Tbf when I saw it on MOTD I went "Oh ffs, this is why we shouldn't have female officials!" and then saw the replay and she got the decision completely correct (I will point out that I find sexism completely abhorrent, but it's something about the offside rule!). You're going to get this kind of sexism when you introduce women into football officiating anyway, not only are refs and lines(wo)men not exactly well-liked by fans it's not what we're used to at a footy game. I bet there will be women officiating in the Brazil World Cup.

Im not sure they know the off side rule either

Gray definitely doesn't, he continues to bang on about "daylight" between the defender and the attacker, when that was removed from the rules at least two years ago

I'd be delighted to see the back of the pair of them, half-decent presenters who actually know what they're talking about and don't ask dumb questions just to get a layman's response are ten-a-penny - most of the SSN presenters would do a better job than Keys. Granted, it's harder to find decent pundits, but Sky do have a few on their books among the utter dross. Le Tiss, Alan McInally, Dion Dublin... all decent enough, but they only ever get the chance when one of their former teams are being shown, while the rest of the time we have to listen to Jamie Redknapp literally not knowing his arsehole from his elbow.

If they come down on this this hard, then they have to crack down on all the other abuse that referees get. Literally, it is just football banter, people pick out something, anything and then start joking about it. It's part of the game. Then again, it is strange how discrimination like racism is not acceptable but discrimination like sexism is considered to be fine when really they are the same thing.

Edit: Just incase someone thinks from this post I am advocating racist abuse, I am not.

If I could be sure exactly what you are trying to say then I'd probably agree :?

Essentially all types of discrimination are totally unacceptable and my first thoughts when I heard about this was how it compared to the infamous comments made by Ron Atkinson. It was easy to realise these comments were equally bad, regardless of how good or bad Key and Gray are they should go. They are actually, as most I believe would agree, pretty dire.

However, I'm not sure that this could be described as banter, just puerile, sexist nonsense and I don't see the connection with the abuse referees suffer generally aside from that is equally unacceptable.

It's not banter though, is it? Any more than Big Ron's racism was banter. Neither was it joking as far as I can see. To call it banter is to give it undeserved immunity from criticism. Racism and sexism are governed under the same laws in society. The fact that one is considered more acceptable is entirely the problem here.

The tone in their voices showed that they were both entirely serious, IMO.

To clarify my points.

- All discrimination is wrong, yet sexism seems to be considered as an acceptable form of discrimination(which it isn't).

- It happens a LOT at football grounds. I bet there was tonnes of similar abuse from the crowds during the game.

- Yet nothing seems to be done about it nearly all the time. If you are going to punish these two, you need to start punishing those who shout stuff at games, or is that ridiculous?

what was funny, is how they were slating the ref assistant about not flagging for offside for liverpool first goal...when in fact, she was spot on...

they are a tired act...just wish, gray, keys and tyler would all move on...

Not a massive fan of Tyler, but he does despise Gray so gets a thumbs-up from me for that

Yes, Andy and Richard - the pre-requisite for knowing the offside rule is the possession of a penis. I am glad someone was brave enough to point that out, and not just anyone. If a larger penis correlates with a better understanding of the offside rule, then we have the world's two foremost experts telling us like it is, particularly as they are two giant d*cks.

I'm having some great mileage with this winding up the missus. I've been giving it the "Is there no sphere left that is purely a man's domain?" since I got in from work.

What I will say is, if they're ticking off Gray and Keys, they need to remove that Boots advert that makes it sounds as if man flu is something which isn't serious.

Does he really? What's the story there? Vaguely remember rumours about that a few years ago but not sure exactly what went down. All I know is Tyler got taken off the big games at one point and was replaced by Ian Darke.

This! I was sat here praying that she made the right decision, as it would have set her back by her accessors. It was 100% right. Do they not know how much time and effort she would have had to put in to get to where she is? Also you have to be pretty **** hot and on top of your game, as it is not easy. Very easy to fall back the other way. She will go a long way as she has come this far in what is still a very male game!

At least Sky keep their colours nailed to the mast regarding faux-pas like this, they have come down hard on everyone on the front line who has been involved in bad press for Sky...................... That is with the exception of Chris Kamara who let Claire Tomlinson carry the can for a guest on Goals on Sunday who used a choice word, that she failed to apologise for: Mmmmmmmmmmm how does that work?

Why is she getting loads of congratulations for getting that decision right.

Getting things right is the very least we expect from the officials.

It's ok to aknowledge when an official gets a very difficult call correct. I would expect a lot of people would have thought that was offside on first viewing.

Just because they're officials and you expect them to get things right, you can still give credit where it's due.

Seeing as women (maybe except from VERY few exceptions) aren't and will not be good enough to ever make professional football a mixed sport, can't we just have female officials for the female game, and male officials for the male game? Shouldn't this keep everyone happy?

Unfortunately, because of the ridiculous scrutiny and abuse officials get at all levels of the game, there simply aren't enough men who want to do the job, hence why the FA has gone on a massive recruitment drive to get women involved in the mens game. I think there's now nearly 1000 female referees officiating in mens football.

Gray always has a pop at the officials though regardless of their gender! Even when he is wrong after looking at a replay a thousand times he still won't admit he is wrong. I think his punishment should be to be a ref for a game. Then he might understand how difficult it can be to get things right without the luxuary of a replay. What a clown.

Quite right. The female version of the professional game is a total load of ****e for a reason, no testosterone, no aggression, no desire... why do we want these negative influences into our game?

So throwing on some five foot piece of fluff is going to command respect? Players barely respect officials as it is, only the alpha male hardmen like Webb can command respect from the players.

I remember the female lino at west brom, getting spit roasted from home and away fans throughout, whether the decsision was right or not did not matter.

Seeing as all these blokes on this thread are jumping up and down for equality in our beautiful game, lets just take note of how many women can operate a remote control properly, or how **** it is going to a game with your wife/girlfriend/sister/granny rather than your mates.

Love it! this might become a sincere statement soon enough, with women undoing all of mans fine achievements in creating the modern world as we know it. its linos today, what will it be tomorrow?

I cant stand Gray (Keys is just his *****) , but they were only echoing the sentiments of (i bloody hope) the majority of football fans - who are men...

To be fair women have got too many other things going round in their heads to be able to concentrate on refereeing. It's like driving or the dreaded parallel parking - when you've got to think about what to cook for dinner, did I leave the emersion heater on, god i hate that pretty girl at work etc buzzing round your head even easy tasks become monumental challenges.

Wow. So much fail wrapped up in one post. :uhoh:

Referees do not command respect by being "alpha males". Look at Uriah Rennie, initially he got rave reviews as he was built like a brick ****house and wouldn't take any **** from the players, but the facade got seen through pretty quickly when it turned out he was actually getting most decisions wrong. Howard Webb is going the same way, if he was well-respected, would Ryan Babel have posted that Photoshopped picture with him in a Man United shirt?

Referees get respect from players by getting the big decisions right. Nothing more, nothing less. Take someone like David Elleray, he was an annoying ****, but he was generally right more often than not, and as a result was respected. Roger Milford on the other hand...

Ok then Mr high and ****ing mighty

A question to you then

Do you think a bunch of women officiating the game is a good thing?

the fact they are women should not even be a question...the question should be "are they good enough"

swap the word women for "black men" and we go back in time 30 years

Spot on.

It could be a giraffe running the line for all I care, as long as whoever gets the job is competent enough to get the majority of the decisions correct.

Indeed. Keys and Gray (and holepuncture it seems) made their minds up based purely on her sex.

And in answer to holepuncture: Yes, I do. The larger pool of people we have to choose top level officials from the better.
