Would you be feeling differently tonight if...

....we had just reached 4th place, 5 points off the top and a game in hand to take us into 2nd...on the back of 6 straight wins...?

Bearing in mind it's still January.

I would venture we'd be on cloud nine right now...

No because the goalkeeper's lack of judgement and nervousness is a big weakness at the back. He has been given too long and we need a change.

Agree Trousers, but unfortunately we are not!

I know - it's a hypothetical question. A bit like: "what if the lib dems get into power"...oops...

;-)

An alternative working title for this thread was: "It could be worse...we could be Sheffield Wednesday...lol"

ah good example there.

This is Wednesday who are splashing the cash and signing players from all over the league. It's not helping though.

So maybe buying isn't always the answer? ;)

Hard to say Trousers but the important thing not to lose sight of today is that Brighton also lost. The importance thing is not to lose ground on them, all that's happened is that it has bunched up again in and around us. We still have the game in hand so would/still be 2nd. Mind you P'Boro have one in hand on us and would/could be a point ahead.

Still 21 games to go so a long long time yet!!

The positive for me is that we're in a mini blip but still in a strong position.

We've had these blips before and then gone onto another strong run.

Sometimes you have to take one step back to take several steps forward (as they say in cliche land)

Still a long way to go and its all very tight for the top 6 places. Teams will slip up, teams will win games they don't expect to. We will be there come the end of the season, and if not, we will do it in the play offs. Keep the faith.

Meh, I said when I heard the FA Cup draw that we wouldn't win another game this month, so we're one Oldham thrashing ahead of schedule.

It's hardly a surprise.

I hear what you're saying and I probably agree.

That said I would also be thinking that now we're here we want to stay in this position and grind out results and points until the end of the season.

Lallana's injury, two poor games and an away weighted fixture list put me on about Cloud 3 at the moment.

Definately -

Games in last month:

5 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat, goals for 19, goals against 4.

If it had been LDWWWWW - we would be looking at CCC fixtures!

unfortunately its WWWWWDL - so form is going wrong way!

As Dune rightly said, it's not the results that are a concern it's the performances. What has caused such a change? Is it really Lallana? Has Puncheon coming back caused a big upset in squad unity and spirit - hence his omission from the squad today? Who knows, but Adkins needs to be careful todays result does not become a habit or we'll be waving auto goodbye before you can say "wheels off bus".

Or could it just be half the players are mentally 'saving themselves' for Man u next week? As great as the FA Cup is, i really hope we go out, but obviously with our heads held high.

You're going to end up being classed in the Dalek category if you're not careful.

but next week we could be out of the top six as weve a cup game and our games in hand our away and after todays performance there has to be concern.i still think we will be ok but it will go close as to wether we go up automatic

Not really last season my expectations were very low, this season I expected us to be in and around the top two all season that we haven't been is very poor IMO. We are arguably the biggest club in this division. We have resources other clubs down here would love to have even half of yet were in 4th with teams like Bournemouth and Brighton above us. Look at what Bournemouth are achieving on a team that cost a couple of quid and a pack of chewing gum, then tell me we are really doing that well.

It's a different situation because we don't have the same momentum. I agree it's not a disaster as all teams can drop points but the poor nature of the performance is a bit alarming. I mean, do we now also have to worry that Puncheon's head is not in the right place? He is a professional, right?

The real problem is I predicted a defeat and a draw for our last 2 games but got them round the wrong way. How f@@ked is that?

To be honest if I could pick a week to lose, I would of picked this one with Brighton losing & Hudders drawing a blank we haven't lost much ground at all. I'm sure we will be back to winning ways after the cup

To answer your question - obviously. I'm not one of the wrist-slitting brigade, but I still think this latest defeat just highlights our weakness over the last two seasons, namely our inability to cope when a team sets up 4-5-1 and gets in our faces from the start, and if we then go a goal down we are done for. The trouble is other teams are beginning to suss that if you give us time and space we are unbeatable, but go negative, niggly and tight and we will bottle it. Worrying
