It's not sunk in yet that saints are actually 2nd in the league and have a real chance of winning the league.

I've never known saints to be in contention for anything but mid table mediocrity and/or relegation.

Been following saints since 89/90 and can't wait to see us (hopefully) go up, and as champions.

It feels good, doesn't it!!

And to think those of us who said going into Administration could work out best for us in the long run were castigated and ridiculed on here.... ;-)

Yep! however you'd have loved the late seventies/early eighties

If you can't get to grips with being in second place in Division 3 in January, I'd hate to see how excited you get at Christmas when Santa's been.

Bad day?

i feel that today could be a real turning point for us saints fans.

on the back of a 6-0 thrashing of a team that had only lost once at home this season,a so called local rival lose a chance of taking our 2nd place and not only that lose there 'loyal' manager.

here's hoping i don't have to eat these words come 5 o'clock tomorrow

It does real very strange. I declared myself a Saints fan at the start of our last season in the prem, and I have had precious little to cheer about until recently. In fact from that point, I have only really witnessed a long and painful decline that was increasingly evident after our playoff loss. Now however we have money behind us, a sound structure and a very good manager. To be in such a strong league position is completely alien to me...

Damn, another nose bleed.

Erm hello everyone.

Ive never heard of Southampton but I saw in the paper that you were 2nd in League 1 and on a fine run of form!

I was thinking of becoming a supporter, although I live in London and Im not sure how for oop north you are.

Could I become a "Saint?"

I have been a saints fan since 1976, its a brilliant rollercoaster ride. And by the way i'm 42.

well I am the previous generation Sir woody and I can tell you the 65-66 promotion season was pretty hot ..and the following period when Ron was King !

I completely agree that we finally have "something to cheer about" and "it's great supporting Saints at the moment". Yes, that's right, it is. Bloody great. However, "it hasn't sunk in" and "doesn't feel real" that we are 2nd in Division 3 in January? What? Get a grip.

I don't care what division it is, its exciting and I'm loving it. Look at Leeds and Norwich who went up last year. We could gostraight through the Championship imo. Come on Saints let's blow this league away!

Wake up!!!! we are in the third division ffs!!

Dodgy Trousers analogy alert....

Let's say someone had a son or daughter who used to play an instrument at the top level for their age group and then had a serious illness or accident. They then go through several years of recovery and rehabilitation and are finally able to start to playing the instrument again but, because of the trauma they have been through it almost like learning again from square one.

I know those early days of success would make me very proud. I wouldn't be sitting there thinking: "That's good son but you're not back up to the standard you were before the accident/illness".

Ok, bad analogy, perhaps, but those who mock fellow supporters who feel a sense of pride in where our football team is at the moment aren't looking at the bigger picture IMHO.

Or ........ I have a brother. He had a terrible accident. Many thought he wouldn't survive and abandoned him. I stuck with him; he's my brother after all and irreplaceable. Then a Swiss doctor came into our lives with a cure. With the right management my brother will make a full recovery. I'm so proud and grateful.

Brings a lump to your throat innit

Success is success, no matter what division you're in.

Are you saying (and Depoo) that you're a fair weather supporter and will only have some sort of resemblance of pride when were in the prem?

The players deserve recognition for what they're doing right now.

FFS cheer up and enjoy life, it might not be so gloomy after all.

No. I suggest you support Manure like most of your close neighbours. Travel is easy, every home game you can lift share.

You are clearly a man of extremes. A man who sees only black and white. Perhaps you are bipolar? There are other feelings in between "not feeling real" and being "gloomy". I am thrilled with the way that Saints are playing and enjoying it immensely. Your purple prose is my sticking point.

I started watching Saints in the season we were promoted from the old third division,. In 51 years i've seen 3 promotions and 3 relegations and we're back where I started. What a waste of time that was!

Not mocking just being a realist! this league is pap, week in week out we face 11 names anonymous names. Not sure on how many who contribute to this board actually go to the games ???

I have been going to watch saints since my grandad first took me in 1979 and have been through many ups and downs. Yes ok its good to be at the top BUT its the third division.

It was not long ago when we were on the road to Cardiff and then on the plane headed for Romania. Lets leave the musical instrument analogies for today and start getting exited when we are back in the Prem where we belong.

Got to go now need to be somewhere in 3 hours ;~)

When were we last top of any league?

Must be 25 years ago?

We were top of the Prem for about 3 minutes when 2-0 up against Derby at Pride Park in 2000 after 22 minutes of the first game of the season - but I don't think we've managed to be top of a league whilst I've been supporting Saints, which is since 1991.

We MAY have topped the CCC when 1-0 up against QPR after Jermaine Wright scored too, but I'm not convinced on that one.

Ah, but there were lots of fun moments along the way .. don't you think ?

well, "officially" it was 1988-89 season when we were top - after two games. A rather mediochre season when we finished 13th.

The best time must have been 1981-82 when we were top of old Div.1 (now Prem.) from the end of January until mid March.

(injuries to Steve Moran and Danny Wallace blunted the attack in the later games and we ended up 7th.)

BEST SEASON, was of course 1983-84 when we were never dropped below 5th place after end of Feb. then went 10 games undefeated and finished 2nd behind Liverpool...even though we beat them 2-0 at The Dell and got a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Does it feel real yet? :(

Typical Saints great results are always followed by bad news of some sort. But it could have been worse Saturday I suppose, its just the injury news thats really unsettling :(

We are the best football team in the world...;)

Lost our way slightly but now on the road back to the top..

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea etc are looking over their shoulder.. Man Utd are very nervous about the cup game.

In the meantime I see 3 points against Tranmere..No problem for the mighty Saints..:)

What about now?

No change - we're still 2nd if we win our game in hand and 5 points off top.

If we'd reached the position we are in now (in January) after a good run of games we'd all be delighted.

But it's come on the back of a couple of bad results ergo it's all doom and gloom.

You gotta love the human psyche.
