Richard Keys and Andy Gray

Lads banter. I expect pubs across Wolverhampton were full people having the same discussion about whether there should be a female linesman that night. Stop getting so hysterical about it. It looks like they lost their jobs because it suited Sky.

Agree with that..

It was privately said although initially became public due to a "live mike" and whipped up by those with another agenda.

Gray and Keys might have been idiots but it has all got out of hand !

Had I wanted to get the bullet this morning, I would have told you my favourite sexist joke.

Oh, it’s a belter. You’ll find it on a Doug Stanhope DVD called Word Of Mouth. It’s got the lot. A sexual act and two polarised views of it, first female, then male. Nobody comes out with much credit and the punchline’s a killer.

But I need the money, so I’ll let you look it up on the internet. Enjoy.

The point is, we have to leave a little space in the day for us be the cheap, despicable folk we can all sometimes be; for all those cruel thoughts and jokes and private moments in which the worst is said, we laugh or we don’t, and then move on.

As far as Andy Gray or Richard Keys go, this is not the case for the defence. Not a single line from Sky’s secret tapes has made me smile, and humour is integral here.

We’ll forgive a lot if there’s a chuckle at the end of it. Sexism, even racism sometimes. I loathe the British National Party, but I did see Bernard Manning live, twice.

To be an equal opportunity offender is the key. South Park rips into all religions, and even drew Mohammed to prove it, and at least Frankie Boyle is not angling to present a tea-time magazine show, like half of the comedians on television.

There is a part of most of us that finds humour in the sick jokes that always come in the wake of tragedy, and we are all guilty of that inappropriate laughter at some time.

More importantly, we must guarantee the freedom to do it, because otherwise contemplating the horrors of human existence would send us mad.

Sexism is wrong, but to those who would pursue this matter until there is not a reel of off-air chatter that has not been inspected for incorrect attitudes, I would suggest taking a short look at the world around you, and winding your neck in.

Its stromngly rumoured that those in charge of sky are considering having a panel of woman plaudits covering skysports soccer

one option being considered is that one week it will be 4 men and jeff Sterling and the following week four women and a female anchor woman

Another proposal is that they may go for an easier option of two woman and two men on the panel .

Its reproted that sky are serioulsy considering these options but no deciscion has been made.

This has come from a sky employee

Problem is this all seems to be getting mixed up and the real issues are getting lost amongst the 'we've lost our freedom to have a laugh' cries of those that dont get it....

THERE is feck all wrong with having a laugh - and despite my dislike for Martin Samual and the rag he writes for... he actually on this occaision makes that point really well. We all enjoy it even at work, the banter with female colleague -lets be honest that often includes outright flirting - is part of what makes work bareable! Even the lads getting together and 'discussing' the ladies relative merits goes on and is part of what blokes do - not always proud of it, but I cant pretend I dont do it..... BUT the real issues at stake are actually quite simple.

1. These things need to be done with people who are happy and equally engaged with it - IT IS OUT OF ORDER, NO EXCUSES if actions make colleagues, male, female, gay, black feel UNCOMFORTABLE in any way at best and at worst OFFENDED. That is why the laws exist and that is why they should. I t is NOT for us to judge what someone should find acceptable banter or if they should or should not be offended by something we say or do - Because everyone will have a different comfort zone and its OUR responsiblity not to stray into that teritory. If we do, we should rightly be disciplined for it as it is a case or harrassment (look up the true definition if you disagree) and/or bullying - and NO its not acceptable for women to do it either, but the truth is that the 'jokes about men' which lets face it are usually sexual or question our abilities are simply in most cases less threatening to us blokes, so we tend not be as often offended nor does it make us feel uncomfortable as often... that is a sweping generalisation, but it does tend to explain why blokes sometimes 'struggle to understand why women are often offended or made uncomfortable by what we think is just bloke banter' - we need to recognse that we cant judge anyone else male or female, by waht we personally find offensive or not.

2. This whole banter issue is to some extent seperate form the comments they made about the ability of women to be professional referees or take on any roles for that matter - that is simple old school sexism and is perhaps teh bigger issue- these attitudes need to change - simple as that - and its time those that disagree wake up and realise what century we live in

Sure there may have been 'dark forces' wanting thsoe two out - but they provided tehir employer with teh perfect excuse - they looked like pratts with their blokeish banter (maybe we should look at that and think how sad and juvenile we can all be... made me think what a arse I must sound like at times - 'only at times?' ho ho ho), but the worst was the questioning of the refs assistant and how they made the female presenter feel uncomfortable...

All teh guff about 'recorded or not' is irrelevent - and just adds extra ammo for how stupid they must be

For those saying it was just banter and people are overreacting would you consider it just banter if the situation was changed such that the linesman was male but coloured and Keys and Gray had been caught saying he did not know the offside rule because of the colour of his skin?

James Richardson, top of a few fans' wishlist for the job, was goaded into providing a view on the matter during this week's Football Weekly Extra podcast, released yesterday. He said "alleged" a lot in relation to the rumour mill, but had a lot of praise for Andy Keys' skills as a presenter. "Top-notch" and "big shoes to fill", etc. Does make you wonder who Sky can get in to replace him.

There's a bit of a preview of Saints v Man Utd too, so it's well worth a listen.

That would not happen, the issue is quite clear - women aint got a ****ing clue about football and they know it, as does Sian Massey, evidenced by her stepping down from her last game and her next. This is clear admission of not knowing the offside rule, so I think she best come out and call for Grays return to the big time, unfortunately for Keys its too late, hes already resigned.

She will have to live with the fact her *****y little **** stirring antics has cost a MAN his job.

Why didnt she come clean before? is SHE the one who is sexist? Why is she cancelling games bringing the football authorities into disrepute and causing national embarressment?

I suspect it all comes down to the classic - imbalanced hormones, and feeling a bit bloated whilst the painters were in...

or was it morning sickness? Has she been smashing it with Redknapp?

'dont worry Sain love. Its ok to know **** all about football.... To be honest, I dont know the first thing about ironing.'

'If a woman leaves the kitchen before dinner is served, is she offside? Yes, unless there are at least two domestic appliances between her and the table'

But also adding humour back into the situation, I received this one by email today I have of course informed the sender that I am deeply offended and taken action to have him fired as it came from a work email address.

spot on and and listening to gray and keys their banter about the women linesman was not delivered with humour but real venom .

glad to see the back of these relics fro the past.

Congratulations, as well as being incredibly bigoted, you're also impressively ill-informed. Lump them all together, let's just call you stupid and be done with it. Seems much easier.

I am intrigued as to how you've come to the conclusion that SHE got Keys and Gray fired (and I know Keys officially resigned, but let's face it, he jumped before he was pushed), considering it was somebody WITHIN SKY who leaked the recordings, and she has not given a single public comment on the issue and has tried to remain out of the spotlight as much as possible - how match officials should be. She decided to make herself unavailable for two games (one where she was due to run the line, in League Two, the other where she was due to referee in the Blue Square North) because, in my opinion (an opinion Mike Riley, head of the referees organisation, shares), she realises football should be about the players, not the officials, so to avoid a media storm, she decided it was best to try to let things die down a bit before returning.

Dunno if you've noticed (you almost certainly haven't, considering you probably think that a woman shouldn't have a job unless it's cooking your ****ing dinner), but officiating at the highest level is actually a job for which she will be (reasonably well) paid. As a result of the storm created solely by Keys and Gray, she will be losing out on that income.

Why didnt she come clean before? is SHE the one who is sexist? Why is she cancelling games bringing the football authorities into disrepute and causing national embarressment?

I can only now assume you're on some sort of bizarre windup to see how many people can get angry and report your threads. You're up to 5 on this one, so keep going, be my guest.

Not at all... after all, the description of this part of the forum is: "General discussion area for all non saints related topics to be discussed sensibly. Infractions will be issued to those abusing this forum". Now, where's that infraction button...

Who wrote this? It's a very sensible and well written piece, not your standard footballer.

Agreed. It makes you wonder what a pundit like Alan Shearer is up to. In being so blandly uninformative and lacking in analysis, is he upholding the secret oath of a kind of football magic circle, to curry favour with his erstwhile mates, or is he just dull?

Agreed.

Football coverage, by and large, is uninformative and turgid.

I actually think it's something of a scandal that the likes of Shearer, Keown, Dixon, Bright draw licence fee payer's money when by any sensible assessment criteria they are utterly ****e at their jobs.

the pre/post match interviews are utterly pointless....

the same boring leading questions with the same boring sound bite responses...

people will moan about this..that managers dont tell them anything or let much on..or say they "never saw it"...

yet when one comes along and speaks his mind (holloway, warnock) that are hated for having an opinion

If lovejoy was still at soccer am I swear he'd have made a joke about female officials. But then not in the same unfunny or serious way as the other two.

But that's rather the point. No one is seriously claiming that anything is off-limits to actual humour, or even failed attempts at it. What Gray in particular (as well as the un-sacked reporter) displayed was seething contempt directed at women in football.
