saint_stevo Posted 28 January, 2011 Share Posted 28 January, 2011 Hi All, Gran coming out of hospital shortly and isn't going to be able to walk for any decent length of time......we want to be able to take her out etc so she isn't stuck inside. Any idea where we might get a wheelchair for 6-12 months from? Looking at about £90 on ebay which isn't an option Thanks Stevo

bridge too far Posted 28 January, 2011 Share Posted 28 January, 2011 Your local Red Cross should be able to help. I used to get one from them when my mum came to stay with me.
Whitey Grandad Posted 28 January, 2011 Share Posted 28 January, 2011 Have you tried social services or Age Concern? I think there are several organisations who will lend you one for a while. http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Health-and-social-care/Social-support-in-the-UK/Medical-equipment
saint_stevo Posted 28 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 28 January, 2011 haven't tried anything. Only found out tonight we would need one. Thanks for the info
LGTL Posted 28 January, 2011 Share Posted 28 January, 2011 You definately won't need to pay for one. Charities should provide one free of charge, your local hospital may even be able to help.

You might though want to consider leasing a lightweight easy fold one as it's just temporary, a place in Shirley does them iirc: http://careandmobilitycentre.co.uk/apage/3651.php The scooter hire service might be an option to consider also, dependent on your Nan's wishes for independence etc. I have used one myself as well as manual chaors and tbh I personally would want one of each, power for speed and independence but a manual (self-propelled) for wheelies and comfort. Much easier to put in a car and stash under the stairs when not needed.

benjii Posted 28 January, 2011 Share Posted 28 January, 2011 If you get an electric one beware that the battery will be highly sought after should Robot Wars ever, god forbid, be recommissioned.

Charities should provide one free of charge, your local hospital may even be able to help. Our local Red Cross asks for a token payment (£6 IIRC). Fair enough, because I would hope they'd clean them after each use.

dune Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 The red cross. They can also sort her out with things like a walking frame, frame for the toilet, even a bath lift.
