaplow and Schneiderlin (surprisingly). When we left the ground a couple of players came out and Guly was on crutches for some reason - hopefully precautionary. New lad Dany hardly touched the ball when he came on which was a shame.

All in all a fantastic days footie - got to shake hands with Nigel Adkins, Franny Benali and one of my heroes Mick Channon. Did the stadium tour before the match with Nigels A's Mum and Dad (very nice down to earth people) - he came into the corridor outside the changing rooms to take a photo of our little group on his i-phone! Jimmy Case did a little turn on the mic and we had John Motty Motson do a little bit of talking at the end to auction off his match notes (he was commentating for 5-live) - he got £600 for the Saints Foundation.

Only one grumble and that was that from where we were the Man Utd supporters made more noise than us for large parts of the game. Northam was not at the races today, but of course it was half decimated. This needs to be corrected by the club IMO. Also, there were no chants for Markus which was a bit disappointing. Oh well.

Proud to be a Saint today. COYS!

Last thought. Very proud of the whole team.

BUT - if we had a sharpshooter like we had two of last year, we would have won. Glad we didn't though with the busy league programme in mind. However, we WON'T achieve promotion unless we sign one sharper, predatory striker.

Spend the money this weekend Nicola!. You know it's true!

Oh BTW.

Plastic fan lesson one : Don't leave 5 minutes before the end of the first half so you can get a beer in the concourse

Plastic fan lesson two : Don't then run back onto pitch side with your beer and start spraying it over everyone - remember that big bloke in red - that was me.

Here we go and this time they won.

Does this man ever shut up.

Didn`t see us playing narrow, and if I not mistaken didn`t their best stuff come from De Silva down the left

Very proud to be a saints fan tonight

MOM for me Schniederlin

I agree with this, they played a diamond formation to match us. I think if they played 442 they would have had more joy. Still a great game by Saints, and you can only play what is laid out in front of you.

To be fair it is not just 'plastic' fans as you call them that go for a beer 5 minutes before half time, but many season ticket holders I know go about this time to get a beer and food. Each to their own is what I say. It takes all sorts.

My first game of the season today, call me plastic if you want but I've been to many games in the past and there are reasons I haven't been able to go.

Anyway.... I thought we played some great stuff, for me Chaplow was man of the match but Guly was a very close second. We looked very competitive and passed the ball very well. Battled and won a lot of the ball, but we faded and their subs and our bad passing undid us.

Overall a very good performance and we did ourselves proud.

It has to be said, the United fans were pretty crazy. Having 300 of them at the front of the stand caused the stewards all sorts of problems, especially when they equalised. Toilet roll, a flare and a fan on the pitch topped it off. They were very loud, as ever, but us scoring and them getting frustrated at their team certainly shut them up for a good half an hour during the match.

Man U away fans are one of the best away fans in the country, and their home fans are terrible! I know many Man U fans who hate home games, but the hardcore away fans are fantastic!

With all due respect, I would suggest that you get a hearing test next week.

Man U fans started to sing after the second goal - hence the chant of you only sing when you are winning. Before then they had been pretty quiet from where I sat.

... and isn't " there's only one Markus Liebher // walking in a Liebher wonderland" about Markus Liebher?? I certainly heard that during the first half.

Can't believe there is a fair amount of criticism aimed at Guly on this thread. His touch and awareness was sublime and he was involved in most of the good things we did. Ok, he gave the ball away a few times but overall the guy was superb. Speaks volumes that someone spoke to a bunch of their fans who thought he was our biggest threat. He wasn't our man of the match because that honour can only go to Morgan but he oozed class.

I was in Block 35 and the support was great all around the Northam and well in to the Kingsland.

There was a great Markus chant as well.

Not often that I am happy when we lose, but I have to say it was the perfect result today in many ways. Highly unlikely we would win the cup and so playing the best team in the world, and giving them a good game is probably a fair way to make our exit. Was dreading a replay - yes, it's a good one for our travelling army, but really we didn't need anymore distractions to the league. As a result, I was kinda hoping that united would just edge it - not good, I know, but you take my point.

Very proud of the lads - everyone put a shift in and did the club, city and it's supporters proud - well done NA as well.

They're Man United, they do what they want!

You do know that this could be any set of fans though. I chose to make a stand at away games an remain standing. If everyone does it there is not much that can be done. They agreed as a set of fans that they would stand at away games. Fair enough I say.

Great effort from the team today. Can't really say any of them had a bad game, although a couple weren't at their best. Agree that Butters, Harding and Morgan were all excellent but my MOTM has to be Chaplow. Not just for a belter of a goal, but also a great battling display in the middle. We were the better team first half, no doubt about it. I was just standing there feeling disappointed that we had nothing to show for our efforts when Chaplow scored a belter. I went bananas. Second half... Well we all saw that coming a mile off but we can still take heart from the fact that a) we were the better side for an hour, and b) their goals came from momentary lapses of concentration. Other than that we were seldom too stretched at the back. Fonte had Gibson in his pocket and Bart, dodgy kick aside, put in a very mature performance.

Not too many negatives really. A few spanners in the Utd end including marine distress flare man again, waving that thing around like a caveman who's just discovered fire. Nani too. He is a diving sh*t. Also im not going to sit here and pretend I'm glad were out, concentrate on the league etc. I'd have loved to have gone through but that's life. Onwards and upwards. COYS!!!

Went away from the game with my head and heart held high - we shut them manc fans up for a good 20 mins and loved every minute of it. Played some great football and the lads should be proud as am I.

Southampton and we do what we want was a beautiful moment!

Back to grindstone Tuesday and here's to pushing on to promotion................

Does it matter where their fans come from they are a great club with a great tradition of winning.

We played really well for long periods but they had class players up front we had Lambert and Barnard who tried had but had no pace

Yes, it does matter where their fans come from. It is the reason that they have that strike power up front, paid for by plastic glory hunters from all around the country and the World. When I arrived at the stadium, there was a group of about 20 Chinese/Koreans/Thais, wherever they came from, all posing for photographs in front of St Mary's with their ManUre merchandise.

Now, it might not matter to you that clubs like ManUre, Chelski, Liverpool and Arsenal attract these plastics who help to perpetuate their dominance of English Football, but personally I'm always far more happy when we or anybody else beats them. I also deeply resent the extra money that they generate from being favoured with televised matches that then also perpetuates and increases their following of the plastics.

Nothing would please me more than Leyton Orient or even better Crawley doing a York City against them in the next round.

Weelll, it's after midnight here in Italy and don't tell my manager as we're playing er.. today and I've had a few, but that wasn't bad, was it?

I had to explain to a few locals in the bar I persuaded to show the game that we were a 3rd division team, and they then had to work that out in an italian context, and were suitably impressed. Silly mistakes and it sat up so nicely for Owen at the end but so many positives that I'm not too upset. Hopefully there might even be a few extra against Carlisle to show their appreciation: it would be great to have 28k against them too. Go on, take along a mate and show the world we aren't plastics..

To be fair about 75% of United's travelling hardcore support is actually from Manchester. And even if they're not from Manchester, fair play to them for actually spending their time and money travelling away to follow their team. It's the United 'fans' who never bother even attempting to go to games and live nowhere near the place that bothers me. And besides we've got plenty of fans that aren't from Southampton. You only have to look at some of the locations of users of this forum to see we have supporters all over the world.

Nobody has mentioned how badly Bart performed. Kicking and distribution very poor (as usual). Kelvin would have inspired the defence.

Jeez!! Twice, TWICE! He skewed it from a kick, to my mind he looks comfortable and seems to have control of his goal area: maybe better than Kelvin. If I was Kelvin I would be a little concerned and hoping that he doesn't pick up an injury.

I thought we played very well, it shows that if we play a footballing side we are different gravy.

What was great is that NA's tactics and the teams performance saw the departure of the lesser Da Silva twin at half time, then Rooney and Berbatov being kept on the bench because SAF had to put players on the pitch likely to put in the crosses that were not being delivered by Man U. The ref was disappointing blowing up for chuff all against us and giving us nowt for worse (but when has that been any different when the big boys are in town).

Chappers, Spiderman, Harding, and Butterfield were fantastic today. And tackle of the day was towards the end when Butterfield, probably fed up with the rolling about from Nani at the lightest breath on him, just took him out in style as if he was saying "now that is a tackle worth rolling about after you Jesse".

And did anyone else spot Scholes taking a kick, which missed, at Oxo as he went past him to join a counter attack?

Well done lads I enjoyed that........... Like others very proud.

=Saint Billy;951221]

I think it is because he is such a great player, and when he came on the game changed completely and we could not deal with him.

The booing was because the cheating bastard gained them a free kick or two from his attempts at amateur dramatics, feigning mortal injury at the merest contact from our players. But what took the biscuit, was his dive in the box, which thankfully even their referee didn't fall for, although neither did he card him for it. That was the reason for the booing. In fact we handled him quite well mostly.

Really enjoyed that, I never understood the ''well get thrashed comments'' - we were always going to give them a game, we're a very good team now. The first half was pretty comfortable for us, we were aided by Man Utd not really turning up, but we turned the screw on them and our midfield ran the show I felt.

Morgan was just sublime in the first half, overshadowed their midfield on his own, the boy is a classy classy player. I was amazed by how much time they gave us and space to turn, Lallana would have had fun today and it's a bloody shame we couldn't see him out there.

The second half we tired, as I felt we would, as they upped their game. They were always going to have a ''moment'' in the game but it's just a shame that their winner came through a mistake from us, but it's pointless dwelling on that.

It was a good advertisement for us as a club, I thought we produced some lovely football at times and we matched them with their passing in the first half, even bettered at times.

Best outcome really. No injuries, no suspensions, not thrashed and no replay - so a very good day all in all and a nice boost for everyone connected to the club. Let's hope this is the start of putting Southampton back on the footballing map.

My view almost word for word.

Yes, of course we've got fans whose locations aren't shown as Southampton. But most of them originated here or hereabouts. That is the difference. But of course, I agree with you that those who don't even bother to go to matches are the problem, as nevertheless they're the ones who pay for the merchandise, subscribe to ManUre telly on Sky and otherwise put money into their coffers to enable them to buy players worth more than our entire squad.

Great performance, annoyed RD came on and cost us a goal rather us gone out from a giggs or nani special, shame some fans were poor today and didnt create good atmosphere utd fans out sang us.

Chaplow and butterfield played well for me harding oxo and guly were poor at times.

You what? I didn't hear a peep from the Man U fans until they scored. They deserved the "Only sing when you're winning" song. I thought that they were very poor in comparison with previous times. Actually - looking at your comments on our players you are not much of a judge of them either.
