Turkish Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 Amidst all the doom, gloom and wrist slitting from some following our draw yesterday and the injury to Lallana prompting predictions of a slide down the table and struggling until he is back, then lets have a word on the defence which no one has mentioned at all. We have only conceded once in the last five games now and only 5 goals in our last 10 matches showing the team has been mixing style with steel. Whilst Lallana is a big player for us and will be missed for however long he is out, if teams dont score against us we dont lose, it's as simple as that, as NA would say. We have other players who can create and score goals given that our defence is rock solid right now then we have every reason to be optimistic that results wont suffer as with Lambert, Chamerlain, Barnard and Gully all finding the back of the net regularly we will still score goals FFS.

I agree entirely.... and on a related point I thought that Richardson yesterday was very strong defensively. His distribution has rightly been criticised as poor yet some of his defensive tackles were top notch.
sfc4prem Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 Our defence is solid and rightly so with the amount we've spent on it. Fullbacks are both good defensively, Richardson especially. Dickson is great going forward usually, as is Fonte. Seaborne and Jaidi rotated every now and again seems to be working. Gives Jaidi a rest whilst giving Seaborne chances to improve as well. Solid as a rock. I'm not worried about goals either, you don't go from scoring 6 against Oldham (only one being Lallana's and it was flukey, before anyone spouts anything about us not being able to score without Lallana). We're not a one man team, and hopefully we can prove that emphatically against Tranmere. Good post Turkish.
Fan The Flames Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 We have goal scorers but can we afford to be with out an influential play maker for too long, goalless draws wont get us promoted FFS.
NickG Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 agree plenty of other routes for us to score - Ox-C, Guly and Lambert are all better than at the start of season
Turkish Posted 16 January, 2011 Author Posted 16 January, 2011 We have goal scorers but can we afford to be with out an influential play maker for too long, goalless draws wont get us promoted FFS. Lallana was not responsible for all 19 goals we scored in the 5 games before yesterday, FFS.
Smirking_Saint Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 As i said before mate. We are not a one man team, bookies do not make one man teams champions elect. And as good as Lallana is, he is not the Maradonna to the 80's Argentina. We have other players, on paper, some very very good players that most teams would love to have in their starting 11, let alone on the bench. I guess its just the premise of the Saints fan, being overly negative.
Smirking_Saint Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 We have goal scorers but can we afford to be with out an influential play maker for too long, goalless draws wont get us promoted FFS. We are not a one man team FFS, Lallana has had bad games and we have won. Last year Lambert was prolific, this year he is not, but others have stepped up. We will see the same.
B Rabbit Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 Lallana was not responsible for all 19 goals we scored in the 5 games before yesterday, FFS. I've just realised who you are.....it all makes sense now. ....and your American Psycho image.

Turkish Posted 16 January, 2011 Author Posted 16 January, 2011 As easy as it is to say we are ****ed as it is to say everything will be OK, no one knows, so why gamble when we have the cash. It is a fact that if we sign someone as a replacement, will not be as good as Lallana, this is a guy who was interesting midtable premier sides, FFS, we are not a one man team FFS, we have a solid defence, a strong midfield and strikers capable of sticking the ball in the net, any team in the world would miss their best player, but i am sure NA is capable of finding a way of playing so his absence is minimised. Talk of a slide down the table is drama queenism, FFS

Seaside Saint 2 Posted 16 January, 2011 Posted 16 January, 2011 We've also only conceded 5 goals at home in the 4 months since Adkins has been here which is brilliant. Not sure why we're linked with a Bournemouth defender then, it seems like the last area we need to strengthen?
PokingFun Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 We have goal scorers but can we afford to be with out an influential play maker for too long, goalless draws wont get us promoted FFS. We won't win every game FFS.
NickG Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 We have goal scorers but can we afford to be with out an influential play maker for too long, goalless draws wont get us promoted FFS. 3 goalless draws in last 30 games.
Dimond Geezer Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 We have only conceded once in the last five games now and only 5 goals in our last 10 matches . Yet some posters think Kelvin is a crap keeper, and the defence isn't comfortable in front of him!
West End Saint Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I agree with the op posted much the same on the post match thread we do look solid at the back but also the rest of the team are defending very well we look dertermind to keep a clean sheet the team look up for the battle. The 1st time I really noticed it was away at Daggers on a awful pitch were we had to fight & win the right to play Saturday we were immense at the back what a player Fonte is Jaidi is a rock at the start of the season I thought he was finished but the big fella is getting better & we now have 4 quality full backs. There are always going to be days when it is not happening going forward but if you can keep it tight at the back we will do well
Doctoroncall Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 Having one player out isn't so bad but the combination of Lallana and Chaplow is a bit of a worry. It's time the team showed it's quality and can cope without both, hopefully only for a few games. If it's long term for both, the loan market beckons. I don't mind winning games 1-0, the defence is sound and the team will carry on creating, we'll be in with a chance more often than not but with the second half of the season now underway, the team needs to up their game as i don't think Saints can lose as many as they have. Brighton have still only 3 defeats all season, we need to be as impressive as that if the title is the goal.

Most of our defeats came before NA and we have been in league winning contention form for a while now. Lallana will be a loss as any team would miss their best player but we'll just have to get on with it. FFS

up and away Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 Amidst all the doom, gloom and wrist slitting from some following our draw yesterday and the injury to Lallana prompting predictions of a slide down the table and struggling until he is back, then lets have a word on the defence which no one has mentioned at all. I would agree on past performances that if the defence does their business, we have more than enough fire power to down any team. Notts were not knocking on the door very often and the full backs never really exposed themselves in trying to get forward. I am not completely sure which is the right policy but I can't argue if we have an off day and still end up with a point against an in form team. If this were to continue for a few games I am sure there will be threads demanding the full backs to contribute more to the attack? Experience has shown your point to be valid and I have advocated the same position myself in previous games. It's just strange that in the past I have worried that the full backs were exposing the defence too much in getting forward, whereas I was looking for slightly more from them on Saturday. I'll bottle out and leave this one to Adkins.
belgrave Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 the only saints team that gave me any confidence that they would hang on to anything was under Hoddle (excluding the 7 lucky goals game). he fixed up the defence to such an extent, I can remember us drawing 0 - 0 at home to charlton with zero shots on target by either side (draper clipped the bar). that was a novelty at the time. still is now. Saints and 0 - 0 ? FFS
Fan The Flames Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 3 goalless draws in last 30 games. Exactly the lack of draws, goalless or otherwise, is why we are so high up the table FFS.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 If our defence is so sound, why are people on the Notts Counteh thread having a massive go at our full backs? FFS.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I thought County were a pretty decent defensive unit. We are not going to win every game from now on in, not even all our home games. Our defence is so solid now that we'll pick up points in games where sides shut us out. People were just getting a bit carried away after the last 5 games, we're always going to be able to score goals with or with out AL. It is a solid back 4 that will take us up.
saint84 Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 Good original post but it's no coincadence that we didn't play well at the start of the season without Adam Lallana and we struggled creativitly without him on Saturday. Having said that we are better now then at the start of the season and with lots of away games coming up the need for a creative midfield player is less as long as Lallana's injury isn't long term and we keep oxo.
Whitey Grandad Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 All suiccessful teams are founded upon a good defence and when you are building a team you always start from the back and work forwards. Keeping a clean sheet gives you the best chance of winning the game.
Fan The Flames Posted 18 January, 2011 Posted 18 January, 2011 Ok the stats, we failed to score in 14% of games when AL has played over the last two seasons. We failed to score in 66% of games he hasn't played in over the last two seasons. Points per game with AL 2.44, without 1.
