david in sweden Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 (edited) I am really sick of the media love-affair with Man.Utd. Headlines everywhere - poor Sir Alex... will be without fullback Rafael - concussed v. Blackpool - last night. Can't play in the cup tie at ...L1 Southampton - AND ????..there'll just have to rely on the ref. giving them a soft penalty again -I suppose. It almost sounds as though they are preparing an excuse - if we pull off a shock win again. I can hear it now "the defence was unbalanced without their star defender- (*ull shi*) say I" This game, though exciting gets in the way of our promotion push and part of me wants to get it out of the way - but at the same time it makes my blood boil when there is so little given over to us having two midfielders out and another who doesn't want to be here - so much for media equality. NorthamSteve Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 If it means so little to you, why post it?
Barry the Badger Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Of course they're going to get more media reporting.
Lets B Avenue Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 It should mean that we get to hurl abuse at Gary Neville. Twice this season he should have been sent off, but for the usual benevolent ref. Hopefully our new and pacy left winger will have a field day against him.
Saint Charlie Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Neville might play, get OXO and/or N'Guessan running at him, his legs are gone.
Thedelldays Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 to the OP..man u are probably one of the top 3 biggest clubs on the planet...well, I would say that is a fact..(along with barca and madrid)..\ when fergie sneezes it gets reported...
david in sweden Posted 26 January, 2011 Author Posted 26 January, 2011 Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Of course they're going to get more media reporting. of course, but if you read some of the other sites, it almost makes it sound like ...it's the difference between the two sides. For us, it's a head-heart question, in reality ...their reserve side should be good enough to wipe us out. What's ONE injury?
Barry the Badger Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 of course, but if you read some of the other sites, it almost makes it sound like ...it's the difference between the two sides. Really? Where?
david in sweden Posted 26 January, 2011 Author Posted 26 January, 2011 We'd have more chance if he'd played IMO. So rash in the tackle, he'd have given some decent free kicks away. If it's Neville though, put Chamberlain on him and hit the ball over the top of them for a race. God knows how Rafael didn't give away a penalty last night. Still, they got a tough game so hopefully a few will need a rest. All I want is to give them a scare and compete a bit. Overall I find it depressing that we're lightyears behind. They were always better of course, but the gap was small enough that we'd usually give them a very, very tough game at home. They HATED going to the dell and I loved that. wasn't there some stat. that pointed out that MU had conceded only THREE penalties in the last 10 years ? It takes a courageous ref. to give one AGAINST them, but they get awarded all manner of "soft" ones.

david in sweden Posted 26 January, 2011 Author Posted 26 January, 2011 Really? Where? try http://www.newsnow.co.uk sport league 1 southampton -it lists all the Saints related threads.
david in sweden Posted 26 January, 2011 Author Posted 26 January, 2011 you have to take into account that in most league games they spend more time in their opponents penalty area than their own.. Blackpool deserved one last night, but they were already leading 2-0 at the time ...what ref. would have awarded that...?
Thedelldays Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 (edited) Blackpool deserved one last night, but they were already leading 2-0 at the time ...what ref. would have awarded that...? see...I would disagree....they both collided IMO.... if saints concede a penalty just like that, I would be furious... Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Great opportunity for 1 of our players to really make a name for themselves on Saturday. By kicking Gary Neville as often and as hard as they can.
Barry the Badger Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 (edited) try http://www.newsnow.co.uk sport league 1 southampton -it lists all the Saints related threads. I don't want to do that and read through them all to find it. You said you had read sites that make it sound as though Rafael was the difference between the two sides, I'm asking where you've seen that as I'm interested to read it. The9 Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Well, it beats posting "we never get a mention in media coverage"... Is it Idiot Week on here or something ?
david in sweden Posted 27 January, 2011 Author Posted 27 January, 2011 (edited) I don't want to do that and read through them all to find it. You said you had read sites that make it sound as though Rafael was the difference between the two sides, I'm asking where you've seen that as I'm interested to read it. OK so don't read them, but I did and the initial BBC release quoted Alex Ferguson as saying " He has concussion and will miss Saturday's game" later BBC site cites Rafael as " a key member of (United's) defence ". Ian Holloway was satisfied to give his reserves a run-out, but Ferguson was obviously contemplating playing Rafael in a strong side(?) In the event of a "shock result" ( Saints winning)..can't you see the headlines would be along the lines of " ..MU were without their key defender Rafael "...blah, blah. I hardly see how the injury of ONE United defender can create so much print, surely they have enough " talent " to beat us twice over....As we don't not have the strength in depth that MU have ..their is little mention of us already missing Lallana, Hammond and Puncheon " not wishing to compete " so that we have to use a loan-player to be on the bench..or even be in the start 11. I can only imagine that the other sites that followed with their own version may have built-up the story to a crescendo. Edited 27 January, 2011 by david in sweden

Right, well if you read this and think that they are saying Rafael is the difference between the two sides then you are obviously on a different planet to me. I don't think I've ever known anybody to get so worked up about a factual news report. I think you are being ridiculously over-sensitive. BBC reports that Rafael, who plays for the biggest club in the country, suffered a concussion and will miss this weekends game. They also state that he is a key member of their squad, which is true. The b*stards. How dare they. Edited 27 January, 2011 by Barry the Badger
This Charming Man Posted 27 January, 2011 Posted 27 January, 2011 I am really sick of the media love-affair with Man.Utd. Are you for real? Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest. Every little thing that happens there is going to be reported as it will be of interest to their enormous worldwide support. We are a small club playing in the 3rd divison who little to no one outside of Hampshire cares about. It would be a bit like the media totally ignoring the Tories so they can report a bit more on the Green Party. I really do despair of our cluesless, deluded fans.
stu0x Posted 27 January, 2011 Posted 27 January, 2011 wasn't there some stat. that pointed out that MU had conceded only THREE penalties in the last 10 years ? It takes a courageous ref. to give one AGAINST them, but they get awarded all manner of "soft" ones. If you substitute the word '********' for the word 'stat', then sure Penalties conceded 98/99 - 08/09 (Premier League only) 1. Manchester United: 18 (8 home, 10 away) % at home: 44,4 2. Arsenal: 23 (8 home, 15 away) home %: 34,8 3. Chelsea: 29 (8 home, 21 away) home %: 27,6 4. Liverpool: 32 (11 home, 21 away) home %: 34,4 Surprisingly enough, the table for penalties exactly mirrors the table for results. It's almost as if the teams that win the most games (and therefore spend the least amount of time in their own penalty area and most in the opposition's) proportionately concede/are awarded the least/most penalties... It amazes me how many people believe such ludicrous myths in football when they can be clearly and irrefutably debunked in seconds.
david in sweden Posted 27 January, 2011 Author Posted 27 January, 2011 Right, well if you read this and think that they are saying Rafael is the difference between the two sides then you are obviously on a different planet to me. It's pretty clear that I didn't put my thoughts down as as clearly as ...My meaning was (in the event of us beating them - Please god ) Ferguson would be stuck for a reasonable explanation as to why except that Rafael etc, etc , Anexcuse I would put in the same category as the one about losing because of their grey shirts ! - I don't think I've ever known anybody to get so worked up about a factual news report. I think you are being ridiculously over-sensitive. Now you can class me as a stupid old (whatever you like) because I've been a fan for over 50 years, and I have reached the point where I'm really totally pi**ed with the Man Utd media wagon. BBC reports that Rafael, who plays for the biggest club in the country, suffered a concussion and will miss this weekends game. They also state that he is a key member of their squad, which is true. Yes they are, and yes he did , and yes he will..and he is. In the event of us beating them...it can hardly be important if they are down one man - can it! but I bet you'd you'll hear it as an excuse The b*stards. How dare they. Agree totally. MY predictions ..if we don't win, their victory will be - by a dubious penalty. End of my rant of the week. What a good job Turkish and Alpine stayed clear of this one.
