St_Tel49 Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 A team needs two quality keepers and we have them. Bart is a good keeper but Kelv is still No 1 for me. I don't have a problem if Bart gets the Man U call because it is a cup game.
OldNick Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 It is hell of a risk dropping KD and putting Bart in. If you do, you knock KD's confidence and then if Bart messes up you bring back a keeper who has been kicked. Derry has never had a good thing to say about KD and is under the impression that every other keeper in the league is better. Crucial 6 pointer , penalty save that saved us a point and stopped out major rivals getting 3 more points....at the end of the season that point saved could be very important. Read the match reports over the last few seasons and see the amount of 'fantastic save Davis' against the amount of times 'Davis howler' has been posted. If Bart plays then i will support him, but I still have flashbacks to the Exeter game in the league cup a couple of seasons ago and experiencing the worst and most comical goalkeeping display by a Saints keeper.....and Ive seen a few over 40 years of watching
thesaint sfc Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Bart IMO is a better shot stopper than Kelvin and has absolutely bags of potential. He is however really poor at distributing the ball - and I don't think he commands his box as well as Kelvin. Kelvin for number one - should always be first choice. Bart has absolutely bags of potential though and I really look forward to when he gets a run in the team. If he got a run in the team I think he could be an improvement on Kelvin. PaulGilchrist_76 Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 We are vey fortunate to have two excellent keepers at League 1 level. I think Bart deserves to play more games but this will only happen if Kelvin is injured or suffers a major loss of form. I feel sorry for Bart and I reckon he will eventually get fed up with the situation and leave for pastures new. Sad, really.
niceandfriendly Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 and I don't think he commands his box as well as Kelvin. Blimey, Bart must be bad! That's one of Kelvins biggest weaknesses IMO.
Super_Uwe Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 I'd love Bart to be our first choice one day as he has time on his side, but as I said on the similar thread the other days, SIX managers (including GB) have not put their faith in him as the number one. To me that suggests there is something lacking; whether it's mental or physical, I don't know, but when he first joined he showed everyone that he had great ability and yet has only played a handful of times since. I personally believe if he had not got that knee injury back at Newcastle in 05/06 then he would be our number one. All ifs and buts I know, but he showed enough ability back then to make me think we'd struck gold for something like £50k. But somewhere along the line he has been unable to prove that he deserves to be ahead of KD. After five seasons of KD as the number one, you have to wonder when Bart is going to make his move... southbourne saint Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Seems he is playing at Oldham tonight as KD and Chaplow have been recalled.
david in sweden Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Forecast is good at Reserve team level - Bart has more potential BUT ...we don't have a Reserve side anymore..what are you trying to say ?
david in sweden Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 (edited) Bart's inadequacies were quite obvious last time he had a run in the first team. Good shot stopper, needs maturity before he is a number 1. Keepers take time to develop. I'm always a bit suspicious of "young keepers" they have "too much " still to learn. A striker may be finished by 30, a midfielder at 33 ..defenders can go to 35/6 but goalies start to mature at 30. (Van der Sar is past 40 still a top name.) My fan days go back to the 1960's with 30 plussers like Ron Reynolds 32, and John Hollowbread 31 (when joining). Peter Shilton was 33 when he joined us, and later played in World Cup when past 40. His successor Tim Flowers never fulfilled his real potential (even after 251 games) before he moved to Blackburn (then 27) and got the England shirt afterwards. Beasant was 34 and Burridge was 36 when they came and, Paul Jones was past 30 when he joined us the now legendary Antti Niemi (IMHO second only to Shilton ) ..was also over 30. Right now ..Kelvin is King. Bart has lots of potential, but either he ..or Forecast need a loan-out (though not this season), and some games under their belts. Bart should wait his time, he still has lots to learn... like not hanging a red towel in the side netting and provide the opposition with a natural target..as happened in one game. Don't get me wrong I think he's got great potential, ....but I don't see him playing v. Man Utd. Do you? PinkScarf Posted 11 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2011 I think on risk that Bart will not play against Man Utd and that may be the last we see of him this season with Kelvin playing in goal for all the rest of the League Games. The general consensus is that this is a good thing. My point was that Bart was good last year in JPT - also kept a clean sheet against Blackpool and I would have liked to have seen him selected for some Away Games where there is more likelihood of Saints conceding - he is a good shot stopper. Whether that is the right decision - no-one has any way of proving one way or another. Let's keep a clean sheet tonight.
