Legod Third Coming Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 It is obvious that nearly all clubs are now treating this competition with disdain. Premier League reserve sides are probably the equivalent of a half decent Championship side. We are at least as good as a half decent championship side (see Norwich and Leeds). This opens up an incredible opportunity for a club like ours to take this competition seriously and put out our strongest side to progress some distance. The down side is this potential 'distraction' - I don't buy that. Chelsea didn't appear distracted from winning the league when they won both the FA and League Cups. And then there is the risk of injury - but then a jar a mayonnaise could put you out for six weeks... The up sides for me are: More money into the club More exposure to encourage new fans More opportunity for our players to play better opposition We might actually go a long way in the Cup...
Saint_Mabes Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 I agree. I think now that we have got this far we should play our best team (bar players that need a rest). If we start slipping down the table I may start to feel differently though. Arsenal away i'm crossing my fingers for. Or even at home. Would love to see Walcott back!
PhilippineSaint Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 with the fact that we are already in round four I thought we were trying to win it ???????
georgeweahscousin Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 We should try and win every game we are in, on the flip side we shouldn't jeopardise a promotion push with cup distractions. I was impressed with Adkins decision to give some fringe players a run, and should stick to that policy.
saints-cris Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Calm down. We're not going to win it. Consider that we rested people yesterday, doesnt make me think that were going all out.
Thedelldays Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 no...and the fact we made 8 changes means the club are not really trying either
Under Weststand Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Winning breeds confidence I don't see why we shouldn't try to win every game we play in F.A cup or not. We have had a great January so far, lets keep the winning streak going, but we should rotate the squad for the cup games.
skintsaint Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 you'll be amazed how clubs take it seriously once they get to the quarters... never in a month of sundays will we be able to win the FA cup this season and dont think we should bust a gut to try.
Ewell Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 one game at time perhaps? Indeed, and added to that the bookies are rarely wrong! http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/fa-cup/winner
cellone Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Why enter it if we're not intent on winning it.
Thedelldays Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Why enter it if we're not intent on winning it. dont really have a choice
aintforever Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 If there is no Tuesday game straight after it is worth fielding our strongest XI in round 4.
cellone Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 dont really have a choice I didn't know that. Live n' learn.
dune Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 We should try to win every game we play. It's not the taking part - it's the winning that matters.
SamyCM Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 If we have a run that would be great, good for the money coming in. However lets not get ahead of ourselves I would rather win the league and go out next round if I was offered it. This year is about getting promotion and a cup run is a bonus.
Ewell Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 If there is no Tuesday game straight after it is worth fielding our strongest XI in round 4. We play Exeter away on the Tuesday after the 4th round.
The Angel Gabriel Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Calm down. We're not going to win it. Consider that we rested people yesterday, doesnt make me think that were going all out. This. This squad will have been redeveloped several times over before we'll be FA Cup contenders. Nice that's the intention though.
docker-p Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 We should try to win every game with the strongest side. But if or when, we get knocked out we should look at the bright side of being able to concentrate on the league. Potential injuries aside, I can't see a down side to a good cup run. When was the last time a third flight team got to an FA Cup final?
dune Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 When was the last time a third flight team got to an FA Cup final? Millwall.
trousers Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 I don't think we should 'try to win' the cup in the sense of making it the focus of our attention but if it happens as a natural by product of consolidating our position in the top 2 then, hey, why not win the damn thing...as long as it doesn't become a priority then there is every chance the positives will outweigh the negatives. (but let's not polarise the argument by saying there are ONLY positives or ONLY negatives of a prolonged cup run. It could work either for us or against us)
Colinjb Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Millwall. No, they were in the Championship at the time. They were on the fringes of the championship playoffs under Dennis Wise's management.
Legod Third Coming Posted 9 January, 2011 Author Posted 9 January, 2011 you'll be amazed how clubs take it seriously once they get to the quarters... never in a month of sundays will we be able to win the FA cup this season and dont think we should bust a gut to try. That's true but given a fair draw we could end up not playing a decent side until the last 16 when the remaining Premiership clubs get serious. I think this is what my hope is - winning it is highly unlikely.
Daren W Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Indeed, and added to that the bookies are rarely wrong! http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/fa-cup/winner At 200-1 I'd pop a fiver on us just for sh1ts and giggles...
Saint Garrett Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 How are Brighton's odds better than ours ?
SuperMikey Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 How are Stevenage's better than Huddersfield's?!
hamster Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 we should try to win everything, from the toss of the coin to the last kick of the ball. any other mentality is that of losers, quitters never win, winners never quit fail to plan and you plan to fail
