I think it is truely epic that saints are doing so well compared with the past five year (the lowe era *shudder*). But I don't want people forgetting the man who saved us. Yes there may have been other people who may have been willing but he actually did. Because of this (and some of you may disagree with me) but I think that a markus liebherr chant would maybe be fitting. Your thoughts?

You could hear the one markus liebherr chant tonight but like the other grounds it has been sung, it never seems to catch on with any gusto.

The big man deserves more.

I dont think any Saints fan with half an ounce of sense will ever forget that if it wasn't for Markus, and Nicola for that matter, that nights like this would never have happened.

Mate, Nice sentiments, but I can assure you that no true Saint will ever forget what Markus did for our club. never!

We should use this forum as a way of drum up support..

Please mods.. Make it a sticky and a simple poll... Would you like a stand named after markus.. Yes/no

IMO it's the only fitting tribute

People power. Let's do it.

I asked the admin earlier this season for a poll on the best way to commemorate ML and never even got the decency of a reply. We should have a poll on what fans feel is the best way, and then send it to NC.

Totally agree..

We all know people at the club read this place

Agree.

Did they ask you to put a message on the "Forum Suggestions" forum instead?

And could be combined with suggestions on the other thread to turn the chappell into the kop...you wouldn't want any old stand to be named after him.

I think ML was probably a really great guy. But was he our 'savior' ? No. Would we have gone bust if he hadn't bought us ? The evidence strongly suggests not.

Nope. No answer at all despite addressing to four admins /mods and a follow up.

The evidence strongly suggests we would be owned by, if anyone, dinlos instead though.

Lol

No. Micky an his mates would be using us to pay his mortgages and we would still be happy to just survive

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted ML bought us when he did. But it was a wise investment. To listen to some posters on here would be to believe ML had Red and White blood cursing through his veins from birth. He bought us as an investment (nothing wrong with that) and very sadly died a few months later. I don't want to belittle him or his memory at all, but in the history of SFC it's only a foot note.

"Only a footnote"... mental.

err, actually, listening to Cortese's and others accounts of Liebherr since his passing, it would appear he did have red and white running through he veins. He fell in love with this club. His passion for us was immense, and he even planned for our future after he had gone. That shows what a man he was.

But there you go, that proves not everyone has the same opinion. Mods, Poll please!!!

Should Southampton Football club rename a stand at St Mary's after Markus Liebherr? Yes or no.

What if 20k Saints fans were all singing it on live TV against the mancs.

Lets do it

this and a stand! should hear his name being sung more. we may have been bought by others but never can i believe we would have had this security / these ambitions

I think you should think a little more before speaking sometimes. There is nthing wrong with your opinion but for some there is still a raw emotion surrounding ML!!

What most seem to pass over for their own reasons is that Saints fans owe Marcus AND Nicola an equal debt of gratitude.

For me naming a stand after him, from little snippets you got from his time here would not actually sit comfortably with him - and actually I suspect his family.

Without doubt we should commemorate his life and the part he has AND his money IS and will continue to do so in the development and success of our club over the next few years. But I feel a far more subtle or in actual fact bigger gesture is required. Naming a stand isnt actually good enough imo!!

I doubt that anything will happen in terms of that type of thing for a while, and I would be happy to wait to what if anything happen in terms of St Marys development or a new stadium entirely. Either way I would be happy for the stadium to be called the Leibherr Arena or similar.

Until that point perhaps a few other things could happen, such as a refresh of the pictures in the concourses with some pictures of Marcus in each one - not all of him - but at least one of him in each including a picture of him with his camera at WEmbley!!

Maybe also the club could look at creating some type of " 4 team competition" for the first team during pre-season which is perhaps called the Marcus Leibherr Tournament and whereby the Ted Bates Trophy is awarded.

Alternatively we could create our own "Toulon Tournament" for Under 21 teams OR we have them running alongside each other...even better!!We could have a whole feast of football in the last week or two weeks before the season starts wherby U21 play during the week and then Friday/Saturday/Sunday the first teams play!!

The whole event could be called the Saints Festival of Football.

You chum, are a total Pratt. Opinions are valid, but you are just something else. A bitter man who really never, ever has a good thing to say.

Glory, glory Markus Liebherr,

And the Saints go marching OOONNN.

I think Markus would have wanted to be remembered with a subtle gesture - a stand/suite renaming or statue would not suit his character. I would like to see a memorial garden built outside the Kingsland, to include the bench that was being discussed on here shortly after his death.

you may feel that, I don't, but history of the club is not as important as its future. An extremely positive one because of Markus compared to possibly none without him.

Absolutely. Markus's money. Nicola's vision.

This really is quite wrong. You only have to look down the unfashionable end of the M27 to see what getting the wrong owner (or owners in their case) can mean. ML`s actions have given us a team that we can be proud of - given us our pride back. He has given us a well structure club with hopefully a stable and secure future. For the first time in many years (including time in the Prem) we are going to games with high expectations and coming away with smiles on our faces. We can look to the future with excitement because of what he has done for our club, and to belittle that by calling him a footnote is really not understanding the quite monumental turnaround in the clubs fortunes. I suppose that MLT, for example, is also only a footnote. After all he only played for a handful of years out of 125!

I think we should have a tribute thread that is permanently stuck - so everyone always sees it just as a gentle reminder!

He should probably have his picture in the forum logo at the top too! He's certainly a Saints legend =]

Usually agree with you on most things mate.... But not this. Disagree 100%

Love Leibherr...

I voted No.

Sounds like a very mean-spirited thing to do, but I think a lasting tribute should be decided in talks with the family, not the fans. From what I've read, Markus was a very private, modest and quiet man. I'd really like the decision to be taken by Cortese and the Liebherrs.

It would be rather awkward if the fans were loudly demanding a particular tribute that wasn't considered appropriate by the family.

Although his time with us was tragically limited, it was much more than a footnote!
