I actually quite fancy this. Can I confirm that deposit and form needs to be in by end of Feb? Is there any flexibility on that?

They are trying to get them in by the end of February on the basis that Virgin will only reserve flights that long in advance. Think if you spoke to them about it they might give you perhaps a couple of weeks leeway though.

Ladies and Gents,

As a reminder, we would kindly ask you to advise us of your attendance at Saturday's presentation before the Carlisle match to ensure we can plan appropriate seating arrangements, particularly as we are expecting a large turnout.

The presentation begins at 1.30pm and will last no longer than 45 minutes.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Was that a joke?

Not a very good one, you'll be better off away from my influence in Kenya. Really wish I was going still mate. We could enrol all the kids onro SWF, what a great way to keep in touch and hear how the project is progressing when you all get home.

I'm still gutted you've decided against it. Your plan sounded really good so I hope you will reconsider if things change.

I will be sure to try and show off SWF whilst out there.

If we do move I most definitely will do aht I said and I'd be begging everyone's old laptops on here to make sure it happens. Do you believe in fate Nick?

Good luck to everyone going, they'll love it! Think a few of the player's wives are going, even if

Cortese can't make it. Looking forward to seeing the pictures etc.

Was only going to be Dan Harding's wife but she's not going now. Only link to the club going is Adi Butterworth I believe.

how many fans are going? if only one club represenatitive going it does lose a bit of it's credability, i heard the chief of the local tribe had already made up his spare room for Cortese? he won't be happy and will be sharpening his spear as we speak

Was originally 30+ but a few couldn't raise the funds so it is now 25.

The itinerary doesn't mention the Q&A meal night with Cortese in a local hotel, which was announced early on... Might just be covering their @rses by saying he might not be there...

Two days till Saints Foundation heads to Kenya...

Seems Corteses' attendance is now "unconfirmed", which, if he doesn't go, will be the first decision of his I'll be pretty sceptical of. Shouldn't have been said if he was never going to go...

Where have you heard that he's probably not going? The original article couldn't have been any more categoric:

Chairman Commits To Kenya Trip

Posted on: Thu 10 Feb 2011

Southampton Chairman and Saints Foundation Ambassador Nicola Cortese has announced he will be travelling with his wife Alexandra to Kenya in November 2011 to support the Saints Foundation's ambitions to make a difference.

The Saints Foundation has teamed up with KenyanAdventure and is looking to recruit 25 fans for an opportunity of a lifetime by spending time working with community projects in developing areas of Kenya. Nicola and Alexandra are committed to supporting the Saints Foundation charitable ambitions and that there is no better example of that commitment than taking time out to travel to Kenya and spend time working with the Saints Foundation participants.

Nicola commented: "I introduced the Saints Foundation to increase the charitable work we do. I have 2 healthy children of my own who have a privilege lifestyle and live in a privilege part of the world, and I'm acutely aware that this lifestyle isn't applicable to 95% of children, and therefore my wife and I didn't give it a second thought to support the Kenya Expedition. Working with young children in a Kenyan school and supporting their personal development is one of the key motivations for our trip, as well as raising money for our local disability programme in Southampton."

"I see first hand the impact of the work the Foundation delivers locally and to extend our reach to a wonderful part of the world is inspiring. I would encourage fans to take up this opportunity for an experience of a lifetime."

The 10 day trip takes place in November 2011 with Nicola and Alexandra joining the expedition for a couple of days for what will be a unique travel experience in one of Africa's more enchanting nations.

As well as supporting young people in Kenya, each participant will also be raising funds for the Saints Foundation disability programme in the local area.

To take part in this opportunity of a lifetime and spend time with the Chairman Nicola Cortese, there are 2 forthcoming event meetings at St Marys Stadium on the following dates:-

• Thursday 3rd February 2011 from 6.30pm - 7.15pm, or

• Saturday 12th February 2011 from 1.30pm - 2.15pm

If you are unable to attend one of the above events for further information on the expedition visit; www.kenyanadventure.com/saints.html or call 0845 6889370.

One of the other volunteers emailed the club (Adi I'm guessing) and was told that his attendance is unconfirmed... No mention of him, the evening meal with him or indeed the planned football tournament in the itinerary..

He may well still be attending and tourney might go ahead but doesnt appear to be guaranteed as it sounds in that article...

Good luck and enjoy

I spent four years in Mombasa. I used to see the occasional saints shirt on locals.

Be ready for being out of breath if you are playing any matches up country

Tourist souvenirs pay about a quarter of original price asked ( unless it's a shop)

Cheers

Johnny

Good luck to all those going, especially my mate Liquidshok.

It's very comforting to see the club doing good work like this and spreading the good word in a way that is not profit focused. We're never gonna get global exposure from these ventures and it appears to be a truly altruistic programme. I accept that not everyone wishes to support non UK based projects when it comes to charitable use of monies but the Foundation appears to have something to suit everyone's wishes.

At the end of the day it's a relatively expensive method of getting help to the beneficiaries but we must also remember that it raises awareness of the plight of those less fortunate than us in far-off lands, we can't rely on governments to do this for the greater good of the human race. When our group return they will be full of heart-rending tales that can humble the hearts of many and maybe the realisation that WE can help people that we may never ever meet in person, we can enrich their lives and therefore our own.

Ironic (or should that poignant?) that they fly out on the day when this countries minds are focused on and remembers those who risked and gave their lives in far off lands so that we might be able to help communities in far off lands. I find this very touching, very touching indeed.

IIRC the town has decent internet facilities compared to many regions, I'd like to see a few pics if any of you get the chance to upload them to this thread please?

The weather forecast isn't good this week btw, only 31 degrees most of the week but Thursday rises to 32 so that might take the chill off:

Just back from the trip- an amazing few days with a really great bunch of saints fans. Nicola didnt make it, but to be honest I dot think anyone minded at all. If the foundation do a further trip I would really recommend going on it- the kenyans are wonderful people, and it is possible to make a difference in a short space of time.

Without wishing to detract from the excellent intentions and achievements of this visit, i'd be interested if you ever got an explanation as to why Mr Cortese reneged on his "committed to attend" promise?

Everything was booked for him but he had to pull out at the last minute. Guess some business came up, which needed him to stay, what with us being top of the table n all....

Didn't affect the trip in any way and other than the missing q&a session it wouldn't have made much difference if he was there really.

Hello Matt and Ally I presume. Using my just-a-gp skills I've worked out how to accept messages now so feel free to send private messages of love and adulation. Started uploading my photos but they're not that good/many as I was so busy saving the world, so looking forward to when Mike gets the group collection up online.

To jog your memory 'doc, this is Liquidshokker:

Good work lads, what were the 'projects'?

Haha, I don't look like him!!! Never understood why so many strangers say I do..

We were divided into groups of about 7 and sent to schools, where some of us had our own class and some got involved in manual labour making toilet blocks and new classrooms. At our school I taught lessons and helped repair the fence in the playground. Few of us took part in football training in the evenings and most were involved in a match on Sunday.

Got very attached to the kids and got on well with the rest of the group. Just needed you there Hamster!

The house thing was finalised only yesterday, much later than I'd hoped tbh but surplus funds are limited so probably a good thing in that respect that I missed out. Looking for tenents and new job now.

Guessing it was pretty hot out there? What about accommodation, was it as comfortable as they said at the presentation? What about language issues, you said that you taught some of the kids?

Yeah was pretty hot at times but bearable. Was thunderstorms during a couple of evenings. Accommodation was good. Bit too nice really as felt bad going back there after seeing what the kids were living in. Because of the size of the group and security we didnt do homestays. Most people speak at least some English out there. The directors of the schools spoke good English and there's usually always one or two kids in each class that speak good level of English.
