Chez Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 Has any club ever bought a young player and then immediately loaned that player back to their original club? This kind of thing is always in press speculation about lower league youngsters and Prem suitors but has it ever happened? I can't think of any. Off the top of my head WBA bought Dawson in the summer and loaned him back to Rochdale this season. Chris Smalling was bought last January and then loan back to Fulham for the remainder of the season.
Chez Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 FFS Sky. Why don't they quote Cortese and Adkins instead? i.e. "Chamberlain is not leaving (in January)" [Cortese, Dec 2010] and "No one is leaving the building (this month)" [Adkins, Jan 2011] the latter quote would be a false should Puncheon leave. I guess he must be staying too.
trousers Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 the latter quote would be a false should Puncheon leave. I guess he must be staying too. I suppose he could cover that one by saying he was already out of the building but was just popping back in for a few games, before getting back on someone else's bus....
sotonjoe Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 FFS Sky. Why don't they quote Cortese and Adkins instead? i.e. "Chamberlain is not leaving (in January)" [Cortese, Dec 2010] and "No one is leaving the building (this month)" [Adkins, Jan 2011] Because those may turn out to be things they said in hope before the bids started coming in and Chamberlain decided he wanted out?
Chez Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I'd like future interviews to include the phrase, "should anyone be looking to take AOC out of the building befoe his contract ends then the figures bandied about in the papers will need to be doubled before we'd even start to consider looking at them for more than five seconds." Start you price high and work down to where you are comfortable with it. He won't be going anywhere in this window IMO.
Wade Garrett Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I have changed my mind on this one. Yes £10million is astronomical, but now we have a bit of cash why don't we try to keep our young starlets and build the team around them. Imagine where we could be now if we were able to have kept Bale and Walcott.
TopGun Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I agree with Wade Garrett here. Might as well make the top teams pay top dollar if we are going to sell him, which we don't have to!
MarkSFC Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I have changed my mind on this one. Yes £10million is astronomical, but now we have a bit of cash why don't we try to keep our young starlets and build the team around them. Imagine where we could be now if we were able to have kept Bale and Walcott. I think you are being swayed by the media hype surrounding him rather than focussing on the coments of NC and NA!! The media love to pander to the so called "big clubs" or at least clubs in the biggest cities because after all they rely on ratings to sell advertising so need as big an audience as possible. Everything coming out from NA and NC around the club and players is positive and forward-looking. Imagine how much Sky and BBC and Murdoch would hate it if (and I realise its very very unlikely) Saints were to actually win the Premier League or at least be established top 4 for many seasons?!! They would hate it because the worldwide fan base of Saints fans is no where near that of Liverpool, Manure, Arsenal and Chelski! Maybe, just maybe NC (and MLs money) is the man to change things over the next 5-10 years and with any luck AOC will be the best player in the league playing for Saints!!!
braveheart1983 Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 AOC will be worth 10million in a few years time if not more anyways. But I wouldnt want to see him go even if we did get offered more....NOW is the time to build for the future, lets keep him if at all possible.....and see him potentially become a saints legend as we rise up the leagues with a youthful midfield.
Rory Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 There is an interesting, but albeit cryptic, post on the Daily Echo site: As we are all giving our views this is what I have been told. . When Alex signed his 3 year contract in August certain "releases clauses" were put in i.e. IF a PL club comes in for him and offers £10M package with at least £5m up front he could SPEAK to them. Therefore Nigel and the Club cannot say "he will not leave in January" because these releases clauses put it is out of their hands. . As it stands at the moment the Club WANT HIM to STAY, HE WANTS TO STAY through THIS Transfer Window but that somebody behind the scenes is causing trouble. . I am not convinced this is other clubs trying to "unsettle the player" although they would love to get the player on the cheap (alot less than the release clauses). What I am led to believe is that the group behind the scenes who have been trying to get the Liebherr's family out of the club are the group who are "driving this story". . Until recently they had somebody in the club who knew about the "releases clauses" in Alex's contract and have been leaking various bits to the London media in an attempt to make this deal happen. . At the end of the day this group cannot afford to buy a CC club only a L1 club and therefore are hoping that if Saints fail to go up this season that the Liebherr family will sell up and they can take over. . I will repeat what I have told; the Club/Nigel want Alex to stay, the player wants to be here on the 1st Feb but the "dark forces behind the scenes" are causing mischief again in an attempt to use this as a "stick to beat Nicola with".

Does anyone know who this 'group' is? Is it a 'brand new' set of people with an interest in taking over OR 'ghosts' from the relatively recent past....? I can't see how a group that are trying to derail the club now would find a welcoming fanbase if they were ever to mount a takeover....

shirleysfc Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 SSN transfer round up - A source close to AOX claims he may have played his last game for Southampton.
SuperSAINT Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 I bet it's the "Magnificent Seven" from a few years back.
Papa Shango Posted 17 January, 2011 Posted 17 January, 2011 Pacifistic twaddle lacking any sensitivity to the issues involved or the reaction of all connected to the club! If AOC is allowed to leave before the end of his contract it will be a disaster for the fans and a disaster for the club. It will signify beyong doubt to the manager, the players and the fans that we are still a selling club and ergo not interested in becoming anything other than a self-sufficient business where football is of secondary importance. If AOC leaves thee will be an immediate exodus, contracts or no contarcats and the first out wil be Nigel Adkins followed veru quickly By Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin and every other youngster who thinks this club has a real furure and their futures are best guarantedd by staying with this upwardly mobile unit called SFC. Knock out one brick from this still fragile structure and down will come the whole house of bricks make no mistake on that judgement. I may be only one fan but one of long-standing and sitting fan who has bought his ST year-upon-year come what may but if we even hint at being unambitious and a selling club again I will be off for good. Nicola Cortese will know this. Sorry, but that is such a ridiculous thing to say. You're suppose to support the club, not just one player. It's got nothing to do with being a selling club or not, if a player wants to leave then he's going to go. No point keeping someone against their will. I'd say pretty much every club anywhere in the world has had to sell a player they didn't want to at some point. United let Ronaldo go to Real Madrid when he wanted to go. Arsenal did the same with Ashley Cole, Liverpool with Mascherano. Even Barcelona with Figo. Are all those 'selling clubs' too? FWIW I believe he won't go this transfer window, but if he does it will be because he wants to go, and not because we want to become 'a self-sufficient business'.

Matthew Le God Posted 18 January, 2011 Posted 18 January, 2011 (edited) The press really doesn't have a clue what is going on and are making up a new front runner each day. That Daily Mail article above is littered with inaccuracies. All the national and local press have completely ignored Saints extremely strong financial position, Chamberlain recently signing a 3 year deal, his father stating they are happy at Saints and Nicola Cortese clearly stating Chamberlain won't be sold in January. If all the biggest clubs in England really do want him the price won't be £5m or even £10m, he would be worth a lot more considering they could get 15 years service out of him. To sell him for £5m or £10m now when he still has 2 and a half years left on his contract would make little sense. He may well end up a Premiership player before the age of 20 by staying with Saints. If Cortese and the Liebherr's really do mean to fund Saints as a team to challenge for European places then Chamberlain's ambitions may be achieved staying at Saints until at least his early 20's. Edited 18 January, 2011 by Matthew Le God
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 18 January, 2011 Posted 18 January, 2011 Lovely - the price goes up if Man City are involved - whether speculation or not!

With just 13 days of the January transfer window remaining, Oxlade-Chamberlain is eager to sit down with Saints chairman Nicola Cortese and Adkins to clarify his future. The last set of discussions between Southampton and the player took place in November and there is a feeling among the Oxlade-Chamberlain camp that they are being kept in the dark over developments." FFS. This is getting silly now.
Matthew Le God Posted 18 January, 2011 Posted 18 January, 2011 Should Chamberlain still be a Saints player after the window closes, what are your predictions for how the press will explain how they were wrong and a League One club was able to hold off the advances of Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs? Or will they say these big teams don't really rate him any more and decided all not to bid. I think they will claim one of those teams has tied up a deal for the summer and the speculation will die down and then will all start up again in a few months. I look forward to Saints showing what crap they have been coming out with when Chamberlain stays.

trousers Posted 18 January, 2011 Posted 18 January, 2011 Here's a tangental thought...perhaps it's shrewd businessman Cortese himself that is the source of these 'stories'...? Wacky as it may seem, it makes sense on several levels... Cortese inflates his value for when he eventually moves (if indeed he does) and also claims a moral victory when he pulls off the 'coup of the season' by fending off those nasty big premier league sides. Think back to the feel good factor that was generated on here and in the team itself when we re-signed Lallana... Mind games or too far fetched...?

His father talks about the staggering amounts being bandied about, without denying anything. Wenger denies being involved with an approach for the player. Adkins comes out with a convoluted message that we will do the best for the player and that includes the club he would sell him on to! To me this signals that the Chamberlains have decided to cash in, but want the lad to go to a club where he is not stuck in the reserves and a chance to progress. Looking at things logically, Arsenal appear the perfect club for him to join. The problem is, I don't believe Arsenal want the lad, well not at this price. They have extra ordinary young talent at the present and it's difficult to see if they can guarantee anything or if he represents a vital need. It seems the clubs offering the money are not the first choice and Saints would be reluctant to sell on the cheap. Wenger does not do politics so I would be pretty sure his comments at the time were true. And Adkins is definitely no politician, virtually spelling things out in the attempt at an explanation.

Ahr but thats a problem - I understand the sentiment as its a natural reaction, but at the same time we need to consider what impact that has on the reputation of the clubs and particularly the Academy - the best way to expand teh catchment area and get romising kids to join us is to show that its not a mercenary environment - loyalty is gone in football - so the key is eally to try and hold on as long as we can be demonstraing the opportunity for the youngsters to develop and have success with the club and as with Walcott we will see parents and players who have been well brought up looking to support the club by helping us get the best deal. I dont like the situation any more than any other fan, but realism means we need to think carefully about any mercenary cashing in on 17 year old kids.

And I dont think he does, I think he realises his boy is better here where he will play most, if not every, week. At 17 the best thing for him to do is play against decent opposition in a competitive league. No reserve league is going to have the same intensity and I am sure Chamberlain Snr knows it. That young Japansese college kid that they signed a while back has been refused a work permit so he'll just stay at Feyenoord until he qualifies for one.Very little logic in Arsenal's youth recruitment policy. They're so tight fisted compared with their big rivals that they are always prepared to go out on a limb for young player who might just make it big.
