Saints 1 Man Utd 2 - Post Match Reaction

Bonuses - not risked Hammond or Lalanna, no cards and no injuries!

I thought second half we were second best - but for all that United were pretty tame going forward.

Onwards to Exeter - Cherries (silly name) only managed a draw today...still 4th!

Promotion always No.1 priority - but a nice day at SMS against the Champions elect...still it would have been nice to win!

They won 2-1 at Plymouth !

I had to watch this on the telly after putting my back out (my dad was quite happy to take my ticket though:rolleyes:)

Thought we did ourselves proud really. Big complement that sir Alex felt the need to bring on the likes of Giggs and Nana of the bench. The players gave it their all what more can we ask for. Chaplow really was a bargain for 50K.

Also goes to show why Harding is the dogs b ollocks and Dickson is well............

Had to feel for Butterfield as well he just doesn't have the legs to deal with PL pace still he gave it his best.

A great effort from Saints but now back to the bread and butter of league 1 (so glad it did not go to a replay). Oh and ITV's coverage of the FA Cup was abysmal, Bring back the BBC!!!

I thought Harding, Chaplow and Butterfield had moster games. Great performance from the whole team though!

It was good to hear WGS mumble away, but you're right ITV coverage is carp.

Chappers and Schneiderlin were absolute class. Really class. For as long as they play for Southampton I will never utter a bad word about either of them ever again.

Agree with the above. Plus....

Outplayed them in the first half.

Best goal of the game was from Chappers. Both of theirs came from our mistakes.

Very proud of the players and NA.

Would have loved to see us beat United but not overly upset to be out of the cup. And if we had to go out this was the best way to do so.

Looking forward to us getting 3 points on Tuesday.

Perfect result really (no embarrasment) ,outplayed United for most of the game ,rested some players, gave the new guy a run out,can concentrate on league and even used the game to experiment with new formation. On top of which 2 of our rivals are still in the cup which should be a help to us.

Yep. Feel the same. Game was there for the taking IMO. Why bring on Dickson for Barnard?

To switch to an orthodox 4-4-2 with Dickson at left back, guly and Lambert up front, and Harding left wing. It didn't work out. Had Lallana been available, this may have worked.

Butterfield MOM in my opinion.

Excellent performance - matched them, if not more, for a good part of the game. Their subs made a huge difference, as you'd expect. But it was great to see us going head to head with the Premier League leaders and only just being edged out. Now for the league!

I have to agree, the last time I watched Saints was against Man U was 2009, we have come a long way since then, I watched the game with a Man U fan who actually comes from Manchester and he was full of praise in the way we played. I also thought Sir Alex gave us the right amount of respect as well, although felt he had to step it up in the second half as I am sure he would not want a replay either.

And thats the best you can post after that game .. wow life must be "crap"

To be fair he is totally right. How about a balanced view, we did very well today - especially in defence & midfield - lambo & Barnard a little too quiet but worked hard.

That ref was a ****, he obviously knows all their players - one of our lads would fart and he would blow.

Onto the league - enjoyed the game

Best way to tell how well we played was that their fans were very quiet until they scored the first half we completely dominated and first 15 mins of second half but a combination of good subs by Fergie and a few sloppy square balls by saints and momentum shifted

Still great game and Saints team and fans did the club proud

Well proud! Excellent performance. made the ManU fan sitting next to me at the pub in Vegas squirm. Despite the loss, a good day to be a Saints fan, and although it would have been great to move on in the cup, I am also kind of glad that we don't have that distraction anymore and can concentrate on promotion. Nice one lads, you gave me some old fashioned goose bumps today.

An excellent performance with lots of width, passing and moving off the ball. A real team performance.

I still thought we still had a great chance even when United equalized because they had no subs left, but we couldn't get a second goal.

I'm very pro-Adkins but I think withdrawing Chaplow and inserting Dickson surrendered the initiative, and we never looked like winning it after that.

Atkinson was pitiful - acting like a sad little groupie out there.

Just got home. I must say that I was proud of the lads today. Any neutral observer who didn't know which division we were in would have said that we were the better team for about 75% of the match. The glory-hunting plastics would have said that they didn't play their biggest stars, but I would counter by saying that had Lallana played, we would have beaten that team that they played today.

The usual indications of the sort of fans that they attract were there for all to see, walking to the match along Britannia Road to see that one coach came from Milton Keynes, another from Redditch, both well known suburbs of Manchester. Undoubtedly several others had made their journeys from those other Northern Cotton towns of Margate, Taunton and Yeovil.

Also as usual, the referee was a closet United fan, as our players only had to touch their players for him to award them a free kick. And of course they had their usual dago cheating bar -steward, Nani having taken over the role from Ronaldo. But of course, the referee wouldn't have dared to have given him a card for his blatant dive in our box, lest he angered Ferguson.

Our man of the match was Chaplow by some distance, although most of our players put in a very good shift. Chaplow, Barnard and Do Prado had all been influential in our dominance in the first hour and when they were all substituted, it was clear that it was over as a competition and that we had decided that the match against Exeter was more important than the remaining time in the Cup. We had done ourselves proud, proved that we are capable of competing even at the top level and now we must concentrate on getting back up to the Premiership. On the form we showed today, we would have given most teams up there a run for their money.

The support from the fans was also magnificent today. I'm sure that most of their plastics must have been nervous about getting the victory, as they were quiet for large spells of the match. The time will come again that will beat them, I'm sure of that. In the meantime, I truly hope that somebody knocks them out of the Cup like West Ham did in the Carling.

I dont think i've ever felt so happy after a Saints defeat. We were excellent and i'm so proud of the lads.We deserve to go up now and even if we end up in the play offs we know we can win them.Harding for me was man of the match.

Just got in very good all round team performance 90% of the game it was hard to tell that we are two leagues below them, we could have had a couple more before they scored but hey ho the league has always been the important thing. I am very proud of that performance but we did get a little sloppy mid way through the second half Fergie paid us the compliment of having some big guns on the bench. Talking of Fergie, he must have had a word with that ref at half time because he gave us feck all in the second half and also the physio only came on once.

This...spot on.

NA - tactical genius. Didn't want a draw - sent on Dickson to make sure we didn't get a replay. Brilliant.

Proud of the Saints tonight.

Really enjoyed that, I never understood the ''well get thrashed comments'' - we were always going to give them a game, we're a very good team now. The first half was pretty comfortable for us, we were aided by Man Utd not really turning up, but we turned the screw on them and our midfield ran the show I felt.

Morgan was just sublime in the first half, overshadowed their midfield on his own, the boy is a classy classy player. I was amazed by how much time they gave us and space to turn, Lallana would have had fun today and it's a bloody shame we couldn't see him out there.

The second half we tired, as I felt we would, as they upped their game. They were always going to have a ''moment'' in the game but it's just a shame that their winner came through a mistake from us, but it's pointless dwelling on that.

It was a good advertisement for us as a club, I thought we produced some lovely football at times and we matched them with their passing in the first half, even bettered at times.

Best outcome really. No injuries, no suspensions, not thrashed and no replay - so a very good day all in all and a nice boost for everyone connected to the club. Let's hope this is the start of putting Southampton back on the footballing map.

Does it matter where their fans come from they are a great club with a great tradition of winning.

We played really well for long periods but they had class players up front we had Lambert and Barnard who tried had but had no pace

After that you still find a couple of moans and a FFS. You utter, utter *****.

You really need help if you thought I was having a go with my post. I was giving a balanced opinion of what happened. I was also saying that the performance made me proud.

Go away and sort yourself out.

Another very proud Saints fan here. When Chappers put that first in, I never jumped so high. Great moment. Like others have said, it was a compliment to our team that Fergie had to bring on some big guns to see us off. Only downside to the game was the sloppy defending on the second goal. But hey-ho not to worry. Three points on Tuesday is more important!

A good performance but it was our own downfall. Utd weren't quality, it was our mistakes which led to both goals, which is disappointing. Even more so for the second, from Dickson who had only just come on.

Chaplow was Motm, however I thought Chamberlain was awful. Clearly he's affected by the transfer talk, he bottled challenges which on other days, he would have won and been clear through. Either you want to be here, or you don't.

That was a truly great team performance. The performance today of the likes of Harding, Chaplow, Schneiderlin and Butterfield should be really worrying a few Championship teams right now, this team could do great things in that league right now.

Yes I agree but I now think we do need a new set of strikers if we are to perform well in the Championship

I think what we lack up front is a bit of pace. Lambo and Barnard will still cause problems for most champ teams...but just a little pace to help in behind wouldn't go a-miss.
