dan17 Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Very proud of the team but still a little bit gutted. We should have taken more of the chances that we had in the first half (Guly - free header). Gave the ball away far too much in the second half and if you keep doing that against Utd then they will punish you. Ref was not going to give us anything in second half, but seemed to award Utd a free kick everytime they lost the ball. Thought it was a little odd that AOC was not put on the right wing at any point in the match, when whenever I have seen him he has torn teams apart in that postition. Still gutted for Lallana cos he would have had a field day in that first half, but I would much rather have him fit for league duties anyway. Overall very proud of SFC today and have had many texts from mates praising our performance. Ultimately Utd just had a bit more class and fitness which showed in the last 30 mins of the match. Awful for Dickson to give the ball away without looking where he was passing, but he will know himself what a mare he had. Onwards and upwards in the league!!! COYS!!!! Legod Third Coming Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Mistakes are the difference between Premiership and League One aren't they really? And that difference was wafer thin today. Without two simple mistakes we would be in the draw tomorrow. Cut those out and this team, with Lallana back, could well go on to win this league and compete very well in the next one up. Well played to all the lads and best not to dwell on the slips that cost us. I hate losing but I'm glad we can now focus all our efforts on thumping Exeter. They will have been watching! IN MY DAY Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Perfect result we had a tickle at beating the Premiership leaders, we showed millions at home we are a class team, we can now concentrate on the league, and my man of the match goes to Nigel Atkins for playing Oxlade out of position for the whole match to convince Fergy and others that he's not worth 10mil quid at least till the end of the season anyway. Result. But very proud.
bolo Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 first game for me since the jp thropht final and so my first game under Adkins' tenure. I didn't think much of the tactics. We were so one sided and i thought our right side was there for the taking... But we played very well for 65 min... Our subs were rubbish, couldn't pass and hardly touched the ball!!! Not convinced by the half time team talk, saints just retreated into our half. The ref must be a closet man u fan! Bl**dy cold out there too!!!!! Legod Third Coming Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 A good performance but it was our own downfall. Utd weren't quality, it was our mistakes which led to both goals, which is disappointing. Even more so for the second, from Dickson who had only just come on. Chaplow was Motm, however I thought Chamberlain was awful. Clearly he's affected by the transfer talk, he bottled challenges which on other days, he would have won and been clear through. Either you want to be here, or you don't. Are you quite mad? He had a good game.
kwsaint Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 no-one can knock how we played. a proud proud team but ultimately we didn't have the legs to finish it off. in a strange way it means we can concentrate on the league but still gutted we didn't win. CanadaSaint Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 I actually think that Fergie panicked a little today and he was lucky that they didn't pick up an injury after using all their subs so early. It's sad that the classy passing and movement we displayed today doesn't cut too much mustard in League One. It's much more suited to the two divisions above us but we've got to get out of this one first. And no matter what division we're in, we need to be better at taking our chances when we're on top. Papa Shango Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 A few thoughts Very good performance, have no real complaints. Wasn't expecting anything other than a comfortable United win, so to give them a scare and match them for much of the game was a credit to the team Never mind Chamberlain, I wouldn't be surprised if Ferguson starts to keep tabs on Schneiderlin after today. MOTM for us without doubt. How some fans don't rate him is ridiculous. He is a top draw player. Danny Butterfield looked good. I'd rather have him at right back than Richardson. Dan Harding probably had his best game this season today. Don't think much to some of United's fringe players like Gibson and Obertan. Ryan Giggs completely changed the game when he came on. Even at 37 the guy is a class act and a credit to football. Scholes has still got it too. We gave him way too much space. Contrast that to the subs we had and that was the difference between the two teams. Bit disappointed with United's support which is usually first class. Was ok at times, especially after they took the lead, but they're usually a lot louder than they were today. Our support was pretty good though. On the plus side, no distractions now. Getting out of this league is obviously number one priority and we have no excuses now. Massive game on Tuesday at Exeter.

SuperMikey Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Very proud tonight, we were excellent in the first half. Nani came on and changed the game - he is absolutely class. Dickson had a bit of a mare when he came on but everyone else was great and should be very proud of themselves tonight, Chaplow and Schneiderlin especially. Solent blasting NA's approach to Oxo today, playing him on the left and then in the hole. I don't agree. No other way we could've gone except for starting N'Guessan but that's a big ask in his debut to play against Man Utd... Out of the cup, but really positive about the league now. COYR! I thought NA got it tactically bang on in the first half, Chambo was drifting into the middle and causing them problems. Morgan sitting a little deeper just ticking it over, worked really well and thats why we were on top for so long.
RedWillie Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Well done boys, good effort and gifted them the second goal to. Chaplow MOTM for me. What a set of mongs the manure fans were....winning 2-1 and then arguing with eachother about standing up on the hatchings with the disabled fans in wheel chairs. One of them was going to chin one but he didn't have any legs to stand up on !! Mind you the stewards were very accomodating today. Draw a line under this as NA says and go on for promotion from this poxy league.

geoffd Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Good Evening, I am not in the habit of posting, but I am a fan of over 40 years ( 1st game Saints 9 Wolves 3) I would like to say that I looked at this tie with some trepedation fearing an embarrassing score on national TV. I am very proud having watched the game that despite the result we can all walk away with our heads held high and confident of our future. Well done to all at SFC and all the supporters. Causer Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Superb effort from the players, battled hard for 60 mins before tiring. Morgan and Chaplow were brilliant as was Butterfield who dealt well with the cheat Nani. The ref was hopeless, never a free kick in the build up to the first goal and gave many very harsh free kicks against us. Now for Promotion. LostBoys Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Good performance but missed chances and two mistakes means with prepiership teams against you - you dont win. The whole of the defence and midfield were superb (whoever was having a pop at chamberlain need their head testing. Front three worked hard but unfortunately I thought that Guly's final ball let us down too often. Don't think gobern was on the pitch long enough to be crap, although dickson managed it. To quote Souness & Allardyce, WE played manure off the park in the first half, PLAYING FOOTBALL. Sad that Dickson made the mistake that led to their winner, but if ANY idiot thinks that our performance will detract from the League - sorry, bollix, we just gave SAF an almighty scare. Like others have said, VERY proud of our boys tonight, for an hour WE looked like a PL team. Sheaf Saint Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 The referee might as well have had a Man Yoo shirt on. Every time a Saints player so much as made the slightest bit of contact with one of theirs he gave them a free kick for it (one particularly stupid one lead indirectly to their first goal) and gave us absolutely nothing. There was a point in the second half when Guly was cynically shoved in the back when running through their defense and if it had been the other way he probably would have got a card out but he didn't even blow for the foul. Shocking stuff. On a positive note though, I thought we were the better team for the first 60 minutes but maybe ran out of steam a bit and when you've got a player like Giggs on the bench who can single-handedly change a game then you've always got a great chance of getting back into it. While I was hoping we might get an equaliser towards the end, I'm actually quite glad that it didn't go to a replay so overall it's probably the best result we could have hoped for. Showed a worldwide audience that we can mix it with the best team in England (although they did rest a few of their star players) and now free to concentrate on the all-important goal of promotion. Well done lads. proud of you all.

St Marco Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Very proud to be a Saints fan after that. Showed the world we are coming back from oblivion. The players gave it everything. The two benches are what made the difference. United brought on experienced quality while we brought on the unknown. And ultimatly that cost us. Which is a shame. But we have nothing to complain about, the supporters and the team made it a great day to remember! Now we have the league to concentrate on. If the lads play like that we have nothing to fear. My only worry is we need a fast paced striker. Rickie and Barney had to come back from the front to get the ball most the time. If we had a pacey striker we could of brought on it would of saved our legs a bit more.

Our passing game is good to watch and its the way I like to see football played, but as we have seen over teh last couple of years we always do better when playing the better sides - because we are up against sides that try and play that way too - we still strugle against sides that either park a bus or get in our faces and play with a very direct approach - and thats clear from our 'blips' this season - its also why its so hard to get out of this division even if the qaulity of play and players is second to none, being able to grind out results against sides with a more negative approach is key and we still struggle a little in that department - That said, I am confident we will go up, but it will be down to the wire if you ask me - so nervouse nail biting time ahead - but great performance today and Chaplow was immense, harding and butterfield also great... the team should be proud tonight. SaintBobby Posted 29 January, 2011 Share Posted 29 January, 2011 Very very good effort. Especially for first sixty minutes. We did tire a little and didn't have a ton of options on the bench. A little annoying to lose to two quite soft goals too. Btw, Adam Lallana came into the Channon suite afterwards and said he expected to be playing again (and indeed fully fit) in 2 weeks. He'd met a specialist a few days ago and the injury is less bad than expected. He was also full of praise for the team's effort but said he thought Exeter and Peterborough were actually bigger games in terms of our overall objectives. Well done, Saints. Brave effort. MOTM: Schneiderlin. With honourable mentions for Chaplow, Harding and Butterfield. The handful of Manc fans in corporate seemed to think Guly was our most threatening player.
