Noticed this on the OS, good to see SFC getting behind such a great project. I went on a trip with the same company in 2009 ( http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?13583-Donations&highlight=kenyan ).

Must say, anyone considering it, do it! It was an experience I will never forget, I made a few friends for life and the experience even helped me get my current job.

I was hoping to go back in 2012 but may go along with the Saints foundation.

(Please don't hijack this thread with Cortese bashing, thanks)

Have been considering this today. I wouldn't be much use teaching or with football coaching though (not the most confident of types), so I don't know what use I'd be! I'd love to go out there and make a difference though.

I notice on the voluntary itineraries it mentions flights etc aren't included but I guess going through saints foundation they are?!

I may be able to find the guts to do this as I think it would do me and Africa a lot of good :)

Yeah when I did it a while back I had to find my own flights but looks like you don't have to with the Saints Foundation.

Booked to do it a couple of months ago on your advice. Was it your lot taking photos when the company was flashing up on the screen at half-time Saturday?

Really? Good to hear. When you going? Yeah I got a bit excited when I saw him on the screen. He was the guy I was dealing with when I booked in 2009.

Ladies and Gents,

I would recommend anybody interested in this opportunity to come along to one of the presentations - Thursday 3rd February (6.30pm) or Saturday 12th February (1pm, prior to Carlisle United match) - at St. Mary's to find out the various ways that both the Saints Foundation and KenyanAdventure can help supporters make their attendance on the trip a reality.

The basic information can be found at http://www.kenyanadventure.com/saints.html or you can email Dan Mew at KenyanAdventure (dan@kenyanadventure.com) for further details.

We are set to announce the attendance of a very special guest on the trip this weekend, prior to the FA Cup match against Manchester United.

I've sent off an email today. Basically, I can't get back for either presentation as I'm at uni but I'm keen as mustard. Hopefully studying sports science and having a level 1 fa coaching badge will give me a chance of going

From what the guy I emailed was saying you don't need any experience or have to fight for your place. If you give them 2k you're in. They may struggle to find 25 people who will. I'm going to the one on 12th so I'll take notes for ya ;-)

yeah that would be excellent. although as fate would have it I'm coming back for the 125yr celebration at the mayflower on the 13th so if I can shift plans I may just make it

Would really love to go' date=' just don't know how I can possibly get the money together. How's everyone else planning to do it?![/quote']

Well when people at work get involved with charity stuff they normally raise around 900 by emailing around a justgiving link. I emailed the guy arranging the trip and he said there are lots of ways you can raise the money and they will assist with this by providing sponsorship forms, justgiving account and can help with general ideas on raising the money.

2k isn't really a lot if you ask everyone you know for a donation. Already got a couple of rellies willing to stump up 100 each...

Yes I suppose you're right. Think I might pop along to one of the meetings.

Ladies and Gents,

We are obviously delighted to announce Nicola's involvement, which demonstrates his commitment to the Saints Foundation.

We are aware cost is an issue for some potential participants. Therefore, we would strongly recommend anybody looking to find out more to come to one of the information presentations where we will talk through the ways we can help support those looking to join us on this unique opportunity.

The presentation tomorrow evening will begin at 6.30pm in the Terry Paine suite at St. Mary's.

Alternatively, our second presentation will be held at 1.30pm in the Foundation department prior to the home fixture against Carlisle United on 12th.

Please visit http://www.kenyanadventure.com/saints.html and advise us of your attendance so we can plan accordingly.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there is going to be a selection process if more than 25 people sign up to go? Surely if more than 25 people find 2k they won't be turned away?

Thanks

So, if you can put away £100 a month you only need to find about £1k in sponsorship.

Might try to get to the presentation before the Carlisle match...

Yep, I plan on raising as much as I can and then just paying the rest myself. Not loaded but it's an incentive to raise as much as I can before it gets to that stage :)

Not sure wether to switch my plans tomorrow and go to the presentation then. Be good to get it done and get the ball rolling.

(Un)fortunately (depending on when you catch me), I don't live in So'ton any more so tomorrow's presentation is not viable. Would be interested in hearing some snippets if you or any other attendees on here could kindly oblige!

Presentation was good, around 25 people turned up and was a mixed bunch. Wasnt massively informative but didn't really come away with any outstanding questions.

Accommodation will be very basic but better than you'd first imagine. At least 3 volunteers will share accommodation with each family.

Projects available will depend on who is interested in what.

Deposit of 150 to be paid by end of feb and 50% of remainder by 8 weeks before trip and rest 3 weeks before (if I remember rightly!)

They have contingency plans if more than 25 Pay to go but didn't go into detail.

Prob missed a few important details so best get yourself along on 12th if you're interested.

Just got back from St. Mary's. It was a brief but interesting talk by Dan from Kenyan Adventure and a couple of guys representing the Saints Foundation.

Here are a few brief notes which I imagine others could expand on:

- The outbound flight would leave around 9pm on Sunday 13th November (landing Monday morning). With the return flight on Thursday 24th November, so it's a 10-night stay.

- At the minute they are just hoping to get 25 people involved but said they had contingency plans if there was to be more interest. It sounded as though they wouldn't be turning people away.

- A £150 deposit would need to be paid, with £75 going to Virgin to secure a seat on the flights and £75 to Kenyan Adventure just for booking confirmation.

- 50% of the total money would need to be paid 8 weeks before departure, with the final 50% required with 4 weeks to go.

- A pre-departure meeting would be held to discuss final preparations around 6 weeks before leaving, but there would almost certainly be a meeting held once all the places are confirmed, so those involved can get acquainted.

- It looks as though the booking cut off would have to be around the end of February due to the need to secure the flights.

- CRB checks are not necessary due to the number of staff members that would be around the younger kids.

- Community help (such as working in schools) would generally be between 9am and 3pm, with most sports, particularly football, held in the later afternoon. This allows people to get involved with both sides, but if people did not feel comfortable helping out during lessons for whatever reason, then it may be possible to help with sports classes during school time.

- Swahili and English are both widely spoken in Kenya

- A trip to a large safari park is included in the cost and would take place on the final weekend. Following the safari tour there will be an hour journey up to the equator, so there is the chance to stand on both sides of the hemisphere at one time.

- There are plans for a tournament on the Sunday of the final weekend in a local stadium whereby several matches can take place between the teams that have been coached and those that have gone on the trip (including Nicola).

- Cortese will be attending for 3-4 days and is said to be keen to get involved whilst over there.

- The Saints Foundation said there is potential for an annual trip, teaming up with Kenyan Adventure, if this November is as successful as they hope it will be.

- I also spoke to one of the Saints Foundations guys afterwards and he said they were hoping to try out a few events in 2011, such as sky diving, the Great South Run and possibly fashion shows. Which would, if successful enough in terms of fundraising, also become annual events by the Foundation.

And that's about all I can remember at the moment :)

Nice one, I noticed quite a few people filling out the booking forms at the end, do you think many have signed up already?

I think about 10 or so people grabbed forms and filled them in. I'm confident that something will be arranged for those who don't get a place even if it's not Kenya. They won't want to turn down the money.

Thanks very much Liquidshokk and Nexstar!

So... are you in?

No problem :)

Back in September I booked to do 3 weeks of football coaching with Kenyan Adventure this coming July, so I went along tonight to find out abit more about the experience and see what the Saints Foundation trip had to offer.
