Saint George Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 In the last 24 hours we have had all 3 parties banging about tax cuts to try & give us more money to pump into the economy. Now why dont the Government force the robbing Oil companies / energy companies to reduce their prices thus giving us our tax cuts. Easy  Now these companies get away with it, God only knows (well I do know - corrupt rip-off Britain ) Why should private companies pay for 'your' tax cuts? They're already selling petrol at a near loss as it is...How about you ask your government to reduce some of the 300% tax they put on the sale of petrol and give you your tax cuts that way ? NuLabour only have plans to force the cost of energy 'up' So dont hold your breath for any recuctions in that direction.

I miss him when he doesn't post though... Very little of that profit is made from selling gas at filling stations...they're pretty much selling it at cost as it is. Oil is a base component of hundreds, if not thousands of products. It's also a extremely high risk/high investment industry......Without the possibility of high profits to offset the risk, Oil companies wouldn't even exist......Something many Socialist's don't seem to be able to get their head around.....And some would seem to be even be happy with that idea Despite all that, I can buy gas over here from both BP and Shell at a very reasonable price....About 1/2 the price of a gallon of milk and a little less than gallon of 'brand' name water Most Britons (can i still use that word?)'chose' to pay 300% tax on gas.....To blame the Oil companies for the subsiquent high cost is laughable.....Even if Shell sold gas at their forecourt for 1 pence a litre it would still cost you around 35p a litre to put it in your car.....Go figure

RoswellSaint Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Filled up for $1.95 a gallon this morning......Thats a drop of over a dollar a gallon in a month........How low can it go? Not much according to the Wall Street Journal, maybe another 10 cents or so is all that's expected in the next few months. HTH I guess our good friend, Saint George, has got over his loss last week. Johnny Bognor Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Fuel tax is 70% - not 300% FFS! http://www.petrolprices.com/fuel-tax.html 63p tax of the total pump price 95p is 70% of the total paid. However, the fuel cost is 32p and the tax is 63p, therefore levy on the cost of fuel is actually 200% (i.e. the tax is twice as much as the cost of fuel). You can dress it up however you like, but Gordon Clown (see what I did there?) is screwing the tax payer rotten!

Ponty Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Did you read the article in full - and see that the fuel escalator was introduced by one Margaret Thatcher? The fuel tax escalator (as we know it) was introduced in 1998. The original version was INCREASED during Labour's first year in charge. I like you BTF but your one-sidedness about The labour Party makes me want to vomit. Labour had introduced over 100 significant tax increases in their first ten years alone. I like you too, Ponty but please do me the honour of reading the article I provided the link for. It was produced by Petrolprices.com - hardly a bastion of socialism. For ease of reference, here is the salient point: "Fuel tax in the UK is constantly changing and has risen steadily over the last 15 years. Between 1993 and 1999 there was a rapid increase with duties on fuel increasing by 3% above inflation. This was due to a major change in petrol taxation in 1993 when the Conservatives introduced the Fuel Price 'escalator'. This was a way of the government making money and also to help protect the environment by discouraging people from using their cars."

Ponty Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Thatcher had been out of power for three years when it was introduced, and the Tories out of power altogether for the final two years of that. I fail to see where the blame lies on Mrs Thatch's shoulders.

OLYMPIC Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 Would that be the same waiting lists that have had the way patients appear on them altered to keep figures down. But as this is a fuel thread unleaded at my local garage is back down to 92.9p a litre which is almost the price it was before the stupid increases. bridge too far Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 We have had to have both Social Services and the NHS involved in the care of my mother this week. I have nothing but praise for their immediate and considerate action in helping a very poorly, fragile old lady.

St Landrew Posted 13 November, 2008 Share Posted 13 November, 2008 Unleaded petrol is the equivalent of 37 pence a litre here in NZ Now if that isn't an argument for planning a road trip, then I don't know what is. At 37 pence a litre, a person could climb aboard a nice 600cc-1000cc motorcycle and cruise the NZ highways from one end of the country to the other. In the summer, of course. It got mighty cold in Gore, NZ. What's the bike hire cost..?
