Saint Charlie Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Marian Pahars appointed as the new Manager of Latvia's most successful club Skonto Riga. Will be interesting to see how he does.
Deppo Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Great stuff! They will now be my 11th favourite team. Most people in the playground will never have heard of them.
Sheaf Saint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Isn't that the club we signed him from? Best of luck anyway Marian. Once of my favourite ever players at Saints. A joy to watch and such a shame that his injury record deprived us of even more. Will never forget that magical goal against the Skates, and getting out of his sick bed to play - and score - in the final game against Everton in the great escape season.
Deppo Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 At last; an excuse to go to Riga again. Micky Adams has just become manager of Sheffield United.
corsacar saint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Lets all us Saints fans, wish Marian all the best, with this post. [As I mentioned on another thread a while ago,the latvian manager of the car wash in town[Yuri],is a good friend of Marians, and speaks to him on a quite regular basis. Next time I go in there,I will ask him how things are going].
Danbert Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Micky Adams has just become manager of Sheffield United. That cracked me up
Victor Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Awesome contests Marian. What? Is this translated from Latvian?
paulwantsapint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Would love to watch a pre season match between NA saints & Marian Pahars Riga even more if the little fella came on as late sub
beatlesaint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 The very best of luck to you Marian. A pre-season friendly at St Marys would be a great way for Pahars to come back to Southampton.
Draino76 Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 I suggested a friendly in the comments section. (1st) Just checking if I can get a Megatrain up to see my Micky.
Huffton Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 A friendly against them (Ted Bates Trophy?) would be amazing. Next time Nic takes a load of you out on the razzle could someone bring up the idea?
sammysaint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Should of do a OGS at utd and be are res manager or a coach pure legend hope he does well.
St Steve Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Marian is probably fed up with watching Saints from the sidelines, did enough of that when he was with us.
farawaysaint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 All time great I love the little Latvian and wish him all the best.
Fan The Flames Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 All I want for Christmas is a Skonta Riga away kit.
Littlelat17 Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Think my username expresses how much I loved him
Chicken With A Banjo Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 See he's managing a bald Andrejs Perepļotkins there now.
jawillwill Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Think my username expresses how much I loved him Which other little latvians made it into your top 16?
Deppo Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Think my username expresses how much I loved him That's why I chose mine too! I love little Marian!
CWD Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Still have a shirt with his name on it somewhere! Good luck Marian!
hypochondriac Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Great stuff! They will now be my 11th favourite team. Most people in the playground will never have heard of them. Hilarious.
musesaint Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 We cried when Marian left ...his last walk round the pitch at SMS at the end of the season
Kevtherev Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Marian Pahars appointed as the new Manager of Latvia's most successful club Skonto Riga. Will be interesting to see how he does. Remember we used to play foreign oppostion for the Ted Bates trophy, time for Marian to return to SMS?
Alain Perrin Posted 13 January, 2011 Posted 13 January, 2011 Good luck Marian you workshy parasite. It is a shame my memory of you is tarnished by your 'injury' record. The second time the club really needed you (first being Dellhurst etc.) you went missing. I'm sorry, because you were a great player, but with no bottle.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 Hope he does well there. Never struck me as management material though, especially as he probably still looks about 12.

I'm tolerant of pretty much any view but really? Great escape slipped your mind?
Viking Warrior Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 Good Luck Marian ps he will probably get injured though giving the team talk. lol
shane d Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 What an a...hole you are, Perrin. I'l second that!
Petersfield Saint Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 Good Luck Marian ps he will probably get injured though giving the team talk. lol Loved little Marian but this made me lol
Alain Perrin Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 I'm tolerant of pretty much any view but really? Great escape slipped your mind? I certainly haven't forgotten the Great Escape - that's what I meant by Dellhurst - in fact, I still have my Fez! Pahars role was crucial no doubt. Don't get me wrong, Pahars was a legend in the early years at Saints, but for me it was soured by the last five years where, by all accounts he was a sick note. Read Strachan's opinions - "Pahars has also caught every virus going except a computer virus and he is probably working on that even now.", "Pahars has another bug. I'm sure he goes round all the local hospitals trying to find them. I've never known anyone like him." Although he did have some genuine injuries (hernia, ankle etc.) the view seems to be he was a bit of a shirker. When we were relegated Pahars had a real chance against weaker opposition to spring us back again. Instead he went missing. Missing when we needed him most. So my view is that he sucked wages out of the club for five years with little return (at a time when we couldn't afford it), all the while we were hoping he'd come back this time; no this time; no definitely this time.... Save the Pompey goal in 2003, basically Pahars was great in 1999 - 2001. From then until 2006 though, he was absent. Like I say, I disagree with him being a legend because for me, he didn't try hard enough.

This guy cared more about Saints than 5 other players put together (with very few exceptions in the past 20 years). Sucked wages out? Definitely his fault that he got scythed down in pre-season. The club has insurance to cover long term injuries. Pahars wanted to carry on on a pay as you play deal (he might have struggled to eat) but our far-sighted manager at the time did not want to even discuss it. Scored at the Bridge, Anfield, Old Trafford...... Not a legend? Idiot

Absolutely brilliant for us for three seasons but then sat back and enjoyed life at our expense.
Thedelldays Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 you dont have to be at a club for years to be a legend... he will always be one of my all time favourite saints players....for what ever reason his little impact on our club will never be forgotton by me
Nutwood2 Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 A young lady from Riga has just knitted me an amazingly long Saints scarf. Reckon it might be the longest ever! Thought I'd share that with you. Brilliant news. All the very best with that, Marian. You're a legend!
sperm_john Posted 14 January, 2011 Posted 14 January, 2011 I keep reading the thread title as 'Good Luck Martian' ....aliens?!?
niceandfriendly Posted 15 January, 2011 Posted 15 January, 2011 (edited) Just read about this news. I'm absolutely delighted. There's a good article about his new role from Saints fan Chris Mann here http://equaliserfootball.com/2011/01/13/pahars-skonto/#more-3076 It explains his situation nicely. Imagine how wonderful it would be for Marian to become a hugely successful manager, who goes onto manage us to success. Sweeeeeeeet. Edited 15 January, 2011 by niceandfriendly
