Chinese fighter 'has changed power balance'

Well done you Tories with your defence cuts.

Mr Goon, co-founder of the Air Power Australia think tank, said the US and its allies had been ''caught flat-footed'' by the J-20's maiden appearance.

The J-20 has been described by some analysts overseas as ''unimpressive'' and a ''mish-mash of Soviet and American design features''.

But Mr Goon said he believed it was clear from the images of the plane and other material that it was far superior to the JSF, and even to the US's top-of-the-range F-22 ''Raptor'' jet.

''It is basically a lot more stealthy than the JSF, will fly faster and higher, be more agile, and because it's a much bigger aircraft it can carry more weapons,'' Mr Goon said. ''This thing has been designed to compete with and defeat the F-22. They haven't even bothered with the JSF, and why would you?''

Truth is, no one knows anything about this plane's capabilities. It suits some people's agendas to talk up a threat.

2 comparisons annual US military spend in the Times 700 million dollars, Chinese annual military spend 50 million dollars. Enough said.

those figures seem a tad small?

Firstly, it looks like they have ripped off the design from the F-22.

Secondly, just because they've developed a supposedly good fighter, it doesn't mean they are going to start attacking other countries left, right and centre, so I don't see what difference it really makes. It is designed for air-to-air combat, meaning its primary purpose is for defense rather than attack. If they had suddenly started building lots of stealth bombers with nuclear capability, then I would be a teeny bit more concerned. But then, the US already has that capability and has never actually used it in anger, so there is no reason to believe the chinese would either.

im sure you meant billion dollars

what you dont take into account is the vast amount of money the US spend over seas..on bases, personnel, operations etc...where as China dont

as for other material....maybe it is Radar absorbing rubber on parts of the plane..?..maybe tiles..?

also, as for no one knowing..well, again you would be wrong on that one also

Yep I did, should have read billions, I was on my way out and rushed the reply. I wanted to get the message across that the US spends more money on "defence" than the rest of the world combined.

the rush by the West to re modernise the Chinese economy with our expertise was always a short term folly. For 10years of cheap imports we have awoken the dragon. Its dominance will have everlasting effects and we will not be able to get it to sleep again.

20 years on and we will be the lap dog of both Russia(we are going to be so reliant on their gas supplies they have got europe over a barrel) and China.

Typical shortermism by the west for small time gain.

The US is obviously still by far the strongest but can you judge China's military capability but the amount of money spent? I doubt it's that simple.

Can't see what all the fuss is about, China is a very powerful country so they might have out Americaned the Americans with a new bit of military hardware. The Chinese don't need military supremacy, they could bring America and most of the world to it's knees within a week or so just by unloading the billions of US Dollars that they hold devaluing the currency.

Many folks see China as a bit of a dim witted Hicksville country, the truth is that it is a very sophisticated intelligent rapidly modernising country. The rest of the world can't get it's head round that is that the majority of Chinese are quite happy living in a single party state: anywhere else this would be viewed as a disagreeable dictatorship.

The Russians won't bend us too far over a barrell in regards to gas IMO.

We will as a country however suffer for not getting our fingers out and building more Nuclear power as quickly as we have needed, our over reliance on a very messy and unreliable wind network is stupid IMO.

Nice comment at the end. "I look forward to their moon landings, it'll be nice to see The Clangers again."

Short term memory function I take it! so I'll refresh it for you.........

IT WASN'T THE TORIES WHO PUT US IN THIS MESS!

There.

No it wasn't the Tory party but it was their Tory boy public school boy friends the bankers who did put us in this mess. Now those same bankers helped vote their favourite party back to power to help keep their bonus safe. Defence might well have fallen behind but I'm more worried that we will soon have to kiss goodbye to the NHS. Unless you are rich enough for that not bother you, that concerns me.
