Saints vs Manchester Utd - 4th Round FA Cup Draw

Living in Hampshire, I have plenty of Man Utd supporting mates, so I hope we can give them a run for their money.

One such Surrey-born, Hampshire-living mate thought that Old Trafford was situated in Liverpool.

Seriously? ffs

I live with three Man Utd fans at Uni, 2 of which are from Hertfordshire. I would love it if we got a result, they would never ever live it down

I attended the Charity Shield last August as a neutral.

The Man U fans were utterly obnoxious ****s, trying to cause no end of trouble. They all seemed to be variations on the Liam Gallagher Manc theme.

****ing love it if we beat them.

I thought all real Mancs support city and only southerners supported Man U:?. Mind you I imagine if we had been the top club in England (agrubably Europe at times too) for as long as Manure have we'd have our fair share of obnoxious ****s too.

Taken from Man U's official page

"Reds face Saints

United have been drawn away to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Reds overcame Liverpool on Sunday to book their place in round four, while Southampton, who are currently third in League One, earned their spot with a 2-0 win over Blackpool at St. Mary's on Saturday.

Sir Alex gave his reaction to MUTV straight after the draw and said he is looking forward to the tie. "They had a great result yesterday against Blackpool.

"It's a nice stadium and good pitch and they're playing well. It's a tie we're looking forward to."

The last meeting between the two sides came in the FA Cup third round in January 2009. United ran out 3-0 winners at St. Mary's that day thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani and Darron Gibson.

The Reds have played Southampton 14 times in the Cup, winning eight, drawing five and losing just once. That one defeat, of course, came in the 1976 FA Cup final at Wembley.

This latest meeting will be played over the weekend of 29 and 30 January"

We beat them on Penalties as well at their place, the first time a cup game went to a penalty shoot out if I remember correctly, or do they class that as a draw. Or was it the league cup.......

I've been asked to get a ticket by a Man Utd fan, and he's always got me in at old trafford with one of his groups season tickets so i'll do my best to get him a ticket and sit with him. I do the same at Elland Road with some Leeds supporting friends and return the favour at St Marys. I don't see what the problem is with away fans sitting with home fans.

We still owe united for that relegation, so would be nice to turn them over again. Plus remember Leeds beat them last year as a league one club.

And after that fergie promised never to play a weakened side in the FA cup.

If we're going to beat them we'll have to raise our game and hope the gods are on our side, but that's how it should be.

As long as they stay quiet if Manure score.

Some of our fans might take exceptioon otherwise.

Dune would you feel the same if it was the Skates we were playing?

Agree about showing some control. And plan to sit in the Northam/Kingsland corner so not in a provacative stand. As for feeling the same if it was the scum - don't be silly.

I went along to the 2008 chairty shield when they beat the Skates on pens, went with some Utd fans in their end. Found their fans sound as, good lads, some good songs and a lot of proper fans there. Not like a lot of the flakey, studenty and middle clas mongtards we get at a lot of away games, singing every song at 10000000 mph. Also their flags and banners are quality, best one was red, white and black horizontal stripes, a Man Utd badge in middle and the James lyric "If i hadn't see such riches i could live with being poor" written around it. Class. United have the best away support in the country IMO.

The Man Utd fans I go up to Old Trafford with are a good bunch and it's always a great **** up. Some of the banter on the train on the way up is funny as ****. That said I was a bit uncomfortable when most of them left the pub after the game looking for Southampton fans, but as a guest I was made to feel very welcome.

Believe me fella, i wish our away support was as good as theirs. You lot look and learn on the 29th. No wigs, face paints and jester hats, proper fans, making a lot of noise and singing decent, inventive songs.

Let's hope we don't hear any renditions of this. Leeds sing it all the time in the pub before games (even when they're not playing Man Utd).

I've been to Elland Road quite a few times as got family up there who are leeds, heard that a few times. I wouldn't worry though, it's got more than 4 words to it so our fans will struggle, plus any words will be clapped over and sung at 1,000,000 mph so they wont be able to make it out anyway.

I have never been to an away game and seen any of that. Maybe at a big home game when the going is good etc. Bet you a million quid you'd see the same at old trafford, kids and familys having fun. God forbid.

Kids maybe, but not grown men in their 30's and 40's, that is just embarassing. Seen it many time at saints, home and away.

I'm a saints fan through and through and would never support another club, but Turkish is right, uniteds away support is exceptional, loudest, most original songs that a lot of other clubs end up copying, all stand up at EVERY away game. I had a middle aged woman eating fairy cakes out of a tupperware box sitting next to me at dagenham for f&ck sake. Terrace culture has to a large extent died at saints, we have our good days but most of the time I cringe at our support and feel a sense of real disappointment that we have very few decent songs (that can be sung properly anyway)

United and Saints are built on very different foundations. We're a family club, always have been while I've been a fan and always will be I hope, and that is why the 'terrace culture' you talk about is arguably less apparent than at clubs like United.

I hav eit on fairly good authority that the club do not want a repeat of the situation whereby Man U fans are mixed in with the home supporters. It is againts thier policy. I expect every ticket sold to be to people on the database and not risk anyone having a +1 to sell on a profit.

It will be bad enough to stpmach having them crowd out the corporate areas, hence the price hike in that area.

He's right you know, they put us to shame last time and killed our atmosphere. Everyone just got a bit of a cob on and the focus was on their fans rather than the team and the game. What we need is an early goal to liven us up and quieten them down. We need to raise our game against this lot, on the field and defo in the stands.

We all need radio mikes attached to the PA - oh hang on the PA is crap.........

completely agree with the people saying United's away support is probably the best in the country, loud as ****, good songs, always stood and hardly any wear colours (the whole men in black thing). I think most clubs would give their right arm for an away following as good as that and the only times i can think of we're even close is at Pompey, a few northern games and midweek London games.

Mind you at Old Trafford their support is joke, soulless stadium full of football tourists and people carry megastore bags in my experience.

Shame we don't have the terrace culture we used to, and that's new with St Marys, since the Dell had it back in the day. Even after the end of the terraces i remember evening games in the Archers being quality.

Only way i can see it coming back in all honesty is a return to terracing, we've made it all to nice and comfortable at SMS.

Can't quite strike it right can us Saints fans. The Northam are "Mongs" and the rest of the ground are yuppy "fairy cake eaters". So what does that make all of you lot brandishing the put downs about?

Uniteds away support is second to none. But yet again They will take virtually the whole of the Northam and we will be spread about. Then I will have a part timer who only comes to the big cup games sat behind me giving me jip when I try and get a proper "OWTS" going and telling me to sit down, then we will go 1 down then the whole ground will fall silent apart from 4,800 glory hunting c*nts bellowing noise. Leaving us, yet again, looking silly.

Maybe we can sing "Who the f*** are Man United" all game so the rest of the country watching on tv (if it's on), will think it's "Glory, Glory Man United" and they are making all the noise.

Bit like how our poor lads thought that the skates were bellowing "Play up P*mp*y, P*mp*y Play up" when infact they barely made a f*****g sound it was actually the f*****g idiots in the kingsland/Northam singing "Pay Up". Kinda hard to distinguish the difference when 5 or 6 thousand people are singing it. FFS.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely despise united and hate their fans, having had a few run ins with the arrogant c&nts, especially recall the relegation season a few of them down by the station provocatively singing "we've come back to send you down" having already beaten us in the cup that year. United have benefited from years and years of European away games influencing their away support culture and anyone who has been to football in Greece / turkey / Italy / Germany etc can vouch for the passionate loud coordinated support. Uniteds core support still comes from Manchester and many of their songs are inspired from the brilliant Manchester music scene, giggs will tear you apart again for example taken from joy division. Lets not embarrass ourselves singing Liverpool again, a few good slow loud renditions of owts should do, and their weak spot for wind up songs in usa and Malcolm glazer.

How can we be sure they were Fairy Cakes. They could well have been Muffins. They are cool and trendy and an integral part of Match Day culture

Old Trafford has its fair share of Fairy cake eaters but away from home they get it right. - agreed, although they get it right at home for big games, especially in Europe.

I had a Shepherds pie at D&R does that make me hard? - was it straight from the oven and boiling hot? If so and you managed to consume it despite burning your tongue then yes.

Our away support in terms of standing and noise is decent compared to some other clubs. We have a decent amount of lads that travel and the majority of our support stands wherever. I've never found standing a problem away from home. I admire Utd's away support though. I will be hopefully back in the Itchen North for this one and I hope it's not populated with a bunch of arseholes.

THis is why i dont understand why everyone was so against the idea of turning the Chapel into a "Kop". You'd never be moved, everyone in one place and over time more and more would join. I think it woul be brilliant having a whole end of 6-7k singing, you certainly wouldn't get the diliuted noise you get at SMS these days with parts of the ground singing different songs or the same one a bit behind the northam. Remember how impressive the northam looked when we had pretty much the whole end for JPT game against MK Dons? That was one of the best atmospheres i've seen at SMS, it could be like that a lot more.

I got a ST in the Northam but for that MK Dons game I had to get my ticket on the day, ended up in the Chapel, and I must say the Northam looked and sounded f*cking fantastic.

On another, slightly relevant note, in that game I was in the second to back row and everyone around me was stood up, yet all game we had stewards trying to make us sit down. Wish they'd just let us get on with it.

Let's hope if we get turned over by Man U that the defeat doesn't derail our bid to win this league. It's the worst draw we could have had at this stage of the season, a heavy defeat will do our morale no good at all as it will serve as a reality check for one or two of our budding young stars who may think secretly that they are already Premier League class... down to earth with a JOLT! is not what they or we need right now.

This is what worries me most.

I totally agree with this and can't understand some of the other comments on this thread about our away support. Only Wednesday can seriously rival us for travelling numbers in League 1 and only Norwich, Leeds, Forest, Derby and Ipswich in the NPC, possibly Sheff Utd. We also put many in the Prem to shame. Yes, Man U's travelling support is superb, the loudest and best in England, and drawn largely from the Greater Manchester area too but I've also watched Saints at OT and we've easily outsung 60000+ of them. I remember our first away game outside of the PL at Sheff Wed in 05/06, we had at least 2.5k there watching a team, manager and Chairman that couldn't give a fook and we were superb, loud and funny (esp the Hovis humming and a loud "time to go" senerade for Wed's fans leaving early) and I had Newcastle and Carlisle mates with me in our end who said exactly the same. I was at Luton in the Cup when we made up the "score a goal Neil Shipperley" chant when there was nothing else like it and we also started the "sit down Pinocchio" chant to Phil Thompson (okay, that was at home) which Man U, City and others copied. The "what a waste of petrol" chant to the Toon made them all laugh and made headlines as well.

Man U's away support is without rival but our away support I would rate in the top twenty for numbers and possibly higher for volume. A lot of home fans of other clubs consider us up for liking a good sing song generally.

Its easy to disparage the woman with the fairy cakes and the apocryphal old gits with blankets, but they are our core support - the ones who have supported Saints for 30 years or more and havent drifted away just because Saints have fallen down to league 1. The lads culture isnt there as much because Saints havent been successful. Once we start to climb the leagues, get more glamour matches and are on tv more the real plastics - the ones who think they are hardcore but really are more interested in dressing in the right brands and following a successful team, will start coming again.

It's the other way round. Lads will get priced out and it will be full of the types that don't stand and sing.

I think Utd will rest some key players (giggs, rooney, vidic, scholes). I know they played pretty much full strength team against liverppol but that was because it was a derby and they never want to lose them. Although their second team aint bad it would give us a sniff of a chance. If we play to our max and they play a weakened team you never know.

Rooney may well get a run out, at least off the bench, as his return from injury was said at the weekend as around 2 weeks, just in time for some match fitness testing at SMS.

Saturday 29th @ 5:15pm

Perfect! Means it'll have a cracking atmosphere and just after midday is so much better than 7am. Plus I'll have 2 games to watch before it to get warmed up. Any USA Saints wanna come round and see it? Let's have a party :-)

Van Dar Sar, Neville, O'Shea, Carrick, Vidic, Nani, Anderson, Berbatov, Giggs and Rooney all played when Saints last met Man Utd in 2009 as a soon to be relegated to League One team.

I doubt Ferguson will take this game that lightly as he will know Saints now have a far stronger team and infront of a live worldwide audience and a packed St Mary's, it is a potential banana skin. I think he may only rest 2 or 3 players at most even though they have a game 3 days later at home to Aston Villa.
