In the Guardian this morning (yes I know I am sorry but it is the only one left I trust just a little) the whole write up surrounds Holloway's infatuation with Dalglish with one line on Lallana at the end. Absolutely laughable and so indicative of how myopic the media are these days to the big 4. How can you work a story re the new Liverpool manager into a Saints v Blackpool? Go read the Guardian to find out and weep.

Go read the Guardian to find out and weep. TBF, I did read some half-decent reports in yesterday papers (Mail/Telegraph). Admittedly they did make a bit deal of Holloways bleatings, but gave a fair asseement of the game saying how one-sided it was, unlike ITV whose "highlights" gave the impression that it was 50/50.

I started losing my pretentions about such issues with the 1979 League Cup Final, where I really wept at just how biased to Forest the radio commentators on the BBC were (I was only 9..)

The paper version in yesterday's Observer did have a sub headline saying Saints deserved the victory and the report had none of the Liverpool rubbish in it but it still had the barest mention of Guly's goal which was arguably the goal of the round.

Now there's a decent newspaper... ;-) Didn't anyone figure out that ...our " reserves " were better than their "reserves" ? Holloway decided to give in before they started, and most likely had his " defeated speech " already. His criticism the home crowd was pathetic. What did he expect? Guess he thought that if his " first team " were defeated it would harm their confidence - Ask Pardew ?

Also today there was a large write up about the 4th round draw with a great picture of Guly scoring his goal But yes, compared to the other games it was not as in depth and kept NA's comments to mostly wanting to play Liverpool next

Got a mate who works for them and the workforce can pretty much come and go as they please, so unsurprising they don't have enough people to cover every FA Cup game.
Brussels Saint Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 It annoys me a bit that all the reports I read, focused on Blackpool only putting out 2nd string players and question if this was an "upset" They made 9 changes, we made 8 from the last league games and not one report gives us credit for what essentially was a squad v squad game.
Doctoroncall Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 The guardian now has a Football League blog, which has been a welcome addition, although one of the last entries was on the FA Cup which talked more about lost its magic because of PL teams fielding weaken sides than the chance for FL clubs to shine! The observer report isn't great but you can put in a comment (if registered).

I know we made a similar number of starting line-up changes to Blackpool but, to give the British press a smidgen of credit, isn't there is a subtle difference between the players we left out of the starting line up and Blackpool's? As I understanding it, Blackpool played a team of players that have largely not played week in week out whereas the players we brought in were players who have seen relatively regular action during the course of the season. In other words, we were simply rotating a squad of 'regulars' whereas Blackpool picked a team of players who rarely get a look in? Don't get me wrong, I still think the media are under-valuing our victory but I can see what they're getting at.

Special K Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Monday newspaper reports hardly focus on reporting the events of a saturday game; they are more likely to focus in on one aspect surrounding the game with a small reference to the events on the pitch. But it's the same for most clubs, except the big name Prem clubs.

Yes, fair play to the Sun who, after our little tet-a-tet earlier in the season, are giving us our due for a change, and especially with regard to more positive reporting. Perhaps they are looking to the future as well, and want 'IN' at the early stage for when we are in the Champions League And Also there was no mention of RITCHIE LAMBERT or JULIE DEL PRADO, which was good. I read the Mail and I think that they just mentioned that we had made eight changes in response to Holloways bleatings about them making nine changes. I certainly never saw any mention of NA disrespecting the cup. As I said in an earlier post I thought that the Mail (and the Telegraph) had quite good balanced reports yesterday.

They couldn't afford to keep that many sports journos on staff. They have a few staff then they buy in reports from freelancers as well. I don't expect the sports editor got over excited about a weakened third division team playing a weakened Prem club. The Guardian has never gone in for a large sports covereage going instead for quality over quantity. Times were hard when I was there 10 years ago and I expect they are even harder now so they will pick and chose who gets the (limited) space. For the record I used to work in Circulation and we were always badgering the editor for an expanded sport coverage.
