I know i'll get all sorts of moans and groans for this, but Jermaine Wright in our playoff season would get into my top 5.

Wow. S-Clarke suffers a brain fart....

Come on, you cannot be serious. And I get accused of attention-seeking with my posting...

I think Matt Oakley was one of the most under-rated players we ever had. He was the oil in the engine of midfield, keeping things moving forwards, slick and simple, never appreciated till he was missing. It was no coincidence that our fall from grace coincided with him doing his cruciate ligaments.

hehehehehe. Nice one.

did you ever see any of the players you have just commented on Alpine?

Sorry but Wright was bloody awful.

the fact that he only made 3 appearances for Blackpool after he left us, and since played for Croydon and now Lewes tells you all you need to know about the level he was playing at for us

Go do one. A truly pathetic response. Classic tw*ttish bandwagon jumping. Fed up of all the cliches on here.

I only moved over here a few years ago - I went reasonably regulary before (ooooooh, so I wasnt a ST holder...)

Steve Moran

David Armstrong

In the early 80's we played some amazing football, yet these two were seriously overlooked at International level. Had they played for bigger clubs they would have won 50 caps

Ronnie Ekelund.

Shoot, i agree with Alpen goddammit...

Altho my hesitance for not mentioning him was he wasnt underrated we just didnt get to see him long enough, thanks to some dodgy specialist telling him to sort his back out with herbal tea or whatever it was...

Paul Williams for me too, and Jones and Taylor as keepers

Rich Hall was immense, pants sideways move to West Ham where he got crocked cost him a decent career

Hippo ears Deano Richards, altho again not so sure he was underrated...

Derek Statham

nigel quashie was underrated by saints fans...i thought he gave his all for us...sure he was not the best player in the world..but put in a shift

Quashie was popular with the majority of fans while he was here. His energy and drive gave us a fighting chance. However when he left a lot of fans decided he was all of a sudden a useless skate. He was 100 times more useful than Prutton.

For me:-

Maik Taylor

Jhon Viafara

Jo Tessem

Hassan Kachloul

Patrick Colleter

I'd have said Jhon VFRR was overrated if anything. We all sang his name and loved his energy when he was here, but you could count the number of succesful passes he made on 1 hand. One of the reasons I think we underpeformed under Burley was players like Euell, JV and BWP giving the ball away too much.

My picks...

Francis Benali

Hassan Kachloul

Tommy Widdrington

Jeff Kenna

George Lawrence

David Hughes

Egil Ostenstadt

David hughes was a very good player, shame he had some many injuries as he could have been a great player for us.

steve williams lovely touch player scored against norwich (i think?) when he jigged around 5 or 6 players and passed the ball in the net! alan ball bless him rated him as one of the best midfielders he ever played with. never got used to him playing for arsenal and never played for them in the manner he did for us!

Darren Kenton wasn't great over all, but he had a few games here and there when he genuinely looked like Fabio Cannavaro. Seem to remember games against Chelsea and Arsenal where he was ridiculously good. More often than not though he didn't really cut the mustard. Redknapp bombed him out after he had a shocker against Spurs in that 5-1 game.

When David Connolly is fit (which of course is not very often) IMO he's our best striker. He improved the team massively when he came in last year, and it's no coincidence our form dipped when he dropped out of the team. It only picked up again when Barnard was settled in the team. His movement and finishing is top class.

Great keeper, what a great time that was to watch footie

He was the first to spring to mind but saw you guys had beaten me to it!

How about Ken Armstrong? Made a great contribution the year we came second in the league I think?

Fernandes for sure. Would get loads of stick for his crop circles, but my favourite type of player. Beautiful to watch, brilliant control, capable of the exceptional...........rarely an end product. Why the expression "fancy Dan" was invented.

Anders Svensson ..(signed by Stuart Gray - he didn't do everything wrong.)..

career best decision has been playing him " in the hole " ...(ala Lallana nowadays)

....ignored by Strachan who wanted him to play as a defensive midfielder...

....was given good run under Sturrocks short reign.....

....was allowed to leave when his contract was up...

....now age 34 ..captain of Elfsborg in Swedish (Prem.) League...

....played his one hundred and umpteenth game for Sweden - on a "warm-up " tour of South Africa

.....and even scored the winning goal....

under-rated? .....absolutely.

148 posts and no one has mentioned Kevin Richardson.

He came to us in 1997 as a former England international at the very end of his career. He was a holding midfielder who read the game well and through his experience and discipline allowed Carlton Palmer and others to bomb forward at every opportunity.

A real team player, never spectacular or flashy but an important part of one of our better seasons in the 90's.

does anyone agree?

....... and his wife was a hottie !!

Forall his ability he really should have done better for us - not quite in the Rudi stakes (ie no pre arrival hype) but feel we definitely didn't get the best out of either.

Massively, massively overrated IMO.

Didn't notice a queue forming for his signature after he left us despite his 'world class' reputation on here.
