This shirt is the most popular in our history as far as I am aware. I think it's our best ever shirt, however MODERN history to me dicates saints as red & white stripes, and I would like that to continue. I think you can do a bit more with stripes than a sash, which would get a bit stale.

Having said that take a look at Umbro's new designs for peru-The best bit of them for me is that they are part cotton rather than 100% nylon (like the england & city shirts) and feel much nicer and that bit more classy.

I think the sash looks utter crap. Irrespective of whether we should be wearing it or not (obviously we shouldn't be), it look gash. No team looks good in any sort of sash kit. They are not popular because they are aesthetically displeasing, they look lob sided, and our kit is basically white from anything other than straight on.

Teams of substance don't change their traditional kit. Get back to the tradition kit and ignore this bastard child of a strip.

I think you will find it hard to name a club that hasn't made significant changes to its kit.

If you were a Saints fan in the 1950's how would you have felt when they changed the shorts and socks from the blue Saints had used for the previous 65 years?

If that was the case we would never have had stripes in the first place. The attitude would have been 'nah, stick with the Sash.'

The Skates would be funnier though, wish they were still in Salmon pink.

Exactly. Docker-P's logic is completely flawed. He undermines his own argument.

Any idea when Crystal Palace's new claret and blue kit is out?

I'm a bit worried as well, I really like the unique sash and having been all for a "one-season" kit I think we should now have at least one "sash" kit a season, even if it's a yellow/blue or black/red away kit.

Sorry bit for me the red and white stripes win every time. This is the first time ive never owned a current home shirt.

I cant wait till the begining of the new season when (hopefully),we can resume our place in the Champoinship while wearing a decent red and white striped shirt.

Says who? Your argument is purely subjective, and contradicted by this poll.

Plus, loads of big teams have changed their kit, often dramatically. Do you remember the 80s and 90s?

Back to stripes please. Let's keep the sash a special one season thing. Plus, stripes are slimming. :)

lol, I didnt have you pegged as a fat bastard :)

It is unique, and I love the kit, but we are Saints and we are red and white stripes. That is our history.

My thoughts entirely. It represents the 125th anniversary season only- we are red and white stripes.

Posted

The sash is fine this season especially without an advert plastered over the front off it.

If we are going to have a shirt sponsor next season then I would vote for a return to stripes; however if not then I would be quite happy with either sash or stripes (though the later is my preference).

Amazing that when they were out of stock earlier in the season, someone said that they had placed the order for the whole season based on previous shirt sales: a whole seasons sales of shirts had been sold in weeks. With that in mind I think that you could say that this years shirt has been a resounding success.

That said Stripes are Southampton Football Club................. But being Peru for a season has made for a pleasant change. Predominantly white also makes our team look much bigger on the pitch.

Saints wore a red and white sash kit 51 years before Peru did! Now that is history... :)

Love the sash so much I want to keep it.

Makes us unique. Attached to red and white stripes but very generic.

No one else has the sash (except Peru, and I don't mind that)

Posted

I'd like to keep the sash as long as nobody else has it. It's classy and distinct.

Other teams have got stripes, and they're crap. It's not like our normal kit is the same as Barcelona's. Cortese speaks of wanting to develop a "Southampton style" that'll be acknowledged in the footballing world. I'm on-board with that. It'll be far easier to achieve if we stand out with distinct branding, far harder if we turn up to games dressed as Stoke.

Like Matthew Le God says, the sash is part of Saints history. It's just not part of most living fans' history, until now, a season in which we're finally on the up and destroying teams. So next year, I'd rather us play in our promotion kit rather than an interpretation of the kit we got relegated in. Twice.

Best times in my lifetime?

FA Cup final - stripes?

Keegan era - stripes?

Worst

Relegations x2 - stripes?

Back to good times winning league 1 - stripes?

Not fussed if never see us in stripes again!

If I had been around the table 120 odd years ago when a change from the sash to squares was proposed i would have voted against it. So no i have not undermined my own argument.

Put everything aside about aesthetics and it being a white kit, my bottom line argument is red and white stripes is our traditional kit and has been for all but a handful of our 125 years and we should not through tradition aside so readily.

And we look like a bunch of ******* Beauty Pageant contestants in it.

Most arguments are purely subjective, and not contradicted by the poll where only 40% like it.

So what about Saints wearing blue shorts and socks for 52% of their existence? Should the kit in 2011/12 have blue shorts and blue socks?

I don't think it was as much as 52% of the time, but as the dark blue looked pretty much like black it's a much much smaller issue.

What I meant was for the first 65 years of the clubs history (1885 to 1950) they didn't have black shorts or white/red socks. 65 years is 52% of its history!

Blue socks are very different to red/white socks. The blue used wasn't that dark so not similar to black shorts.

Your argument is fundamentally flawed...

Bobby Stokes didn't score in red and white stripes (appreciate all clubs have away kit) but more relevant Keegan . Channon etc played our most famous football without stripes

I beg your pardon???? Channon played his most famous football not in stripes ????????

Mike Channon played his first game for Saints in 1966, and until he left the first time in 1977 played in nothing but red and white stripes.

Keegan played in a Red and White stripe (sic) shirt.

Indeed. The poll results are scarily close though. I have to say it is the one bad aspect of so far a great season to see us playing in this sub-Crystal Palace kit. It is simply embarassing. Even the penguin and raspberry ripple versions of the stripes were better than this! Saints play in red and white stripes and long may it be so, although the black and red kit from Tuesday night makes a very good change kit. At least the memory of Tuesday night's glorious thrashing wont be tarnished by that awful awful sashed kit.

No, the poll is not 'do you like the sash kit?'

I voted no in this poll because I don't want to lose our stripes forever, but the sash kit is awesome and I think our most popular ever if going by shirt sales alone.

Your passionate hatred of it is quite bizarre actually. Fair enough, not everyone likes it, but I'd be concerned by your vitriolic comments on here if I was you. It's just a shirt!!

Did you by any chance finish 2nd in the "Design the shirt competition" which we never heard about and have been left feeling bitter?

You're arguing about whether our football t-shirt has a diagonal red stripe or lots of vertical ones.

Damn right. I can think of no more pressing issue in football or life. Tackling the budget deficit? Pah. Cameroon and Milliband need to wise up and tackle this Sash issue before it spreads.

Crystal Palace first wore their sash kit in 1976.

Docker, we have got the hint you dont like it. FFS shut up. It was our FIRST kit, so they went with it. If they had gone with a special striped kit, you would have moaned that there was no thought put into it.

You disagree with everything the club do and i am bored sh*tless of reading it.

1 year, back to our origin. Deal with it.

Oh FFS no I wouldn't. Read the bloody posts. And point me to where I disagree with everything the club does you tedious little scrote.

If people would stop starting threads about the kit and then bumbing them, I wouldn't comment on them. When was the last time I started a thread on this.

Keegan didn't play in a traditional red and white stripe kit - no more "traditional" saints than current one

Love the sash, love the stripes. So which to go for???

I think the thing that may tip it for me is: a neutral mate of mine having come to a couple of home games with me thought the sash kit looked really good but also thought it made the team look much bigger than the opposition (hence possibly giving us a bit of Psychological advantage), I think this is probably because the kit has a rugby feel about it. Well I am an egg chaser as well so it has to be the sash......oh shhhiiitttte but can we go away from the stipes...fffuuuccck I don't know.

Can we have stripes with a sash across them??

Very suprised by the results. The sash has really caught on.

I am in the sash camp too; I am bored of the stripes. However, I dont like the combination with white shorts and black socks. Would like to see red shorts and white socks.. I would also change the 2nd kit to a sash kit; yellow shirt, blue sash, blue shorts, yellow socks.
