I think you will actually find in this thread I have said that Cortese only said those things in December because he knew the player wouldn't leave even when the inevitable bids came in. He would have been foolish to make such a claim without knowing the players intentions and it "looks" like Cortese and I will be showed to be correct.

Yeah that’s why his dad who we know is also his agent was all over Sky Sports News saying that his sons preferred destination was Arsenal. If Alex is still here at 11pm tonight then in my opinion and many others it is because the purchasing clubs have been frightened off by the huge fee we want for him. Make no mistake if a fee was agreed then Alex would no longer be a Saints player. Expect a more determined raid and more likely a different outcome next summer!

Tactically Saturday was his best game for us, he showed alot of maturity and composure as a 17 year old to do the disciplined job he did. He may not have done any wonder stuff but it was more of a team performance from the lad.

That maybe true but he did not look and has never looked to me a £10m player perhaps one day he will

TBF Andy Caroll has never looked like a £35m player to me either...

Well he looks it to me, more importantly he does to senior figures at Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd. Probably numerous other clubs aswell.

£35m means he's more valuable than David Villa (i think), now that is a truly crazy price tag if you compare the quality of both players. Likewise pricing AOC at £10m is more than a little mental as it puts him in the same bracket as someone like Rafael Van der Vaart (depending on which story read anyway!).

Now as much as i like AOC and think he's decent who the hell would value him the same as Rafael Van der Vaart!?

Alex Chamberlain is 10 years younger and any club would get 10 years service more out of Alex then they would with Van Der Vaart! Plus Chamberlain would have a higher potential sell on fee for the same reason. Van Der Vaart's value will only go down from now on, Chamberlain's will rise.

Van der Vaart was also surplus to requirements at his previous club, Chamberlain is an important player for Saints.

Fair enough but you are making a massive guess that he'll make that step up and not get injured. Van De Vaart on the other hand is proven at the highest level and can walk in to most top teams.

Just to reiterate a point i do think AOC has the potential to be a very, very good player but so far he's only proved it in League One and a handful of cup games. It says more about the insanity of the football transfer market to me than anything else.

I am not sure that is the case he obvious has potential but I would suggest that £10m is slightly over the top.

With regard to Carroll strikers are always worth a lot and he has played for England but £35 m does seem a lot

You don't get some of the biggest clubs in the world chasing you if you aren't very good. Maybe one club might make a mistake in scouting but not when lots of big clubs are tracking you. £10m is cheap for a player rated as an important part of the national teams future by people high up in the English FA and Wenger, Ferguson and Comoli. Especially when you look at £35m+ for 22 year old Andy Carroll who has 5 years fewer playing time left than Chamberlain.

We have signed Guly,Lallana on improved/longterm deals.

We have signed Chaplow,and N'Guesson(sp)

This is no more than we already had,we are not 'pushing on' and these players are the same players that have taken us to 4th in the league,4th is not good enough considering the resources available to Adkins.Oh and yes we have games in hand, but we need to win those.Lot's of away days to come.

The stance that we do not need to stengthen is not the right one, imo.

Unfortunately i feel we will be 'impotent'in this transfer window, just when we needed to position ourselves ready for a promotion push, and more importantly, ready for the championship.

just on Caroll, its true to say that good english players always carry a big premium. Although it is still a bonkers price.

Off camera at that same interview Mark Chamberlain also said that he would be quite happy for his son to stay at Saints for the next two and a half years if nobody came in for him.

That kind of comment wouldn't interest Sky or Fleet Street though. They just like the League One superstar to a "big club" story. ;) :D

How do you know this anyway?

When did N'Guessan make his league debut for us? Must have missed it. Guly / Chaplow been here all season? Adkins been here all season?

Where strengthen?

LM - Lallana's not that good?!

CF - Barnard / Guly / Lambert are not rated in this league?

RM - Ox-C will never make it..

Your logic is muddled - on the one hand, you're suggesting that the fact we're backed by with the financial security of the estate of a billionaire was a relevant factor (it doesnt matter how rich you are if the player wants to leave); on the other, you quote NC who himself conceded that he didn't know AOC's inner thoughts -just that he doesn't THINK AOC wants to be anywhere else and he knows that AOC is aware that he has alot to learn - there's no resounding or positive statement along the lines that "AOC is keen to be here and believes the club gives him the best chance to develop/learn etc etc" (for a contrast, see AL who has made these kind of statements). I'm not saying that AOC was chomping at the bit to leave, especially as he can wait till the summer but the idea that NC could be certain in December that AOC would stay is just crazy. You're overestimating the club's degree of control over these matters.

I get the impression that AOC is far less sold to the idea that

The relevant word here is "IF" - a vacuous statment and hardly a ringing endorsement given nobody genuinely thinks that interest in AOC is going to die anytime soon...

Well Lallana thinks a quick return to the Premier League is possible, hence why he signed a long term 4 and half year deal. Chamberlain signed a 3 year deal in August 2010. Saints could be in the Premier League with Chamberlain still a teenager. Of course if Saints are still in League One next season then Chamberlain along with others like Fonte, Lambert, Lallana and Schneiderlin will leave. However I think it is possible Chamberlain will still play for Saints if they are a Championship side in 2011/12.

That's a fair statement, though, of course, AL and AOC signed contracts under very different circumstances (e.g. AOC hadn't even made his full professional debut in August)

But the club were fully aware of his abilities having been at the academy for the last 10 years and playing against other Premier League academies.

Im sure they're the first ones to be surprised by how quickly he's made an impact - cue your favourite NC quote. Professional and academy-level football are different on so many levels that they're like night and day.

Well he has also been in and around the 1st team and training with them since early 2010, possibly earlier.

There would have been rumours by now if he was leaving - there are reporters at all the likley clubs, I think we can safely say he's not going anywhere at least until the summer.

Posted
That sounds like a "covering all our bases" article - if he goes in the summer they can say "oh look, we were right" and if he doesn't then it is just forgotten.

This - the media frenzy has been what many of us suspected - based on bollux.

Time to close this Fleet Street driven thread which didn't happen as they didn't listen to Nicola Cortese's interview in December 2010 with the BBC.

Will probably reopen in Summer 2011, but if Saints are a Championship side in 4 months time I think we may have a chance of keeping Alex for longer.

Well done Cortese.

Although there are some idiots on other sites that are disappointed we didn't sell him to fund a promotion push, and that we're now destined for L1 football for years.

12 and a half minutes and then I can lock this ridiculous thing.

Not strictly true, many deals could be concluded after the window officially closes - therefore players can still move, so lets not tempt fate eh.

Personally though - I think staying is the right choice for the lad. He comfortable, he's playing, he's learning, he's getting better and the clincher for him is he has massive amounts of time on his side. No need to rush now - the vultures will circle once again at the end of the season and he can re-assess his options.

True, but the transfer window is officially over, and so I feel justified in ticking the little box.
