Use the baseball bat grip - unless you're planning on being a tour pro this will suffice. There's an excellent article in a recent golf international magazine on how to do this correctly. Leadbetter has been teaching this for a few years with surprising results.

one piece of advise i was given when i started up- i've had a quick scan to see if its been said, apols if im repeating it - is when chipping from 10-15 yards off the green and inwards is to use a 7 or 8 iron for the chip and run, as opposed to lobbing it up high with a wedge. this obviously works better in summer when the ground is harder but still useful now

stand with the ball to the right of your stance, wrists in front of the ball. shaved half a dozen shots a round in no time for me.

and as has been said above, putt putt and putt again! keep practicing the putting always

Same as I was told, he said use an 8 iron and pretend your putting rather than chipping. It worked a treat. His name is Keith aswell, hope your not him cos I'd never admit it otherwise.

Where you play?

What clubs to what clubs?

Play a lot now at Crane Valley (Verwood) but also play at Meyrick Park, Moors Valley and Queens park. (Like the variety)

Did have Titleist Irons, but just bought Nike (sasquatch) set. Lot more forgiving and have helped loads with ball control.

FWIW

Ben Hogan Steel Shaft Clubs & a Hybrid 4 which takes some getting used to but then is a wonderful club to have in the bag

Had graphites for a while when I was learning but eventually found them too light and found I always swung too fast.

Calloway Fairway woods which I usually leave at home & for Christmas bought myself a square head Calloway F1 driver, that has made a heck of a difference, I hit the ball further into the sh*t than I used to but also TBF it is a lot more forgiving and I actually hit a lot more fairways even with bad drives. That and Topflite XL "Straight" balls and I reckon I added a good 25+ yards to my average driving length and when I keep my head stays down it is much more often in the middle of the fairway.

Having read through most of the posts on this thread, my final piece of advice is, don't listen to most of it!! "Keep your head still" etc, no no no no no!! Keep your head still is by far the worst tip ever, and the most used!! Your head should be allowed to move a bit away from the target in the backswing, and then it should be moving forward on the through swing. In essence, your head (which, in turn, controls your weight shift) should be moving in the direction you're swinging the club.

If ya want to play like an amateur, take advice from an amateur!! Seek out a decent pro and get some lessons....it really is the ONLY way to improve your game. Hell, I play professionally, I got out to America last night to do PGA Tour qualifying, I can play, but I still need lessons!! Advice is only well and good if it's advice tailored to your specific needs. Hence why any advice I gave earlier in this thread was not golf swing specific - cuz I can't give advice on a golf swing that I haven't seen!! Which is why, head still, do this posture, this grip, etc etc won't help you much....unless that really is what you need to work on....who knows!

Yes, good setup is crucial - actually, with a good setup, you can get away with a lot of swing flaws, but make sure a teaching pro puts you in a good setup in a lesson.

Anyway, let me know if you need any help with your games guys!! I've had more golf lessons than you'll ever imagine, from some very good coaches over the years. I'm not really a teacher myself, I only play, but I'm a fountain of knowledge!! :-)

Good luck to you all, and if you get a golf day arranged, I'd love to get involved in some way.

I use an old set of Ping Eye 2's but to be fair I haven't found anything to better them. I recently brought a set of MD irons that seem to be highly recommended in every test I've seen them in but I just didn't get on with them. I ended up selling them to a mate and going back to the Pings. I've had them for about 7 or 8 years now!

I think the 2 most important clubs in the bag are a good wedge and a putter you feel comfortable with. I've had my trusty Cleveland Tour Action 53 degree copper wedge for about 5 years now and I've never known one club make such a difference to my game. It saves me 4 or 5 shots a round every time without fail.

Putters are a very personal thing but find one you like and watch the shots drop off! I now use a Taylor Made Monza Rossa Corza. It's a big beast of a club but after many years of over experimentation with putters I've finally found one I love.

I like it, lots of character & normally relatively quiet. Best bit is you get 50% off at direct tee times online (long as your not to fussy about tee time – normally mid day)

Interesting = never seen the FT1 woods here, only the drivers.

Bloody import agents.

Good course Crane especially now the greens are now a lot better than a few years ago.

My favourite Bournemouth course though is Dudsbury its quality.

I am a member at Bramshaw which has the benefit of 2 totally different courses - the most difficult round here for me is Hamptworth where unless you can smash it long distances is very tough.

Posted

I would say Stoneham is a long way off the toughest course, have shot a 70 round there a couple of times.

Try Hayling Island if you want tough......

I would even say Waterlooville and Blackmoor are tougher than Stoneham!

I don't know about toughest, certainly the unfriendliest club.

I played there a couple of months ago with my son and found all the people I came across reasonably friendly, and enjoyed the course, but green fees were a bit pricey, but would definitely go back.

Never been met with any snobbery at Stoneham myself, played there a few times and had some lessons up there and all seemed rather friendly, they are sticklers for rules but why shouldn't they be?

For tough try Rowlands Castle

Occassionally when I want to play proper golf I've come across and stayed at the Bell Inn at Brook on the edge of the Forest.

They did a great package with B&B, Dinner and a round on the Forest. Manor & Dunbridge courses each day over a weekend.

Found Dunbridge a bit stiff upper lipped, no hats in the club house sort of thing, man that is not good when you are having a hot sweaty bad hair day, but otherwise nice.

Trouble for me is always the hassle of bringing clubs back to UK, bl**dy Heathrow take an hour, and then here in Dubai they get carried into baggage claim by hand and again takes almost an hour - not good when you've flown for 8 hours overnight in economy, not slept properly and are gagging for a fag!

King Cobra Baffle

All iron are Cobra

puttter - Never compromise woodoo.

Question during the winter months I use wilson ultra yellow balls.

does anyone thing playing with coloured balls helps your game apart from helping you find your ball?

Posted
Golfers only play with white balls.

HTH

I carry a pink "Ball of shame" if I or someone I play with has a shocking hole 'takes the 10' then the pink ball is played with for the next two holes.

I've had this ball now for over a year - she appears to be impossible to lose.
