Tac-tics Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Evening folks, basically looking at surprising the gf by taking her to Paris in July for a long weekend. Just wondering any tips or advice on bookings, what to do (bearing in mind we are 20), hotels. any input will help! ta muchly!
Smirking_Saint Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Go to the Latin Quarter where the moulin rouge is, Your a young un too so be careful if you wander just off the usual touristy parts as you will get pressured into buying things. If people approach you with what looks like an arm band then grab the missus and make sure they don't get ahold of your arm, if they tie it on they demand 20 Euros and get pretty f*cking angry when you tell them to f*ck off. Whitey Grandad Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 I go there very often for my business. It all depends what floats your boat. In July they'll all be looking forward to their August break when it almost shuts down. Meals out, bateaux mouches dinner on the Seine, top floor of the Museé d'Orsay for all the impressionists. Montmartre and Place du Tertre, Louvre if you must. Pompidou centre (not my style). What type of hotel do you like? Central and noisy or up a back street and quiet? How are you going? It's a long time since I used them but Bridge Travel in Broxbourne might still be going. There are several operators who will do a deal for flights & hotel, many from Southampton. Don't forget that Flybe now operate to Orly instead of Roissy. I usually drive when I go, overnight from Portsmouth to Ouistreham or Le Havre then about 150 or 120 miles by motorway. Do the business then lunch in Paris and afternoon boat or up to Trouville for lunch in Les Vapeurs. Let us know when you have more specific details and I will try to get some recommendations for you. It's one of my favourite cities, you'll have a great time. I'm hoping to take my 91-year old mother in April.
buctootim Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 This is the most traditionally French place I know. Edith Piaf songs, accordions and old time music acts. Small intimate and fascinating if you want something authentic and can speak a bit of French. http://www.au-lapin-agile.com/
LVSaint Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 Go to the Latin Quarter where the moulin rouge is, Non! Moulin Rouge is up near Montmartre. Latin Quarter is down in the 5th and 6th arr. For hotels, near the river in the 5th/6th are good places to stay if you're looking for a perfect central location and don't mind a touristy trap area (St Germain square) and some noise...great atmosphere though. For central but quieter, the Marais on the other side of the river is perfect but anywhere in the 5th or 6th further south is fine too. Cheaper hotels will be offered in the outer laying areas of the city but you will need to rely more on public transport to get around. What to do? Anything you want, there's something for everyone. saint_bert Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 I thought this was about a sequel to the first Paris Hilton film.
Special K Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 I've found that booking travel and hotels direct is the best way as you get to select what you want. Eurostar is generally the best way to go as it takes you to a more central place than the airports. Book early and get a good deal (plus the new-ish St Pancras station refurb is excellent). As for Hotels. there are some real gems to be found. It's worth spending a bit of time on tripadvisor.co.uk to get some reviews. I've always found it better to book direct - most hotels have an english page on their website if you are unfamiliar with the lingo. If you are going in July, make a note that Bastille Day on the 14th gets very busy. They do some cracking little jazz festivals in the summertime (if that's your thing), but if it's your first time there, just get a decent guidebook before you go and earmark a few things to do. It's not a place to do in a weekend! One little tip - you can buy your metro tickets before you go and this saves a bit of flustering around if you are new to the place - http://www.helloparis.co.uk/Getting-around-paris/3-paris-metro-tickets.html?gclid=COiBh4vFtKYCFQGDDgodSmFNFw may help. Whitey Grandad Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 Don't forget that Metro tickets can also be used on the buses and you'll see more as you get around. I have an app on my phone which can be useful http://www.metroparisiphone.com/index_en.html It gives you routing information as well as maps but you will want to turn off data roaming. Moulin Rouge is in Pigalle and it is bloody rough,if you are up for prossies and porn then fine. I stayed in Monmarte which is right by the Bassillica Sacre cour (sp),it is vibrant and an exciting place and you can get the Funnicular back down into the streets of paris itself. Gemmel Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 I was in Paris, just before Christmas.... A long day of meetings were made easier at the thought of some fine French cuisine and culture. We got taken to a Kosher Indian restaurant :scared:
swannymere Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 It can be bloody expensive, we had some friends from Brasil doing a small european tour and they found Paris more expensive than Dublin or London, it is a great city but you do have to hunt around for non-touristy bits. rallyboy Posted 12 January, 2011 Share Posted 12 January, 2011 Was there a few weeks back, there are some cheap hotels but it's a lottery on quality, Eurostar was good, saves messing about with travel from the airports that pretend to be near Paris - you can get some cheap ES deals if you book well ahead I think. Mind the dog muck, its everywhere!

Saintmike666 Posted 13 January, 2011 Share Posted 13 January, 2011 hi mate, i've just got back from a long weekend in pairs with my girlfriend (were both 19), we stayed just before Christmas and we stayed in the Latin quarter which is where the students are so theres lots of bars/restaurants and close to all the tourist locations and from the hotel we stayed in the notre dame is about a 5minute walk, we stayed in a hotel called hotel claude bernard which was pretty basic but had everything we needed and close to the metro station so could get anywhere easily. the hotel is especially good if your on a budget...if you book the eurostar in advance, and are flexible on times you can get a return trip for around £70 each... i would also recommend bateaux river cruise, theres a dinner cruise which you travel up the sienne with a very good meal and great service... hope that helps, if you wanna ask anything feel free to pm, i share this account with my brother as it wont let me make one with my email address so if it takes a while to reply thats why. Redondo Saint Posted 13 January, 2011 Share Posted 13 January, 2011 I recommend this hotel for a long weekend. It's close to most things and relatively inexpensive. http://www.mercure.com/gb/hotel-2053-mercure-paris-arc-de-triomphe-wagram/index.shtml
