Saints 2 - 0 Blackpool - Post match reaction

Great win to top a great day. Adam signing long term, knocking out a PL side and Punch back and looking sharp. Stunner from Guly as well, top drawer!!

Also - and apologies if posted elsewhere - Howe's comments after the Bournemouth win; he has 'a big decision to make' now. Palace or Charlton i guess. Hard to see them maintaining their challenge if he leaves.

Got to say, I didn't understand the worry, people saying it's the reserves of a top flight team and we should be concerned. Rubbish. They've done very well but they don't have quality in abundance, far from ut. Their starting 11 was nowhere near the quality of ours despite us resting a few, and it showed. Good win, could have been 4 or 5.

We create a huge number of chances each game and that's great.

If this window involves signing lallana, chap low and guly while getting an in form puncheon back then we are in a fantastic position...despite what alpine says!

Got to agree with that!

Worth pointing out Graham Murty's comments on Radio 5Live Xtra... he was very keen to point that we got our tactics spot on, that we stifled Blackpool by putting pressure on their back four with Lallana in the hole behind Lambert and Barnard to give them no time to play their passing game. Credit to NA for that, because in general terms we've never been the best at adapting our tactics from our regular formation but it seems today everything came together.

That was then, but we have a new manager since.

Great team performance. They all worked hard and stifled most of Blackpool's possession before they got in to any dangerous areas. Passing was good, especially from Schneiderlin who ran the game. Lallana was superb again and Martin was solid. Bart pulled off one cracking save and dealt with everything else comfortably apart from one moment of panic in the box.

So chuffed that we won today on my son's first visit to St Mary's. He loved it.

Brilliant result, totally out played them. Yet another game where we could easily have had 5 or 6. AOC hitting the bar in injury time, Dickson had a shot very well saved, so did Barnard. Lallana's finish also let him down a couple of times with a couple of weak efforts, but was otherwise pretty good. Nice to see Puncheon back and playing well too.

Bart - 7 A couple of dodgy second half kicks, but couldn't fault him otherwise. Made an excellent save to tip one over the crossbar.

FR - 7 Solid at the back and supported the player in front of him, which seemed to change every 10 minutes.

Martin - 7 Looked very good for a player who hasn't played in a few months.

Seaborne - 8 Very strong performance

Harding - 8 Was good defensively and got forward pretty well

Puncheon - 8 For the first half hour he seemed to think he was still at Millwall and kept passing to blue shirts. Was excellent when he got into the game.

Schneiderlin - 7 Solid midfield display

Hammond - 7 As above

Lallana - 7 Always a creative threat. Unlucky not to score a couple of times.

Lambert - A constant menace and really should have scored in the build up to Barney's goal. Had a point blank effort well saved late on.

Barnard - 8 Industrious and a well taken goal

Subs:

Dickson - 7 Unlucky not to score at least once

AOC - 7 Great run and hit the bar at the end. Could have squared to Puncheon for a tap in, but you can't blame him.

Guly - 8 What a finish. Sign him up!

Great result! You can only beat what that put in front of you and we did just that, comprehensively.

For those worrying about extra games and fixture congestion, it is these kinds of results that really energise the fans and team alike. Confidence is so important and the team will feed off this in the next match(es)...

That was one of the best performances from a Saints side for 4 seasons. If Guly's goal had been scored in the Prem the commentators would have been creaming themselves for hours. Morgans performance today was huge. Hammond did OK, but I think he struggled with the pace of the game more than anyone. Bart had a couple of dodgy kicks in him, however his command of his box was good and he pulled off a world-class save in the 2nd half. It matters not whether Pools team was not their first 11 - they are pro footballers with big asperations, yet we made their team look poor...an independant bystander would guess we were the Prem side.

Onwards and upwards - let's have Man Ure at SMS next.

Enough of the meh it was only their reserve reactions.

The Blackpool Commentary team pointed out we had a completely new back 5 playing together from last week as well as 3 other changes from our last game.

They also said that we dominated Blackpool, that we deserved a third goal and that even WITH all our changes we played like a cohesive unit, which they failed miserably to do.

They also pointed out that NA got his tactics spot on, with our two forwards pulling wide and AL causing them problems on the edge of the box.

We wanted it more, we planned better and we won. That was a damned fine effort and shows that behind the scenes we are working as a unit.

Today was a great result but more important it showed that we CAN rotate players in and out and we still have a TEAM on the pitch.

Sure, we won't do the same to a PL first team but right now this is one helluva of a good day and that buzz will help with a cold Tuesday night up at Oldham.

Enjoy this evening, we've deserved it after the last few years

At the end of the day its about winning a game of football. We've got a good group of players and today they did just that with a good spirit which is important and yes we made a few changes with games coming up but its all about the squad and keeping a good squad together and in the dressing room and going out there with a good spirit and winning a game of football and they did that today and I'm proud of the way they played despite we changed our shape and we also won the game of football with this shape...

Morgan, Morgan signir un contrat de cinq ans s'il vous plait!

That was a great match. Forget the media hype from Ian Holloway ref fielding a weakened team, we played a completely different team today from the last 3 games and we were still a tight unit.

We're 2 leagues below Blackpool and we dominated from the off. With a performance like that we shouldn't have any worries about the league this season.

Very surprised to see us play 4-3-1-2, which left both fullbacks a little exposed, but it worked as it didn't allow Blackpool to play out from the back and for Lallana a free role which he clearly loves. Matt Philips was their oustanding player and he was just starting to cause us massive problems (down both wings) when Olle move him to right back???? Absolute madness. We immediately took charge again and their chance was gone. Blackpool had just two chances, a header and Bretties half chance. In the end it could have been a rout as we created some great opportunities. They were so open its not true.

We thoroughly deserved to win. We dominated the middle, looked strong at the back and had the quality passing and touch up front to open them up time after time. Puncheon, Lallana, Morgan, Lambert, Dickson and Guly just linked up so well with each other. So much quality on the ball - too much or them. We only really gave it away when attempting to thread balls through the eye of a needle, but if we did lose it we showed the desire and workrate to win it back. Tremendous display. Roll on 4th round draw. West Ham at our place perhaps for another `giant killing'?

Bart - 6 One top save, but got it totally wrong on a couple of crosses, very lucky to get away with both. A few poor kicks, a few decent long balls as well.

Richardson - 7 Very tough oponent in Philips and having got an early yellow for a cynical tackle did very well to keep things tight despite having no cover at all

Martin - 7 Strong and solid, never put under any real pressure mind. Won his share of headers and kept Euell quiet. Hard to fault him. Personally I felt very comfortable with him and Seabourn. I'm nit sure I would have said that in the summer.

Seaborne - 8 Very strong performance, extremely composed on the ball keeping, posession almost all the time (rather than hacking it away) and some good passing on the deck. Looked very classy.

Harding - 6 Looked a little slow over the first few yards, but recovered well on a couple of occasions to make up from this. Did make a few poor decisions, got caught ball watching, and done for pace against Philips the once (but who wouldn't?) when left exposed (as with Fraser he had no cover in front of him). Usual decent workrate and overlapping.

Puncheon - 8 His first touch was even better than I remember it. A few misplaced passes, but not enough for fans to jump on his back. Kept posesion extremely well (in a very cngested midfield) and some of the first time passes with the outside of the boot were perfectly weighted. Poor tackling (basically he's a bit of a bottler) makes me wonder if being part of a central three is quite right for him, but it worked today. On that display we shpuld not be loaning him out we shoukd be rotating him with Chamberlain.

Schneiderlin - 8 Looked excellent both on the right of the three and then in the middle. I thought he took charge especially when Hammond went off. I think he likes to be `the main man' and this brought the best out of him. Quick to jump on any loose control by the opposition, mopped up well and passed beautifully. Basically played the holding role as it should be played.

Hammond - 7 Controlled the middle until injury. Hopefully not too bad.

Lallana - 7 The free role is perfect for a player like him. Not only is his silky but he works his nuts off. Lots of **** corners.

Lambert -7 Carried the form from Monday into today. Brilliant first half where he won headers (that went to Saints shirts) and bossed things. Faded a little in the second, but a decent game all the same that perhaps deserved a goal

Barnard - 7 Worked hard (all three forwards did) and never let them buid from the back or settle, tired near the end. Great composure for his goal. Making it tough for Adkins when it comes to team selection. Perfect!

Dickson - 8 Absolutely oustanding when he came on. I thought we might be in troubke especially as he was asked to play on the right of the three. But he kept the ball well, worked very hard and if he'd not be fouled after beating about his 4th man he might well have gone on to score the goal of the century. I wonder if he will ever score. Can't wait for the celebrations when he does.

AOC - Not on long, but looked so comfortable in the middle with his back to goal. Pace stretched them perfectly to kill the game.

Guly - Brimming with confidence and as soon as the ball rolled across him he looked likley to score, grea turn, but what a strike. If he continues to score goals its hard to keep him out of the team.

What this game showed was our strength in depth. Blackpool dropped players and they were awful, we dropped players and it was business as usual. The message is clear - if you want to play in Nigel Adkins team you've got to fight for your place.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for teams to prepare a game plan for us as they have no idea which of our eighteen will be on the pitch at kick-off and even less idea on how we will shape up and play. Not only that, if they do suss us we have the resources and talent to change it almost on demand. We can adapt our starting line-up and game plan to combat anything we anticipate will come at us. These last few games have really demonstrated what a wide range of options we really have and just what talent we have at our disposal at this level.

What a great result.

We were up for it from the start. Everyone worked for each other. We were narrow giving Blackpool plenty of width but we dealt with that threat.

Young centre back combination of Seaborne & Martin was a delight.

I have been a big critic of Schneiderlin - He was majestic today. Best game of the season

Likewise of Puncheon - Credit to him he worked hard in the centre of midfield, clearly his best position. If that is what we are going to get I have changed my mind. Keep him

Well done to the whole squad and the Manager. I came away from the ground buzzing

What was the formation then - didn't Puncheon and Lallana play on the wings?

A brilliant performance. Some of the passing especially in second half was an absolute joy to watch. A little surprised to see Puncheon in team but he actually played pretty well and credit to NA for getting the tactics spot on. Lambert should of scored but no question his link up play was very good. Thought Dickson looked good when he came on. I think he may be converted in out and out left midifelder/Winger as loves to run with ball and got good pace. Not Morgan biggest fan but have to admit he played well especially in second half. Guly goal was awesome. Matt Philips was Blackpool best player with his pace causing us a few problems but to be honest we played them off the park. COYR

Strange to see a few people mentioning Bart's wayward kicking on a couple of occasions when Kelvin's kicking is dodgy 80% of the time !!

same old ********. Barts kicking was as good/bad as Kelvins. Comparng their kicking to other keepers we have seen at SMS, both aren't too bad.

no. It was 4-3-1-2

Puncheon, Hammond and Morgan in the middle (left to right)

Lallana in the hole

really flexible - Puncheon spend much of the game centre, Lallana was advanced more than the in the hole role.

Don't think you could really pin that performance to one formation,

For those worried about fixture congestion and extra games.....wins today for

Brighton, Huddersfield, Sheff Weds, Orient, Notts County and of course the mighty Saints all mean in the next round for L1 teams.

And at this point, Charlton still have a chance of being added to that list.

Yes you could.

Three in the middle, with Lallana just behind the front two. At goal kicks the two strikers spread wide and Lallana pushed up to mark their two centre backs. When we had the ball Lallana foudn that space between their defence and midfield. In our midfield Puncheon was fractionally on the left, Morgan the right and Hamomond down the middle of a tight three. No one played out wide. When Hammond went of Morgan move to the central and more deep holding position, Dickson played slightly to the right. Yes they didn't stick to those sides and positions rigidly, but they were aleways the starting positions from any restart.

What a wonderful day we have had. Lallana signs long term contract and a revised Saints team selection get outstanding win over Premiership Club. (Good Job Ian Holloway made his excuses earlier in the week:)).

Also, a dysfunctional club down the M27 collected a handful of yellow and a red card as well as exit from this competition. What a bright New Year! :D

Thanks Chez & Nick.

It sounds like we played with a lot more flexibility than normal which usually just amounts to the occasional switch between Lallana and OC - very encouraging.

very encouraging. I wonder what made Adkins choose this formation and whether he will use it and agains who. They had no answer to it.

It may not have been 'pool's starting line up, but 9 of their opening 11 have started Prem matches this season, only Rachubka & Tomsett have not. Given we played an 'unfamiliar' back 5 this was an excellent result. I loved the bit on R5Live when Murty got the commentator to admit that Saints' players looked a class above League1.

Everbody was good and I was pleased for Puncheon. However I thought Schneiderlin gave one of the best midfield displays I have seen anywhere in a long time. I just wish he could shoot. Whu

He was ****ing amazing today tackling and passing were top draw. Why doesn't he play like that every week?

Bit hacked off with Stevenage going and stealing all the glory, never even got a name check on Sky News Sports Round Up.

Just got Blackpool lost....

No they didn't, they got walloped.

Still interesting to see how AP prepared his side for a televised game vs NA

(lights blue touch paper and runs)

What about Barnard's disallowed goal? Maybe it was discussed in the matchday thread but I can't find it. I thought if the keeper had it in just one hand it was fair game to knock it out of their hand to score... However, all in all, we made a Prem league team look 2nd class and I loved the possession football that we are playing now. Well done Adkins and well done the fans for backing the team.
