Griffo Posted 24 January, 2011 Share Posted 24 January, 2011 Can't believe the amount of apathy being shown towards this game. It's a cup tie against Man Utd for crying out loud. The most exciting game of the season by far. It's on terrestrial TV, not just on the beeb but accross the world. The League is ALWAYS going to be our number 1 priority. Go up this year and promotion will be next years goal. Go up again and we're aiming to stay in the Premier League, get into Europe, win the Prem, conquere the universe etc. I for one hope we put out a ful strength side and give it our best shot. We probably wont win, but if we do we'll be telling our grandchildren about it. This. Obviously the league is important, but imagine if we got a win? Lighthouse Posted 24 January, 2011 Share Posted 24 January, 2011 Sorry to disappoint you, but ITV and ESPN have the FA Cup rights, not the BBC. The Saints vs Man Utd game is on ITV. Same difference, it's on Terrestrial TV. We'd have another game to play and another midweek game and further backlog? Seriously? If we beat Man Utd you'd be moaning about having a midweek League fixture to deal with? I just hope it goes as badly as that grim midweek trip up North we had after the Blackpool cup game. Hmm, doesn't sound like it worked then. With Punch being a knob and Lallana and Holmes injured, who else do we have to play at LM? Gobern can play there but not sure he'd do well against a top-quality Prem RB... FWIW, I still rate Harding. He's not been as good as he was last season but he still puts in a good shift and makes important tackles. Maybe Dickson's competition has made him nervous? SNSUN Posted 24 January, 2011 Share Posted 24 January, 2011 The only thing I'm hoping for is a spirited performance and perhaps a consolation goal or three. Hence why my prediction league prediction is 6-3 to United. Can't remember why I chose that score though... My biggest worry positionally is who partners Fonte at CB. Jaidi has the Premiership experience but is slow, Seaborne is the lower league player, and Martin the youngster. I get the feeling Adkins will play Jaidi but I'd give MArtin a bash, see how he fairs. CWD Posted 24 January, 2011 Share Posted 24 January, 2011 What a load of miserable bastards! Come on lads its the FA Cup, just imagine what it would do for the club if we won? More media coverage, attract better players, money, bigger gates at all remaining games. I would lose so much respect for NA if he put out a reserve team because it shows a lack of respect for the competition. FWIW I don't think he will because he understands that the FA Cup can still regain its former glory as the greatest cup competition in the world. The magic of the FA Cup is dying because of this attitude that it is a 'distraction'. No way is it! It's a change, a break from routine, a chance for our boys to go out and do us proud against far superior opposition. You all know that if we win you'll be on the post match thread celebrating! Who cares that it attracts so called 'plastic fans'? If more people are encouraged to come and be a Saints fan then good, I will welcome them. I am really looking forward to the game and hope the lads show what they can do. I believe in them, maybe some more of you should too.

John Boy Saint Posted 24 January, 2011 Share Posted 24 January, 2011 Haven't seen it elsewhere (probably speed reading too quickly if it was posted) ref for the game: 7 Southampton v Manchester United (5.15pm) Referee: Martin Atkinson Assistant Referees: S P Beck & M Mullarkey Fourth Official: K A Friend Record for this current season Games: 24 Yellow Cards: 85 Red Cards: 8 Seems that he is a pupil of the Sir Alex Ferguson school of added time when you read the little bit gleaned below, Criticisms After the 2009 Manchester derby at Old Trafford, Atkinson was criticised by Manchester City's then-manager Mark Hughes for bad time-keeping after Manchester United had scored an injury-time winner. The fourth official had signalled four minutes of additional time, but Michael Owen scored a 96th-minute goal, handing United a dramatic 4-3 win. Atkinson was defended by former referee Graham Poll, himself considered one of England's greatest officials, who pointed out that during injury time itself there had been a goal celebration, a substitution and a delay caused by a fan on the pitch. The incident led to City questioning the late appointment of Atkinson to the 2010 Manchester derby. In September 2009, Atkinson was handed a one-week demotion to the role of fourth official after a time-keeping dispute with Everton manager David Moyes. Everton had scored two injury-time goals to make the score 3-3 against Manchester United, but Atkinson then blew his final whistle while Everton were midway through an attack with a chance of a winner. At least its not Peter Walton.

NA knows what he has to do, for his job as much as anything. Yes, if we pull off a terrific win, and then progress to say the quarter finals before bowing out, it will be a great run and NA will be hugely popular with fans for many years for beating UTD. But his mission, laid down by the boss, is promotion. Nothing else counts to NC. Witness how much winning the JPT meant to him. So dont beat up NA if he chooses to mix the team up ahead of Tuesday's much more important game

ottery st mary Posted 25 January, 2011 Share Posted 25 January, 2011 Good to do our best and get a good result/performance.. Exeter is a must for three points please Saints. Their pitch is already very, very heavy and easily described as a pudding etc. They state it does not suit their own game...but like a lot of our opponents will want to bring the game right down to their own tempo and not ours.. No doubt it will be heavily watered to retain the pitch as a glue pot and in a similar state as last season.. There will be some very heavy legs on 1st Feb... I am really looking forward to the game and hope the lads show what they can do. I believe in them, maybe some more of you should too. This! I'm thoroughly looking forward to it - have seen an average of 8-10 games a season for the last 40-something years and have only ever seen Saints play Man Utd. once previously (at the Dell when we were both in the second division 1975?, Grand National day, Buchan/Macari?/Pearson? type era). No 6-3 or grey shirts or rolling-over-and-having-our-tummies-tickled for me. I've done the hard yards and the Lowe years - why not enjoy a game like this? The FA Cup been's brilliant to me this year, Dover away at Gillingham, home to Aldershot, then away to Huddersfield has been an absolutely footie-tantastic cup run - great atmospheres at all three games, some genuinely exciting football, and a real chance to 'live the dream'. No good crying about the spilled league points now - they're gone - let's embrace this game with the strongest team we can, put up a dare-to-dream performance, and show the country that Saints are really back on the football map. COYRS!
Window Cleaner Posted 25 January, 2011 Share Posted 25 January, 2011 There will be some very heavy legs on 1st Feb... Isn't that what most thought about the Oldham game but we went there and absolutely destroyed them. The Blackpool win gave us extreme confidence and it was unfortunate for Oldham. If we put in a fair showing against Utd (even though we'll probably lose) it could well give us a boost at Exeter. We have however got to get the side right against Utd and I don't want to see any more of this using a left back as a wide man malarkey. If we don't play Puncheon then Guly should act as a midfielder who plays wide left, Lambert and Barney in attack, presuming Lallana won't be ready that is, bet he wants to play though. Before Blackpool, like now, many fans were calling for us to put the 1st team out but fortunately NA is the manager and he knows where the priority is.
