CityRanger Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 So he's getting stick already on FB (allegedly, "play or payed lol!",allegedly). And people REALLY still think he'll sign for Arsenal and hope he stays on loan at Saints? I really don't see that happening. Remember Ince in a Man U shirt whilst still at West Ham? Fans won't have it imo. TDD says otherwise when I mentioned this yesterday. If his Dad has any sense he'll not allow him to stay, it could get nasty...
Kingsland Nick Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 Because it will leave a massive hole in the side thats why, why can nobody see that ?? We are already lacking quality widemen with Puncheon being a spoilt brat and Lallana injured let alone losing AOC with less than a week left. We'll just have to buy a more experienced, and physically stronger, player who actually wants to play for us.
Smirking_Saint Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 We'll just have to buy a more experienced, and physically stronger, player who actually wants to play for us. As if it is that easy.
Smirking_Saint Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 I've never had so much faith in a chairman to get the best deal for saints. After years of dealing with Lowe, the interested clubs are in for a big shock. NC will hate arsenal for talking about AOC so he's called up Fergie. Classic. I hate wenger, he makes my bloody boil. I will bloody love it if he goes anywhere but to Arsenal right now. FWIW i still think he has the best oppotunity giving Liverpool a crack, they have no wingers whatsoever, if anything he will have a better bet breaking into that team then any other. However if i was in his shoes i would be looking at Ferguson TBH.

However if i was in his shoes i would be looking at Ferguson TBH. I agree. They are bigger. If all these clubs are desperate to sign him now surely they'll still be there at the end of the season with the same sort of money (as he's just signed a 3 yr deal)? If so Cortese should tell them all to do one (politely!), and we'll do business then. This will keep all the loan back lovers happy as he's still here. He's 17 and value shouldn't drop (bar broken leg/bad injury). We don't need the money either, apparently. But is it possible? Would he still perform if he (and Daddy) are given the hard ball treatment by Cortese? The outcome of this will be most interesting...
Matthew Le God Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 What are you on about? That was Lowe's greatest strength! Look at how much Walcott and Bale are worth now. Lowe didn't do that great a job really when selling them. Of course they would go for millions no matter who was Saints chairman, they are good players. He could have got more if he ran the rest of the business well and didn't weaken his bargaining position.

They only went for less because we financially fell apart TBF The original fees were about realistic.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 Wenger tonight after the game on AOC: "There is no news, and I would be surprised if there will be any," the Arsenal manager said.

As i said in an earlier thread, he would have to keep his form up in order to keep the big clubs interested. A much better option then the loan back one IMO.

Didn't like the man, didn't rate the man and didn't want him here, but every player sold went for top dollar and that was down to lowe.

Didn't like the man, didn't rate the man and didn't want him here, but every player sold went for top dollar and that was down to lowe. Dean Richards - 8 million Theo Walcott - 9.1 million Two unbelievable deals. If NC can beat them... Then well, total credit to him.
Matthew Le God Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 Wenger tonight after the game on AOC: Taken from here... http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/36710/wenger-reaction Without knowing the question we don't know if it was in response to AOC. It seems like it is a general response to any activity by Arsenal in the window. But I'm sure he has said similar in the past and still made signings.
shurlock Posted 25 January, 2011 Posted 25 January, 2011 Look at how much Walcott and Bale are worth now. Why is this relevant - its a catch-22: they are only worth these amounts because they've played at the highest level e.g. Champions League, but they are unlikely to do that with us. As such we could never the demand the prices that are touted for these players.
Matthew Le God Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Spot the bad journalism competition.... A source said: “Southampton do not have to sell players for the sake of it and would not be interested in a down-payment deal.” Saints would demand at least £8m as initial payment for Chamberlain. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/173519/Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-for-sale-but-it-ll-cost-you/
Jimmy_D Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 So the only quotes we have are Wenger saying it probably won't happen. The Man U talk smacks of a media wanting to use the cup match as a talking point. There's been no quotes from Man U to suggest they're considering an approach.
Hedgehog Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 In the end, regardless of all the discussion on here, we will make no difference to the outcome of when he goes, not if. Big fish will always eat smaller fish, and as much as we love Saints, i doubt if his dreams when young (younger than he is now) was to play for us, his dreams would have been to play for the Man U's, Arses, Lpools, and this is what he has the chance of doing now. May be the right move, maybe not, but i doubt he or is family give a stuff about SFC!

Most kids only start really taking up football, supporting teams properly at around that age. I'm not saying playing for Saints is his ultimate ambition and of course he'll want to play at the highest possible level and earn the most he can, but having been at the club for 10 years and over half your life will mean something you would hope.

CityRanger Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 His dream would have been to play for Chelski. Don't read to much into the whole Facebook comments peeps. You mean the "played or paid lol" comment I take it? He wants to tread very carefully. If I was his age and in his position I'd be excited but he needs to reel his neck in a bit if he did say that. Football is very emotive for the fans!

If I was his age and in his position I'd be excited but he needs to reel his neck in a bit if he did say that. Football is very emotive for the fans! Basically, the chat we had on FB went along the lines of; Me: There's some fans Koppin' rotten over you. AOC: Because of the comment? Me: Pretty much. But I don't know what the comment was and can't see anything that would make peeps throw one...? AOC: basically mate, Jordace (holder-spooner) tried having a laugh and wrote something on my page about moving. I was on the playstation and a few of my mates are on the computer. Some lad wrote on there "You won't play." and one of my mates wrote "play or paid?". I deleted it as soon as I saw it. Me: I see why fans are spitting dummies out. I have spoke to him loads of times before on there and he is always really careful what he says. This would be the first thing he would have said and I believe him with his account of things. He ain't a silly lad.
saintsub Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 the lad is 17, im pretty sure the 'paid or played' thing was a joke, put yourself in his situation for a minute, things have happened so quickly for the lad, would you not be excited by interest from arsenal or man utd or whoever? he hasn't come out and said anything in terms of im staying or im going, and the bashing he is receiving on here is unbelievable.
Northant Saint Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Would be very disappointed if he left this month, and I for one would think less of him, especially in the light of his 'play or pay' comment.
saintsub Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Would be very disappointed if he left this month, and I for one would think less of him, especially in the light of his 'play or pay' comment. its been established that it wasn't him, but some mates on a computer by the poster above ^ and disappointed? disappointed in a lad moving to a top 4 club in england, with coaches and a manager who are the best in the world at developing young talent, rather than staying in league 1 where he gets kicked to shreds week in week out and is at risk of a serious injury?

He ain't a silly lad. Sounds plausible and reasonable enough to be honest. Though I was initially filled with dread when all of this speculation started, we've survived selling players in the past and hopefully are in the position to this time too. If the lad wants the move and a club's prepared to pay, it's almost certainly better for all parties involved to go for it (assuming that we can squeeze Premiership club X for every penny they're worth). That said I think it's crucial that a few bob of it goes straight onto a substantial bid for solid League One player who would walk straight into the first team. Strength in depth please!
sotonist Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 we've survived selling players in the past We survived selling Deano and we survived selling Theo, but we got relegated rock bottom the season we sold JB and we were plunged into two seasons for relegation battles, the second of which we finished rock bottom, after we sold Bale.

Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that Chamberlain will still be under contract with Saints when the window shuts. No doubt announced first thing that he's off now...
Saint Garrett Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 To be fair, I'm not saying either way, but it's very easy for him just to say...I wasn't at my computer, it was my mates fault.
Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 It's even easier for him to just ignore the chat box popping up and go on with his day. But I see your point.
saintsub Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 from the look of his facebook though, he seems like an intelligent lad, and i doubt very much that he would say something as prudent as that, he will know the scrutiny he is under right now, and it is hard to imagine that this facebook talk is anything of real significance

If this is the case then I withdraw my comment. Yet I will still be disappointed- if the lad (or his father) had any sense he would stay until the summer, instead of rotting in the reserves. I don't think Walcott faired so well initially when he hastily made his move. Besides, we are the best in the world at developing young talent.

And i do hope you are joking when you say we are the best team in the world at developing young talent? Edited 26 January, 2011 by saintsub
SuperMikey Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 I would argue that the Facebook comments disappearing was on the advice of Chamberlain Snr. and that they were by Alex originally. Writing stuff like that can jeopardise a transfer, and if that falls through you look like a c*nt at your current club where the fans will always think of the 'paid or played' when you score. Just a conspiracy theory mind.

It was slightly tongue in cheek, but considering who we have turned out over the past few years, we are certainly up there with the very best. And yes, i'm sure he will get a lot out of the 'Arsenal experience', but nothing can beat regular, first team football...

He has had a rapid rise to stardom and I say fair play to the lad for how well he has handled it, and this almost certainly was not his doing. I just hope this isn't blown out of proportion.
Gingeletiss Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 Again, a lone voice, but why is it, that on here, AOC is being hammered for something that may or may not happen, but in the real world, my non-SW mates, wish him all the best, whatever happens. They also agree with me, that this is a media driven issue, as there is not much happening, and won't believe a thing, until something official is announced. If I were the lad, reading this thread, I'd be off like a shot now, as the general impression, is that he is not wanted, and we'd rather have the money.......spot the similarity in the alledged 'paid or played' comment.

Or is this like a "my mate really fancies you" moment at school? They're too shy to approach so let the media do the work...
labibs Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 I don't think there is a team outside of the premiership who could afford to turn down a £10m bid for one of their players (QPR aside). It's crazy money for a 17 year old with 20 odd games under his belt. I would much prefer to deal in the Summer, but if someone actually chucks us £10m up front I think you have to take it. That could fund us getting out of the championship next year (if spent wisely and assuming we go up this year)
aintforever Posted 26 January, 2011 Posted 26 January, 2011 I can see Cortese digging his heels in over this, he doesn't seem the sort of person who would get mugged by a "big club", take any notice of media pressure or bow to the wishes of a 17 year old employee.
