trousers Posted 21 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 21 January, 2011 Actually, the biggest "winners" of the last 24 hours in terms of 'news burying' are Alan Johnson, Ed Balls and Ed Milliband. Without the Iraq Inquiry and the Coulson resignation that would be the lead story today.

SuperMikey Posted 21 January, 2011 Share Posted 21 January, 2011 What a snivelling little git like Coulson is doing in Downing Street anyway is beyond me. Next time we'll see him will be in Crown Court!
saint1977 Posted 21 January, 2011 Share Posted 21 January, 2011 Good, about time Cameron got rid of him and grew a pair, Coulson ought to be facing criminal charges and jail. I'm all for a free press but there was little or no public interest in any of those alleged phone hacks and besides the obvious illegality it is a blatant breach of the civil liberties of private individuals who pay their taxes just like the rest of us. Not that I am excusing the phone hacking of politicians either, this is also unacceptable unless conducted by the secret services for clearly justifiable reasons of national security. I'd ban the NOTW from printing for 6 months and a £75m fine payable by Murdoch. I am very wary of the man's stranglehold on our democracy and it worries me that a recent Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and our current Prime Minister are/have been so subservient to him. OldNick Posted 21 January, 2011 Share Posted 21 January, 2011 any government of any persuasion get into trouble as soon as they start wielding cuts on the Civil service. John majors government felt that and the Coalition will find the same. There will be lots of leaks that will make the government uncomfortable, all to save the mandarins in Westminster. As for Coulson, it was a bad error keeping him.
Hatch Posted 21 January, 2011 Share Posted 21 January, 2011 I can remember when he used to write about pop music for The Sun...how the hell did he go from there to where he is ( was) now?
um pahars Posted 21 January, 2011 Share Posted 21 January, 2011 Methinks Coulson could be in hot water if the new probes by the Met uncover anything, particularly if they cross reference that with his evidence to the Select Committee. To be honest I'm not sure how he's managed to hold down that job for so long with the line that it was a "one off rogue reporter/investigator" slowly unravelling in recent months. Think Coulson has stitched up Cameron here by taking on the job in the first place with all this hanging over him (and obviously not being honest with Cameron about what really went on), but also think Cameron's judgement has been found wanting to appoint and then stick by someone who is embroiled in some very dodgy stuff, no matter how good he is. Verbal Posted 22 January, 2011 Share Posted 22 January, 2011 Whereas in fact the news of his resignation has taken centre stage, with Blair and Alan Johnson are but bit players in today's news. Quite. Coulson demonstrates his uselessness even in resignation. For all Alastair Campbell's many faults, at least he could get his calculations right. um pahars Posted 22 January, 2011 Share Posted 22 January, 2011 A sad loss. Andy did a brilliant job and it's always good to have The Sun (and the NOWT) on your side. So, did Andy: 1) Lie to Cameron about his involvement/knowledge of the phone tapping? 2) If Andy was aware/involved (I struggle to think that anyone seriously thinks he wasn't) and he lied to Cameron, does that show poor judgement on the part of our Prime Minister in employing him? 3) Did Andy tell Cameron and Cameron covered it up/ignored it? This was always going to blow and no matter how poor (or influenced) the police investigation was, no matter what the NOTW internal investigation said and no matter how much Coulson ducked and weaved, there was no way this was going to go away. Cameron's judgement on this one to go ahead with such a toxic appointment was wanting.
