How long does it take to 'heal' i.e be able to walk without crutches, roughly? And how long does it take until it's not this painful anymore? I only ask because the doctor was quite vague. Still hurts a bit now, but my injury wasn't that serious. To be honest, from what it feels and looks like I don't think I'll be walking in a week. It's so painful. Fair play though. Did mine once, was out of footie for about 3 months, a mate did his and was put in a cast, out for a year. Good job I'm not in a cast as well, bloody hell. Doctor said I might be able to come off crutches in about 3 weeks / 4 weeks I think, and I have to go back on Tuesday so we'll see. This is finding the answer you want and going by that. Get a physio to take a look at it and they will be able to grade it based on severity and then go from there. Hope it heals up soon... I certainly won't be rushing back into playing, sod doing that and making it worse. It's my right foot as well so don't want to permanently weaken it!! As I said I'm going back for an assessment on Tuesday so will see what they have to say. Seeing a physio isn't a bad shout to be honest, should I be doing this sooner rather than later? I tore my ankle ligaments about 15 years ago in the penultimate game of the season in April and didn't kick a ball again until the last friendly before the next season started in September, so I make that about 4.5 months. Even then I came back too soon and to this day I still get pain in it, but I guess that's the result of playing two games a week-end for all those years; oh to be young again..... Mine feels 'weak' but no pain really. It's also swollen and a fair bit bigger than my left foot and has been for a few years. Managed to run a maratthon on it last year though so it still works. Couldnt run or play footie for months. I can run / sprint now for about 30 mins before it starts to ache / flare up again. And this happened about 5 years ago. They didn't plaster me for a week, then realised their mistake and put me in for 5 weeks. Took ages for it to feel right again and is still weak now (although I had rolled it quite badly when I was 11....didn't go to the hospital then though). I would say I didn't play footy for about 4 months, and even now I wear a strapping when I play. I do remember the consultant at the time saying it was worse than a break, but maybe that's because I did it quite badly. As for crutches and football games, I went about a mile on my crutches from the car to the ground for the last game of the season away to West Ham (the 3-3 where we stayed up). Never sweated so much in my life, so hopping up a few steps shouldn't be that big a deal for you - take Hamster's advice! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Will have to see on Tuesday. The thought of not playing football in so long is truly depressing. Bet you were absolutely knackered, sod that, I am out of breath hopping up the stairs. I'm thinking going from Bedford Place to the ground on Saturday will be a mission, then the steps up to DD will take about half an hour but I'll manage. It's going to be interesting being right next to their fans on one leg, dread to think what will happen if we score! Hamster, out of interest, you ever had this injury? Later when the inflammation has gone down you can try some warmth. I'm afraid it's never going to be 100%, but you should be able to walk without a limp. I'm only 30 and am seeing a specialist next week to discuss operations on both ankles because I never used to rest now they go if I step off a curb slightly wrong! My favourite is when you are hopping down the stairs and you just brush your heel on a step and the pain goes straight up through the ankle. Good news and bad news - you will play again, but it might be different... I did my left one and I used to be okay with that foot, since then it is like there is no flow through the joint, it's quite rigid, maybe through protecting it. Rather than hitting a shot I tend to swing that leg like a fence post with a lump on the end and hope it goes somewhere (see Puncheon coaching manual on finishing) The last one I did was really weak but there are some excellent supports, the velcro and lace up ones, they are great when you first go back to playing. Main lesson I learned from some physio was about stretching and maintaining strength around it. Meanwhile, sit and watch the telly with your whole foot and ankle in a bowl of cold water, that relieved pressure on mine, cold and hot stimulates the healing as well. Three to four months out depending on damage, if it's worse than that, missing football will be the least of your worries. good luck. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Can see what you mean about playing football, saw a specialist today who worked at Leyton Orient once, he strapped it up and told me to get cold on it, also said I will need to see a physio, and from what some of you lot have said it doesn't sound a bad idea... I know it's gonna be different when I next play football but there's no way I'm rushing back into it, and when I do finally play again this ankle will be strapped up massively. I still get trouble from it today. If I step on a dodgy paving slab or something like that, it goes very easily and I get aches and pains from it which over the years you tend to ignore as part of Pain Management. Two weeks ago I had a tooth extraction which required stitches. I was informed that the said stitches were of the disolving kind. However they haven't dissolved yet. Currently we're in our winter break but I went for a run today: I warm up very gradually and use strapping and can still feel it a little bit. I'm going skiing tomorrow and Thursday but that's not bad as your ankle is held and supported. I use velcro and material strapping but 2 or 3 of the girls have their ankles properly strapped with surgical tape before games. You can intersperse paracetomol and ibuprofen i.e. paracetomol then two hours later ibuprofen, then two hours later paracetomol and so on. It stops that gradual onset of pain at about 3 hours. I had an apicoectomy last year, and then when they had a closer look the tooth was broken and had to come out anyway. It's the bit of the stitch inside the gum that dissolves. Mine started falling out during the second week. The part of the stitch inside your mouth will stay in one piece. Normally you can't help fiddling with your tongue until they fall out. You must be younger if you can remember.:-) When I moved here I went along to training because there were no subs to pay and, lets face it, it's more fun than going to a gym. I rely a lot on height and physique against your average Italian player; they're mostly pretty small over here (including the men!) and as I ski regularly I've got reasonable dynamic fitness. My ideal would be to play a half with a good warm-up at half time but the maximum I'd played had been about 15 minutes before I did those 90 on a heavy pitch - running into the channels, making space, closing defenders down. The9 Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 I've never torn ankle ligaments, but I've damaged the ankle ligaments in both legs, one of them twice - one time required crutches for a week and took about a month to heal but I kept trying to play on it and stopping it healing properly so it hung around for a few months in the end. I was 26 then, and it took a little bit longer than the other two times I knackered my ankles. Both those times I was in my early 20s and after a week of swelling I carried on playing with strapping, but that slowed recovery and as I kept playing and re-injuring it, I was carrying the injury for a good 6 months in one instance. All of them were football injuries, the worst caused by a keeper slide tackling my kicking leg just as I sidefooted the ball and planted my foot... FWIW I'm now 38 and merely rolled over on an ankle playing in early December and that's still giving me gip late on in games despite only playing once or twice a week now. keithd Posted 26 January, 2011 Share Posted 26 January, 2011 did mine while running for a taxi afater watching hants india few years back, turned to see if we were all together, kerbside moved in for approaching layby and i went over. went to pub, in agony, went to curry house, even more agony, finally went to A&E about midnight. im not exagerating when i say my leg went black from mid shin to my big toe, bloody revolting it was. this was prob in June, missed the start of the footy season in September. put a strap on it later than month cos i was bored not playing and that probably weakened it as some have suggested. im now 41, i played 5 a side last year and hurt it again, nothing as bad, just a twist. but wasnt able to walk properly for some 6 months without pain. the older you get the longer these things take to heal. dont rush back Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yeah i went on crutches mate, month or so after ACL surgery, i sat about half way up the itchen but end of row (ideal so then crutches dont get in the way and i could straighten my leg etc....) Sure you will be fine. As for the ankle, if it still hurts in a month or so go back and ask for an MRI. Mate of mine has done ligaments in both ankles and eventually had to have one of them operated on. Fair play, I've had a bit of practice getting up steps now so I'm not worried about that, only my seat is half way along in the middle of the block, might get a bit awkward! Swelling seems to gone down a bit which is good, hopefully it's not as bad as your mate's, obviously it's only one of my ankles but I don't want operations!
