Saint in Paradise Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Don't know anything about something called Facebook BUT I had an e-mail which said :- Between today and tomorrow, the New FB Privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" goes into effect. The new setting shares your data with non-FB sites & it is automatically set to "Enabled".Go to Account>Privacy Settings>Apps & Websites>Instant Personalization>edit settings & uncheck "Enable". BTW If your friends don't do this, they will be sharing info about you as well. How true or what it means I leave for you to decide. .
dubai_phil Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Interesting. When you go into all the privacy settings there are a whole heap of them that allow your personal information to be shared with people web sites or searches other than your actual friends. I like this one FB When real world friends look for you using a search engine, this setting makes it possible for them to see a preview of your Facebook profile (containing only info that's available to everyone). If you continue, friends may not know if it's really you. WHEN real world friends look for you - but it means that Non-Real World friends can look for you, ie data mining people. FB nice idea but full of dangers when you type a comment for a mate or has one typed by a mate that is inappropriate (as Oxo found out)
Weston Super Saint Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 It's facebook. If you've put information on there that is sensitive and you want to keep private, then that's your own fault. If you've put your bank details on there, can you let me know so I can get to all your money first! What else do you really put on there? Your name? probably; your address? doubt it unless you like stalkers; your phone number? lol at you if you did!; your email address? if it gets too much spam, get a new one - you did use a second one for receiving spam didn't you, and not your real one? People moaning about facebook and privacy really are some of the most stupid people on the planet. It's a site that shows off your information to the world. You decide what information to put on it, therefore you decide what the world sees. If you put anything private or sensitive on there, I guess you only have yourself to blame. Whitey Grandad Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Never reply to any unsolicited emails. If you do, they will know that yours is a valid one and may use it for nefarious purposes.
Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Facebook are constantly pulling sh*t like this, trying to find new ways to sell off your details.

Sevvy Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Face book also has an inbuilt gps like system which will show to any body else where you are exactly unless you go through the trouble of turning it off,not good if you are using it in Afghanistan, thats why the MOD have issue guidence to their staff on how to turn it off,
The9 Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 Basically, anything anyone posts as a status about changing your settings due to a change in a Facebook policy is a load of cobblers. That particular message up there has been doing the rounds for about 18 months, and wasn't even accurate when they DID make a change to personal settings at that time. If you want to know, check here : http://www.facebook.com/help/?safety or here : http://www.facebook.com/privacy/explanation.php Trouble is, people are idiots and just believe the worst or gossip from others, even though it's completely against FB's interests to leave security loops or have people scared of using their security settings properly. You agree to share information with FB ad infinitum whether you delete your account or not when you first sign up, and you're going to get automatically targeted adverts no matter what you try to turn off. Hatch Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 FB are also going to start charging soon. Also, if you have kids, the pervs can kidnap them through your profile. And they can also find out if you are at home, then they come round and rob you. or is that Google Street View? Just be careful.

Saint in Paradise Posted 26 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 26 January, 2011 As I said in my original post I have nothing whatsoever to do with FB, I only posted something that was sent to me. I also said it was up to you whether you believed it or not. I therefore apologise for trying to be helpful about a subject that I understand a few people use. Don't listen to the others saint in paradise! I urge you that next time you hear of something that you have idea about, then please share this information with everyone on the internet. Personally, I'm sick of listening to people who know what they're talking about and it quite refreshing to get a different point of view. Don't let the naysayers get you down - you just keep on posting your helpful posts.
chrisobee Posted 27 January, 2011 Share Posted 27 January, 2011 The OP is absolutely spot on except for some, including myself, this "Instant Personalisation" is not yet available. However, the default setting is "enabled" which is absurd. Those I know who have found "IP" in place have, not surprisingly, uncheched the enabled box. I would agree with Deppo for the first time ever except as everyone knows he knows only how to post sarcastic remarks, I thought you were banned young man to be honest

I wasn't able to try again until just now and that option has gone! You now have to go into the Apps and Websites bit in the bottom LH corner of the Privacy page instead.
