Deppo Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Indeed. Starting the comment with the caveat "I recall" is really saying it as if it is a fact... "I recall" isn't a caveat. "If I recall correctly" is. The former states that something actually happened. The latter doesn't. If you want to hedge your language to soften your perceived belligerence, go with the second one. arfurdent Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Oh Ladies please, disarm the handbags you are all supposed to be Saints fans or had that passed you by As a ST holder I can see a few worthy points being made. However I also have expat friend who are totally passionate over Saints and their opinions are totally valid. They listen to the commentary and watch the goals, they can make their own minds up. However not being an expat does not make you a bad person as some seem to be suggesting. Still if you get a buzz out of schoolgirl style spats then go for it. It does seem to indicate an enclosed mentality where the real world does not seem to intrude. If you want a good slanging match who is brave enough try the UGI site for a polite chat? lol xxx

Chez Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 I posted this on the ABH thread, but now see this one is more appropriate. Amazing how many threads end up taking about the same thing. I'm with Alpine. We need to working hard to bring in the best available talent and we need to be doing this all the time. Resting on your laurels and thinking this squad is the best we can do is folly. It can always be improved, it may not be,but we should always be trying. I think also what Alpine means is that we should be actively chasing players right now not waiting till ours have left the building. Of course in answer to that, Adkins has said that they have made bids for players, so in effect they are chasing talent. I think the question is Alpine, what more do you want them to be doing or once again do you think that our efforts are half hearted affairs? Genune question by the way. I must say that we do seem to have this this same discussion/arguement in every window. (you) Alpine bemoans the apparent lack effort to make signings and others point out that no one knows how much work is going on in the background and how many offers are being knocked back. Dalek2003 Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Thanks for the info. If that is the clubs position, well, we all just have to crack on and hope it is the correct position and nothing happens that causes the promotion campaign to become unstuck, since this would represent the biggest false economy in the clubs history... My personal opinion is that this is a mistake, for a variety of reasons. Agree with Alpine.
Daren W Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 I seem to remember NA already stated that offers would be made and if they came off great if they didn't then move on with the squad we have. The issue with a "marquee" signing is the disruption that it could bring to the current squad who are clearly working with and for each other at the moment. The first 16/17 players in the squad now know there role in the squad/ team. One of the most impressive pieces of NA's management so far has been the use of the full squad without the use of the dreaded term "rotation". He picks teams on a horses or courses basis, and the players understand and seem to support each other in that strategy. You could argue that the one member who didn't get this strategy was loaned out to Milwall, and we may have played AOC a little more than will be good for a 17 year old first year professional in the long run. I still don't get some people on here who are not happy unless we sign a player every week. The squad is the strongest, it's now a question of managing it to produce to it's potential. Spot on, we need cover, nothing more...

Sensible post - to which I would only say that we should only ever buy players IF they are good enough to walk into our first team. To do otherwise is false economy and EXACTLY the reason we are on League One and not playing Liverpool this afternoon. You have a squad to provide cover. You have a FIRST TEAM to win football matches. Those on or around the fringes of the first team should either be: first team players coming back from injury, first team players having a dip in form, reserve/youth/squad players who are now showing they are champing at the bit and almost ready for first team action. If you buy someone as cover: 1. it doesn't make the bloke in the position try remotely harder. 2. if someone is coming in and prepared to sit on the bench, what sort of motivation do they have? 3. it isn't strengthing your squad it's WEAKENING it. It stands to reason since you've already accepted that they are worse than the bloke in posession...

Chez Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Guided Missile ? I don't see that on this thread. I saw a post from GM saying you post a lot because you don't have the opportunity to see the side. Nothing about expats being bad people. If I've missed something, point me to it as my best mate, and a big Saints fan is living in Stockholm these days so I wouldn't be impressed by that. Guided Missile Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 Pretty sure he posted it last year in a thread which got locked. Not sure I ever posted that expats are bad people. I lightheartedly placed them in two categories, based on the style of their posts and wasn't far off the mark, I think: Expat Saints "Fans"... ...seem to come in two flavours on this site.Last of the Summer Wine Usually post in glowing terms about days gone by, trying hard to recapture the glory days, back in the mother country. About as entertaining to read as the TV show of the same name, and also about as relevant, to the fans streaming into St. Marys nowadays. Keep it up guys, I think you know who you are, but don't blame me if I think of Compo, when I read your posts. Let's face it, nostalgia is not what it used to be. Last of the Scummer Whine Usually post in negative terms about anything related to the club, city or the country. In the early stages of going native, so not reached that grumpy charm that Compo has. More the expression that the club, city or country they left behind didn't quite fit their ideals, those that served them so badly when they lived here. Zero entertainment value in their posts at the moment and the only relevance to the fan of today is the possiblity that more impressionable section of our fanbase may detect a slight lowering of their moral, when reading them. I think of Lord Haw Haw when reading the uninformed dirge they post. He was hanged for treason, but I think the penalty for them, when Saints are back in the premiership will be the sight of their gradual decline into a sad exile, never quite belonging to their new country and unable to return to God's country to see their team play... I also took offence to an old TT post, but would probably get on great with the guy over a drink, when my American wife and I go the West Coast this year. Just to recap, I am sure many found this post cringeworthy for a guy of bus pass age: Expat Saints Fans. Don't ye luv 'em... I challenge anyone to read this post, from one of our favourite, over 50, over there, ex-pats and not feel that our loss is also their loss. "What do I do?" As little as possible mate...live by the ocean, drive a big, new fu¢k of Merc and have a hot young b!tch (as numerous posters can confirm). Raise Guide Dogs for The Blind and coach 'soccer'..." Does "douche bag" get through the swear filter? hot young b!tch???...guide dogs for the blind??? Class Act...

Word up bruvver, after all he's representing the South Coast on the West Coast. Welcome back, Steve. I am very happy we may be able to resume our little cyber battle of wits. I don't think any posts should be taken as representative of a persons character, nor seriously, but they are good indicators and my experience of being an ex-pat is that it is almost impossible not to indicate how great expat life is to people living in the old country, when very often it is more about self-justification to soften the harsh realities of not being able to watch Saints on a rainy afternoon against Notts County. What expats have to remember is that if it wasn't for the Saints fans streaming into St. Mary's this afternoon and for every other home game, they'd have no club to support. Listen to me, mush (I couldn't force myself to type Word up, bruvver). Respect to the home and away supporters...

I'd take that further and include people like my mate who has moved to London and is continually telling me how great it is (he's obviously convincing himself more than he is me!!!). What expats have to remember is that if it wasn't for the Saints fans streaming into St. Mary's this afternoon and for every other home game, they'd have no club to support. But I also accept that if it wasn't for TT and others streaming in to the Dell in the 60's & 70's then I would have had no club to support. I think it's actually rather comforting in that despite travelling thousands of miles across the globe Saints still mean so much to the Ex Pats out there. My missus reckons she couldn't move abroad because sahe would hate to leave her mum, whereas my issue was leaving Saints!!!!!! Word.

captainchris Posted 15 January, 2011 Share Posted 15 January, 2011 why do you mention both subjects in the same context ?? Whilst Punch is very average but wanted a bit by some managers. Pulis is evidently not required by anyone so how can we get shot of him????? It's not at all ridiculous it's life - we are stuck with Pulis............................Let Punch go I say, he cant hit a barn door and some of his Millwall 'goals' were very fortuitous. He is not good enough for us and Pulis doesn't play for the first team anyway! I 'm sure we would get rid if we could - obvioiusly........

Turkish Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Ryan Harley - perhaps not as good as Lallana, but as good as Puncheon IMO. So why on earth would a player who is good enough for the Championship come to a League one side as a "cover" player? Lets not forget, first we dont know how long Lallana is out for and secondly it is only around 6-8 weeks worst case, if totally unfounded rumours are true. His career isn't over he isn't out for a year or more, 6-8 weeks is not a particularly long time, so no decent player of the standard we want will want to come here as a cover player. Some of you lot need to get a dose of reality at the sort of players who will join a league one side to bench warm. Of course if you are talking about buying 20 odd good players to play in a squad rotation system, then that is a different matter all together.
